Reborn in the 80s: My Whole Family Secretly Hears My Thoughts and Goes Wild with Success! - Chapter 94
While waiting for their food, Shen Zhiqiu asked Meng Fang, “Sister-in-law, does our hospital still keep medical records from over a decade ago?”
“I’m not sure. I’d have to ask the archives department. Why?”
Shen Zhiqiu was direct. “Wang Fengqin gave birth to Shen Xiang at People’s Hospital. I want to check her medical records from back then.”
“Then come find me at work tomorrow. I’ll take you to the archives and see if we can dig anything up.”
“Alright, thank you.”
After their meal, the two headed to the nearby night market.
The entire street was lined with stalls on both sides—selling clothes, shoes, bags, and daily necessities.
Yue Mingde’s stall was right in the middle, under a streetlamp, impossible to miss.
Spotting him from a distance, Meng Fang nudged Shen Zhiqiu lightly. “Looks like business is pretty good, huh? Maybe we shouldn’t disturb him.”
“I was thinking the same.”
“Come on, let’s check out that bag stall.” Meng Fang pulled Shen Zhiqiu toward a vendor selling handbags.
“Shen Zhiqiu?”
While browsing, Shen Zhiqiu heard her name and turned to see Lu Shuangshuang and Kang Zhixin standing nearby.
Both were Shen Liya’s former roommates—once inseparable from her, and always at odds with Shen Zhiqiu.
Seeing people she disliked, Shen Zhiqiu couldn’t be bothered to pretend. She gave them a curt nod in acknowledgment.
“Which bag do you like? I’ll buy it for you.” Lu Shuangshuang approached awkwardly.
Shen Zhiqiu frowned, immediately guessing her motive. “Trying to repay a favor?”
Clearing her throat uncomfortably, Lu Shuangshuang muttered, “I don’t like owing people. Since we ran into each other, might as well settle it now.”
“If you’re offering, I won’t refuse. This one.”
Shen Zhiqiu pointed to a decent-looking bag and asked the vendor, “How much?”
“This is genuine Guangdong leather—top quality. Fifteen yuan.”
“Look at the craftsmanship. Even celebrities in Hong Kong carry these. You’ve got great taste.”
Shen Zhiqiu tilted her head, signaling for Lu Shuangshuang to pay. Just as she reached for her wallet, Kang Zhixin yanked her aside.
“Shuangshuang-jie, are you serious? Fifteen yuan is way too much!”
“She wasn’t even helping you that day—she was helping herself! Why bother repaying her? If anything, you got dragged into her mess because of her feud with Shen Liya. They should’ve kept their family drama at home instead of involving you. It’s ridiculous!”
Kang Zhixin’s words made Lu Shuangshuang hesitate. But backing out now would embarrass her, leaving her stuck.
“Shuangshuang-jie, my birthday’s coming up. Why not buy that bag for me instead? When your birthday rolls around, just tell me what you want—I’ll get it for you!”
As Kang Zhixin spoke, she kept eyeing the bag in Shen Zhiqiu’s hands, seething. That bitch took it first—how shameless!
“Here’s the money.”
Seeing the situation unfold, Shen Zhiqiu paid the vendor—including the bag Meng Fang had picked. “Sister-in-law, wait here. I need to talk to them.”
“Go ahead.”
Approaching the pair, Shen Zhiqiu focused on Kang Zhixin. “Kang Zhixin, do you have an older brother named Kang Zhishou?”
She wasn’t familiar with Kang Zhixin’s family, only that her father, Kang Zhengqing, was deputy director of the Traditional Medicine Hospital. Kang Zhixin was the youngest, with an older sister, Kang Zhimiao, married into the Xu family of the Air Force compound.
When Xu Kui mentioned Kang Zhishou earlier, Shen Zhiqiu had immediately connected the dots.
“Yes, he’s my eldest brother.” Kang Zhixin frowned. “You know him?”
“No. Just heard his name today.”
“Must’ve been one of his patients. He’s an excellent doctor—people praise him all the time.”
Kang Zhixin puffed up proudly, tucking her hair behind her ear. Her attempt at humility came off as painfully affected.
Shen Zhiqiu shook her head. “Not a patient. Someone who served with him in the Red Guards. They were reminiscing about the past.”
“Ask him when you get home—does he remember the ‘counter-revolutionaries’ he denounced and crushed back then?”
“Why should he remember them? They got what they deserved!”
The words ignited Shen Zhiqiu’s fury. Her gaze turned razor-sharp. “What did they deserve? What crimes did they commit? Lies will always find excuses! Your brother knows exactly what he did—how much blood stains his hands!”
“Shen Zhiqiu! How dare you slander my brother!” Kang Zhixin stormed forward, jabbing a finger at her. “You think marrying into the Yue family makes you untouchable? Apologize now, or I’ll report you to my father—and the regimental commander!”
“Please do. Make sure you tell them everything, understood?”
Shen Zhiqiu’s condescending tone made Kang Zhixin flush with humiliation. Too cowardly to confront her directly, she tugged at Lu Shuangshuang’s sleeve. “Shuangshuang-jie, she’s bullying me!”
“After what happened last time, I thought you’d changed, Shen Zhiqiu. Turns out you’ve only gotten worse.”
Lu Shuangshuang stepped in, commanding, “Apologize to Zhixin.”
“Not bad—used the right idiom this time.”
Shen Zhiqiu clapped slowly, then pointed at Lu Shuangshuang’s eyes. “But you haven’t changed. Still terrible judgment—still can’t tell friend from foe.”
“And still just as dim. One word from her, and you rush to be her attack dog.”
“Shen Zhiqiu! How dare you insult me!”
That was all Lu Shuangshuang registered. The deeper meaning sailed right over her head.
“Shouldn’t I? Who are you to demand I apologize? What does this have to do with you?”
Shen Zhiqiu’s retort left Lu Shuangshuang speechless. Kang Zhixin clung to her arm. “Shuangshuang-jie is my friend. It’s only right she stands up for me!”
Lu Shuangshuang nodded fervently, righteous indignation plastered across her face. “Exactly! You can’t bully Zhixin!”
“Lu Shuangshuang, how exactly did I ‘bully’ Kang Zhixin? Did I curse her? Hit her? She called me a ‘broken shoe’—shouldn’t she apologize to me?”
Seeing Lu Shuangshuang falter, Kang Zhixin jumped in. “Shuangshuang-jie, she slandered my brother first! You heard her! If the regimental commander asks, you’ll back me up, right?”
