Super Doctor - Chapter 94
As the patient’s chest rapidly expanded with each squeeze of the ambu bag in Old Doctor Zhang’s hands, oxygen flowed into her lungs. Only then did Xu Ze finally let out a sigh of relief before continuing his external cardiac compressions.
By now, Xu Ze had already delivered dozens of bioelectric stimulations to the patient’s heart through the ring on his finger, attempting to restore her heartbeat. However, the allergens in her body were still exerting a powerful countereffect, rendering his bioelectric stimulations ineffective.
Placing his hand over the patient’s heart, Xu Ze felt the flatline feedback from the ring’s ECG readings. His expression darkened. He had always known how dangerous penicillin allergies could be, but he hadn’t expected the allergens to be so stubborn. They had to intensify the antiallergic treatment—otherwise, suppressing the allergens would be impossible, and saving the patient would be out of the question.
“Establish a second IV line—250ml of 5% glucose with 100mg hydrocortisone for IV drip, then 20ml of 50% glucose with 20ml of 20% calcium gluconate for IV push. Now!” Xu Ze instructed Sister Luo once again.
Old Doctor Zhang was equally tense. He knew that if this patient wasn’t successfully resuscitated, he’d be in deep trouble—not only would he have to pay hundreds of thousands in compensation, but the clinic’s reputation would also take a massive hit.
He had initially considered taking over the resuscitation efforts himself, but seeing Xu Ze’s calm and methodical commands—along with his accurate and systematic medication orders—he held back. Remembering Xu Ze’s past performance, he decided to leave the resuscitation entirely in the younger doctor’s hands, simply following orders while continuing to squeeze the ambu bag.
The patient’s family, seeing Xu Ze’s composed demeanor as he directed the emergency measures—and even the older doctor deferring to him—felt somewhat reassured. Still, they stood anxiously by, waiting for the outcome.
Xu Ze kept up the chest compressions, maintaining the bioelectric stimulation, then glanced at Zhao Qilong, whose face was tight with tension. “How long has it been?”
Zhao Qilong hurriedly checked his watch. “Three minutes…”
“Three minutes already…” Xu Ze took a quiet breath, his expression growing even grimmer. Three minutes without restoring the heartbeat—even though the chest compressions were sustaining some circulation, they had to restart the heart within the next two minutes. Otherwise, if brain hypoxia reached its limit and brain death set in, further resuscitation would be nearly meaningless.
“Are all the meds administered?” Xu Ze paused his compressions, waiting for Old Doctor Zhang to squeeze the ambu bag and deliver oxygen, then turned to Sister Luo.
Sister Luo quickly replied, “Everything’s been given.”
Xu Ze nodded, then looked at Old Doctor Zhang at the bedside and asked gravely, “Doctor Zhang, any additional steps?”
“You’re doing well. We’ll do our best.” Old Doctor Zhang studied Xu Ze’s composed but tense expression and gave a slow nod of approval.
Nearby, the young man—the patient’s boyfriend—couldn’t hold back his tears at their exchange. Yet, he remained rational, not interfering with the resuscitation, only watching silently from the corner with a hand over his mouth.
A few other patients receiving IV drips nearby also watched nervously. Many were long-time patients of the clinic, worried for its reputation. They all knew that if someone really died from an allergic reaction here, Old Doctor Zhang would face serious consequences.
“Increase bioelectric current—maximum stimulation!” Xu Ze ordered, never pausing his rapid chest compressions.
This was their last hope—their final two minutes. Xu Ze had never believed in miracles. He didn’t believe that after confirmed cardiac arrest, a heart could restart after dozens of minutes without beating.
Even if such cases existed, they could only be attributed to sheer luck—perhaps a misdiagnosis of death or an undetected faint heartbeat.
The bioelectric currents from the ring surged wildly, as if costless, intensifying with each compression, relentlessly bombarding the patient’s heart with stronger and stronger shocks.
Only Xiao Dao in the virtual space watched the energy reserves plummet in real-time, his face growing increasingly sour. Grumbling under his breath, he muttered, “Wastrel… Xu Ze, you absolute wastrel… All the energy we painstakingly stored, and you’re burning through it like this…”
Beep—
Heartbeat restored.
Just as Xu Ze, sweating from exertion, was pressing down with all his strength, this heavenly system notification rang in his ears.
He immediately stopped and excitedly turned to Zhao Qilong. “Run an ECG!”
“Ah—” Zhao Qilong froze for a second at Xu Ze’s exhilarated expression before snapping back to reality. His face lit up with overwhelming joy as he fumbled to activate the ECG machine.
Shhh…
As the ECG paper slowly scrolled out, both Old Doctor Zhang and Zhao Qilong stared fixedly at the thin strip. When they saw the distinct waveform spikes, they couldn’t help but gasp in relief. “It’s back… It’s back!”
Looking at the ECG, where each spike was spaced far apart, Xu Ze frowned slightly. Although the heartbeat had returned, it was dangerously slow and unstable—it could stop again at any moment. He quickly barked at Sister Luo, who was also beaming with excitement, “Another 1mg epinephrine, IV push—now!”
“Yes—hurry!” Old Doctor Zhang, snapping back to focus, urged anxiously but eagerly.
Seeing the doctors’ relieved smiles, the young man and the other patients nearby also brightened. A few of the regulars began murmuring in admiration, “Doctor Xu really is amazing. So much more reliable than that Doctor Zhao…”
“Yeah… Doctor Zhao’s face went completely white earlier.”
As the heart-strengthening epinephrine took effect, the young woman’s heartbeat gradually steadied and strengthened. In Old Doctor Zhang’s stethoscope, the rhythmic thump-thump-thump was music to his ears.
The ECG now showed a pulse of over sixty beats per minute. Xu Ze checked the patient’s face—her complexion had regained its color—then shone a penlight into her pupils. The light reflex was normal, and her responsiveness was good. Only then did he finally relax.
The young man, tear-streaked, looked at Xu Ze with hopeful anxiety. “Doctor, my girlfriend…?”
Xu Ze smiled and nodded. “Don’t worry. She’s stable now—she should wake up soon.”
“Thank you… Thank you so much!” The young man, now completely overjoyed, grabbed Xu Ze’s hand, shaking it repeatedly in gratitude.
The other patients in the room also exhaled in relief, their faces breaking into smiles.
A short while later, the young woman’s eyelids fluttered slightly before slowly opening under the watchful gazes of everyone present. Her boyfriend clutched her hand tightly, tears streaming down his face as he laughed through them.
“Yuanyuan… You’re awake… You’re finally awake… You scared me to death… Really, you scared me to death…”
