A bunch of police officers rushed in and blocked the doorway.
The leading officer, looking quite intimidating, walked right in.
“Uh…” As soon as he stepped inside, Director Wang was completely dumbfounded.
There he saw a young man, legs crossed, sitting back in his chair, whistling a tune with a relaxed and cocky look on his face.
Standing next to him were an older man and a younger one. The younger guy had that typical arrogant, reckless look of youth, acting incredibly smug. Only the older man seemed genuinely worried.
And on the other side, the scene was way more over the top—a whole group of men of different ages were all kneeling in front of the young man, each with a pained expression on their face.
What the hell? Were they holding some kind of worship ceremony or something?
Director Wang was totally confused.
“Director Wang, you’re finally here! Hurry up and arrest this bastard!” The young man from earlier perked up again as soon as he saw the police.
“Deputy Captain Liu, why are you kneeling on the ground?” It was only then that Director Wang noticed Liu Mang, the deputy captain of the Public Security Brigade, also kneeling there.
“Shut the hell up! You think I want to be kneeling here?” Liu Mang cursed under his breath.
“Director Wang, never mind me for now. This brat assaulted a public official without any reason. Just arrest him already!” Liu Mang pointed viciously at Lin Hai.
“Arrest your mom!” Lin Hai suddenly jumped over, swung his arm wide, and slapped Liu Mang hard across the face.
“Smack!” The crisp sound of the slap was especially loud, and the entire private room fell into dead silence.
Everyone was stunned.
Nobody expected that Lin Hai would dare to throw a punch right in front of a room full of police officers.
“Director Wang, you saw that, right? How arrogant and lawless this punk is! What are you waiting for? Arrest him already!” It took Liu Mang a long moment to react, and then he started yelling furiously.
“Smack!”
“So what if I’m arrogant?”
“Smack!”
“So what if I’m lawless?”
Lin Hai swung left and right, landing two more big slaps that completely dazed Liu Mang.
This time, even Director Wang, who was standing nearby, was taken aback.
Director Wang had spent many years working at the local police station. He’d met all sorts of people from every walk of life.
Normally, when ordinary people see the police, let alone hitting someone, just having cops surround them is enough to make them piss their pants in fear.
But the situation today seemed a bit… strange.
This young man in front of him, right under his nose, was fearlessly slapping the deputy captain of the Public Security Brigade. That could only mean one of two things.
Either this young man was a complete idiot, or he was genuinely a real badass.
He couldn’t make any rash moves. He needed to figure out the situation first. Director Wang had no intention of getting himself dragged into this mess.
“Director Wang, what the hell are you standing there for? Why aren’t you arresting him?” Gong Zhen was furious when he saw Lin Hai just slapping away while Director Wang did nothing.
“Whoa, who’s this pig-head?” Director Wang took one look at Gong Zhen’s fat, swollen face—puffed up huge from Lin Hai’s slaps—and didn’t recognize him at all.
But still, he was a police station director. He wasn’t just some random person anyone could boss around.
Seeing that the pig-headed guy had been beaten to such a pathetic state, he probably wasn’t anyone important. Director Wang immediately straightened up and got tough.
“Who do you think you are? The police know how to do their jobs, and we don’t need you telling us what to do. And watch your mouth when you talk to me, or I’ll slap you too!” Director Wang widened his eyes and said viciously.
Gong Zhen was furious. What the hell? He called this guy for backup, and now he’s getting all high and mighty with him? Whose side are you even on?
“Director Wang, he’s Deputy Dean Gong from the court!” Liu Mang quickly covered his face and said.
“Whoa, you’re Deputy Dean Gong?” Director Wang was startled. He took a closer look, and holy crap, it really was him!
This was getting tricky!
Director Wang’s heart sank. A court deputy dean had been beaten to a pulp like this. If he didn’t handle it well, he might end up getting caught in the fallout too.
But if someone dared to beat a court deputy dean into a pig-head, could they be easy to mess with?
So what the hell was he supposed to do?
Director Wang couldn’t help but glare hard at Liu Mang. What an idiot. If the situation was this messy, why the hell did he even call him? Wasn’t he just asking for trouble?
But Director Wang was an old pro. After thinking it over, he decided he’d first figure out who this young man really was—see if he was an idiot or a genuine badass—and then make his move.
“Our police always handle cases fairly and strictly. Whether you’re a high-ranking official or an ordinary citizen, we treat everyone the same,” Director Wang announced with a pompous speech first.
“Both sides, take out your ID cards,” he said, gesturing to the officers beside him.
“Hand over your IDs, now!”
“Hey, Director Wang, are you out of your damn mind?” Liu Mang couldn’t take it anymore and cursed at him.
Director Wang was already pissed at Liu Mang for dragging him into this mess, and now he was cursing at him too. That set him off.
“Deputy Captain Liu, you’re a cop too. You should know proper procedure. First, I collect IDs to verify everyone’s identity. Is there something wrong with that?”
“Well…” Liu Mang was stumped. If they were going by the book, Director Wang’s procedure was actually correct.
“Director Wang, is this really necessary? Just arrest him already,” Liu Mang frowned and said in a low voice.
Director Wang simply pretended not to hear and turned his head away.
Was it necessary? Hell yes, it was! Director Wang thought to himself, “How else am I supposed to figure out which deity this young man is without checking his ID?”
Seeing Director Wang turn his head away, Liu Mang was furious. Fine, you big-headed bastard. Just wait. I’ll find a chance to badmouth you right in front of the leaders.
Lin Hai watched from the side, feeling a bit confused.
What the hell? This wasn’t right.
Normally, shouldn’t this Director Wang be an accomplice that these people called in?
Shouldn’t he have stormed in, ignored who was right or wrong, and arrested Lin Hai and Liu Liang and his father first, maybe even beaten them up a bit?
Wasn’t that how it worked in the novels?
But this Director Wang guy—why wasn’t he following the script?
Could he actually be a good guy? But looking at his fierce, thuggish face, if he really was a good guy, it would be such a waste of his perfect villainous look.
“You, ID!” Just then, an officer came up to Lin Hai.
“Don’t have it,” Lin Hai said honestly.
“Don’t have it? Why not?”
“Why would anyone carry their ID around for no reason?” Lin Hai gave the officer a strange look.
“Hey, watch your attitude. Hurry up and—”
Before the officer could finish, Director Wang quickly walked over.
“Alright, go collect the others’. I’ll question him personally.” Director Wang hurriedly sent the officer away.
Damn, this guy might just be some untouchable big shot. No way could he be treated like an ordinary person.
“Comrade, if you don’t have your ID with you, please tell us your name, occupation, and home address. We need to take a statement,” Director Wang said, even giving Lin Hai a serious salute.
The officers by the door rubbed their eyes in disbelief.
What the hell? Was this really their director? His attitude was so professional, it was like he was actually acting like a real cop.
Well… crap, their director was a real cop.
Director Wang noticed his subordinates’ expressions and couldn’t help but smirk.
These young punks were still green. When dealing with someone of unknown status who was extremely arrogant, you had to be polite first and save the force for later.
If the guy really had connections, handling things by the book meant you wouldn’t offend anyone.
If he was just a poser, well, then you could just nail him to the wall once the truth came out and make up for all the earlier politeness tenfold.
He’d been director for so many years, holding his position steady. Did they really think that was all just luck?
“My name is…”
Before Lin Hai could finish, a person suddenly appeared at the entrance of the private room.
Director Wang instinctively looked up, and then his eyes went wide.
