Yu Xiaoduo couldn’t help but burst out laughing. In the end, he quickly handed the fat guy a cigarette to calm him down, and even promised to help him rank up in the game.
After arriving at the company, things went on as usual—nothing special, except for Manager He’s constant, caring little comments here and there.
At noon, the two of them timed it perfectly to grab lunch, but Yu Xiaoduo overheard some strange murmurs.
“Did you hear? Apparently, General Manager Gu didn’t even show up to today’s weekly meeting.”
“Of course I heard. People are saying she’s being pushed out of power in the company.”
“So she’s just skipping the weekly meeting altogether?”
Hearing all this gossip, Yu Xiaoduo frowned. Beside him, Zhao Liang suddenly gave him a thumbs-up and said, “Brother Yu, you’re something else. You’ve got General Gu so worked up she still hasn’t come back to work.”
Yu Xiaoduo replied, “If I really went all out, she probably wouldn’t be able to get out of bed for a week.”
He took out his phone and called Gu Wan’er, but again, no answer. This made Yu Xiaoduo feel like something was off. She cared so much about the company—there was no way she wouldn’t show up unless something was wrong.
“Fatty, give me your car keys,” Yu Xiaoduo said seriously.
Zhao Liang responded with an “Oh,” and asked, “Brother Yu, want me to request time off for you?”
“Yeah.”
Watching Yu Xiaoduo stride away, Zhao Liang let out a long sigh. General Gu was about to endure Brother Yu’s “torment” again. It really made him envy Yu Xiaoduo’s daily life.
Yu Xiaoduo got into Zhao Liang’s new car and couldn’t help but notice how weird the power felt. Wasn’t this supposed to be an RS7? A suited gangster? Why did it feel almost the same as his own 530?
Did something break?
He quickly pulled over, popped the hood, and was instantly dumbfounded.
He’d been completely fooled by the fat guy. This wasn’t an RS7 at all. It was a 2.0-liter A7 with an RS body kit, and even the interior had been modified. What a character.
Back in the car, Yu Xiaoduo made several more calls, but still no one picked up. Could she have been so upset that she actually hung herself? If so, he’d be a real sinner.
Luckily, he had been here before, and the security guard let him through without any trouble.
Yu Xiaoduo knew the villa’s passcode like the back of his hand. When he stepped inside, the living room looked just like it had the night before. He hurried upstairs to the bedroom.
After opening the door, he saw Gu Wan’er lying on the bed, and he let out a sigh of relief.
“General Gu, are you really acting like a little kid and ignoring my calls out of anger?” Yu Xiaoduo said with a smile. But Gu Wan’er didn’t respond.
He walked around to the other side and saw that her face was pale and clammy with sweat. Her dry, cracked lips were trembling uncontrollably, like she was in a lot of pain.
“Whoa, what’s wrong with you?” Yu Xiaoduo sat down on the bed and felt her forehead with his hand. It was a little warm.
Just then, Gu Wan’er opened her eyes. Seeing Yu Xiaoduo sitting beside her, she said weakly, “What are you doing here? Get out.” With that, she turned her back to him. But the movement seemed to make the pain even worse, and she winced.
“Gu Wan’er, there’s no need to make yourself suffer just to be stubborn.”
“I don’t need you to care. All you ever do is make things worse for me.”
Looking at her expression, this seemed to go beyond just bad menstrual cramps.
“I’m taking you to the hospital.”
“No.”
“Are you going or not?!”
“No!”
Oh, come on! There’s no way I can’t handle you!
He just scooped Gu Wan’er up from the bed. But the scene was a little too intimate—mainly because she had a habit of sleeping without clothes.
“Yu Xiaoduo!” the weak Gu Wan’er yelled in fury. How shameless!
“It’s not like I haven’t seen it before. Let me find you some clothes to put on.”
At this point, the exhausted Gu Wan’er was no match for Yu Xiaoduo. She could only keep cursing him as he scolded her back, until he finally tossed her into the car.
At the hospital, Yu Xiaoduo went straight to the emergency room. Gu Wan’er was in so much pain she could barely walk.
When the doctor asked Gu Wan’er, “Did you eat anything unusual last night?”
Gu Wan’er pointed angrily at Yu Xiaoduo beside her. “Ask him.”
“Uh… some chicken feet, chicken wings, and cake…”
“Anything else?”
“And a braised pig trotter, iced cola, and some snacks.” By the time he finished, Yu Xiaoduo looked a little embarrassed. Even Gu Wan’er shot him a murderous glare.
“Based on initial judgment, this is likely acute gastroenteritis. How could you feed your girlfriend such a random mix of foods? And switching between hot and cold like that… tsk.” The doctor’s words drew stares and murmurs from the people around, most of them feeling sorry for such a beautiful girl like Gu Wan’er for having such an irresponsible boyfriend.
Yu Xiaoduo also looked a bit sheepish. “I’ll be more careful from now on.”
“We’ll start with IV fluids to reduce the inflammation. Take some medication and see how it goes.”
“Thank you, doctor.” Yu Xiaoduo quickly helped Gu Wan’u up, and she immediately pinched the flesh around his waist hard. This is all your fault.
Yu Xiaoduo knew he was in the wrong, so he just let her vent.
He helped Gu Wan’er into the IV room and then rushed off to get her medicine. Who was he to blame? Last night’s hot-and-cold feast had really done a number on her.
“General Gu, take your medicine first,” Yu Xiaoduo said softly as he sat beside her.
But Gu Wan’er turned her face away, clearly still angry.
Just then, a nurse walked over carrying the “tools.” Gu Wan’er furrowed her brows slightly. She had an inexplicable fear of needles. She remembered getting a shot as a child, and blood had sprayed everywhere. Ever since then, she’d avoided hospitals, toughing out even minor illnesses.
“Time for your shot. Stick out your hand,” the nurse said after hanging the IV bag. But Gu Wan’er kept both hands in her pockets.
“It’s time for the shot,” Yu Xiaoduo reminded her.
Gu Wan’er closed her eyes and said, “I’m not doing it.”
This really gave Yu Xiaoduo a headache. Was it necessary to torture herself just to prove a point? That was such childish behavior.
“Oh, come on. Don’t be mad. Let’s just get the shot, take the medicine, and the pain will go away,” Yu Xiaoduo coaxed with a smile.
But Gu Wan’er just gave up completely, flat-out refusing.
The nurse said plainly, “Let me know when she’s ready.”
Yu Xiaoduo could feel people around staring, like they were waiting for him to make a fool of himself. Here he was, trying to soothe his boss.
“General Gu, I sincerely apologize for my reckless eating and drinking last night,” Yu Xiaoduo said seriously, as earnestly as he could manage.
But Gu Wan’er didn’t budge. She had an expression that said, I don’t need your pity. Just let me die in pain.
“General Gu, you really need to take care of yourself. What if Sister Bai calls? How are you supposed to go looking like this?”
Seeing that nothing was working, Yu Xiaoduo quickly changed tactics. “Little Wan’er, don’t be mad anymore. Be good and get the shot and take your medicine.”
Gu Wan’er almost gagged. Did he think she was three years old? She snapped her eyes open and glared at him.
So this approach did get a reaction.
“Your mom kept praising me this morning. She made me sound like a toad. It was really pitiful.”
“That’s exactly what you are.”
Hearing Gu Wan’er speak, Yu Xiaoduo smiled and said, “You’re right. But even a swan like you needs to take care of yourself. If you rot away, you won’t taste good anymore.”
