Super Doctor - Chapter 198
Li Yue personally drove Xu Ze to a base located outside the city. As they entered the base and were met by a Major, Xu Ze raised an eyebrow slightly and smiled. “Captain Li…”
“Ah… Mr. Xu? Is that you?” Captain Li was startled that the visitor knew him, but he quickly remembered who this young doctor, introduced by Elder Li, was.
“Elder Li asked me to come take a look. Was it one of your men who was injured?” Xu Ze asked calmly.
Although surprised by the young doctor’s age, Captain Li remembered Mr. Lin’s praise for Xu Ze’s skills and Elder Li’s high regard for him. He didn’t dare be negligent. Since Mr. Xu belonged to the same category of experts as Mr. Lin, judging him by his age was unwise. Mr. Lin himself was young, yet his martial arts and medical skills were undeniably impressive.
Captain Li quickly shook hands with Xu Ze respectfully. “Yes, it’s one of my subordinates. You already helped us immensely last time, Mr. Xu, and now we’re troubling you again…”
“Don’t mention it. It’s the least I can do.”
Li Yue watched the exchange curiously. “Captain Li, you two know each other?”
“Know each other? Of course!” Captain Li laughed. “Li Yue, just a few days ago, Mr. Xu helped us a great deal. He helped us take down a Japanese spy.”
“A Japanese spy?” Li Yue’s eyes lit up with curiosity as he looked at Xu Ze. “Xu Ze, was that the day our car got damaged?”
Xu Ze smiled and nodded. “Yes, that was the day. But that little Japanese devil fell to his own death.”
“Haha… Mr. Xu, you’re too modest. Mr. Lin said that if it weren’t for you, that spy would have gotten away,” Captain Li said with a hearty laugh.
Captain Li led the two further into the base. After passing through several secure doors, they arrived at the room where the patient was.
Captain Li walked to the bedside and said to Xu Ze, “Mr. Xu… our soldier was injured by a throwing knife from that same Japanese spy and was poisoned. We’ve tried every possible method. With Mr. Lin’s help, we managed to control it and save his life, but he still can’t move and is in pain all over.”
“A throwing knife? Neurotoxin?” Xu Ze frowned, recalling the poison on the knife from that day.
“Yes… You know about it, Mr. Xu?” Captain Li’s heart leapt with a spark of hope.
Xu Ze nodded. “I examined the knife that day… it was coated with poison.”
He looked at the patient on the bed, at the young face still contorted with pain even in sleep, and sighed softly.
His attention was then drawn to the few silver needles visible at the soldier’s hairline. Recognizing them, Xu Ze raised an eyebrow and asked Captain Li with a smile, “Are these needles left by Lin Zhiyuan?”
“Yes… Mr. Lin left them. It’s only thanks to his acupuncture and herbal medicine that our soldier is still alive,” Captain Li confirmed with feeling.
“I see. Not many people can wield silver needles with such skill these days,” Xu Ze remarked, nodding. Then he asked, “Where is Lin Zhiyuan? Has he left already?”
“Mr. Lin left yesterday,” Captain Li replied.
“What a pity. I was hoping to chat with him,” Xu Ze said, shaking his head slightly. “Alright, let me take a look.”
He conducted a brief examination. Seeing that the skin around the wound had returned to its normal color, he frowned. He turned to Captain Li and Li Yue. “Could you both step outside for a moment? I need to examine him further.”
After exchanging a glance, Li Yue and Captain Li nodded, left the room, and closed the door, leaving Xu Ze alone with the patient.
Once the door was shut, Xu Ze looked at the sleeping patient. He gently raised his right hand, pressed it against the wound, and a hair-thin needle emerged from his ring finger, piercing the skin. He commanded in a low voice, “Activate the biochemical toxin analyzer.”
Beep… Insufficient clearance level. Unable to activate. The automated system promptly responded.
“Insufficient clearance, as expected,” Xu Ze sighed softly and shook his head helplessly.
“That function requires a higher clearance level… one you don’t have access to yet,” Xiao Dao’s voice echoed helplessly in his mind. “Without analysis, treatment will be very difficult.”
“I know,” Xu Ze nodded slowly, his brow furrowed tightly. “But we can’t just give up… We have to think of something.”
He sat down on a nearby sofa and began pondering the problem.
Primary Battlefield Medicine did contain some treatment methods for biochemical and toxic injuries… but for an unknown neurotoxin like this, there were no specific remedies.
“Neurotoxin… neurotoxin…” Xu Ze rubbed his forehead and sighed. This poison was truly troublesome. How to solve this…
“No way. Without analysis, we can’t solve it,” Xiao Dao stated with certainty in his mind.
“No analysis… no analysis…” Xu Ze’s frown deepened. “Then what do we do?”
He thought for a long time but couldn’t come up with a good solution. In theory, a Super Medicsystem possessed treatments for all diseases and combat injuries, but his current level was too low—only Level 2. Many functions were inaccessible, and he lacked specific antidotes, leaving him powerless against this kind of toxic injury.
After pacing around the patient for what felt like ages, his head starting to ache from the strain, Xu Ze finally shook his head and sighed. “Forget it… let’s leave it for now. Since we’ve gathered some information, we’ll head back and see if there are any other approaches.”
He walked out of the room. Captain Li and Li Yue approached him eagerly. “How is it? Any ideas?”
Xu Ze shook his head gently and looked at Captain Li with a wry smile. “This neurotoxin… have you had it analyzed?”
Seeing Xu Ze’s resigned expression, Captain Li’s heart sank, but he replied, “It’s been sent for analysis, but they haven’t produced any results yet.”
“I see…” A flicker of disappointment crossed Xu Ze’s face. He nodded and said, “Alright… I can’t think of a solution right now. I’ll go back and analyze it further… If I find a way, I’ll notify you as soon as possible.”
Hearing this, a glimmer of hope appeared in Captain Li’s eyes. The fact that Xu Ze hadn’t outright said it was impossible meant there might still be a chance. With no other options left, any shred of hope was precious. He quickly nodded. “Okay, thank you for your trouble, Mr. Xu.”
On the drive back to the hotel, Li Yue looked at Xu Ze hopefully. “Xu Ze… is there really no way?”
Xu Ze shook his head gently. “I haven’t thought of a good method yet. I need to go back and think some more.”
“Alright… Please try your best. These soldiers are invaluable assets to the country. They risk their lives to protect it; it’s not easy for them. Please do everything you can,” Li Yue urged solemnly.
“I know. I’ll do my best,” Xu Ze nodded.
Back at the hotel, Xu Ze took a shower and sat on the sofa. He turned on the TV, but his mind was far from the screen, completely occupied with the soldier’s condition, desperately searching for any other way to tackle this unknown neurotoxin.
After thinking for a long time, however, Xu Ze realized that without a precise analysis of the neurotoxin’s properties, he was essentially powerless against it.
“There must be a way, there must be…” he muttered to himself, standing up and pacing restlessly around the room. He thought hard for a while longer, and suddenly, something occurred to him.
“He was poisoned many days ago… Lin Zhiyuan already performed acupuncture and administered herbal antidotes, with good results… So that means…” A light seemed to switch on in Xu Ze’s mind.
If Lin Zhiyuan’s treatment had been effective, it meant he had managed to control some of the toxin. The soldier’s condition had been improving over these days. The main issues now were the lingering pain and paralysis. It was highly likely that the toxin itself was already under control; otherwise, such improvement would be difficult to achieve. Given the current symptoms, it was probable that these were just sequelae—after-effects—caused by nerve damage from the toxin.
“If that’s the case, then there might be a way…” Xu Ze stroked his chin, thinking. If these were just sequelae from nerve damage, then there might still be ways to help.
With his bio-electrical energy, combined with some modern nerve maintenance and repair agents, it might still be possible to help the soldier recover…
He just didn’t know what nerve repair agents were currently available. These were among the most advanced medical technologies. Apart from his futuristic medical knowledge, Xu Ze wasn’t entirely up-to-date on all the developments in modern medicine.
From his impression, there were several such agents, but not many would be effective for repairing nerve damage to this extent…
However, this naturally wasn’t an insurmountable problem for Xu Ze. With Xiao Dao’s help, was there anything he wanted to know that he couldn’t find out?
So, at Xu Ze’s command, Xiao Dao swiftly connected to the wireless network and began searching for and analyzing information on relevant drugs. After processing and organizing the data, he presented it to Xu Ze for reference…
“Neurotrophic Factor-8… Nerve Strengthening Solution No.1… Nerve Stimulation Repair Fluid… Carmonine… Quibit…” Looking at the list of drugs and information displayed by Xiao Dao, Xu Ze’s head started to ache again. Many of these high-end drugs were synthetic products of top-tier biochemical technology from other countries, and would likely be impossible to obtain…
The only one that seemed promising was the ‘Nerve Stimulation Repair Fluid,’ the latest research result from a domestic institute… Reportedly still in the trial stage, but according to the data, its effects were significantly stronger than those of so-called nerve repair drugs currently on the market…
