Reborn in the 80s: My Whole Family Secretly Hears My Thoughts and Goes Wild with Success! - Chapter 107
“Girl, I just wanted to ask—would you consider meeting my son?”
“I know you’re busy with your studies and focused on doing well, so just whenever you have time.”
“Now, I’m not one to boast, but that boy of mine isn’t half bad in any way. Of course, romance depends on chemistry. If you meet him and don’t take a liking to him, I won’t say another word—just means the fool’s got no luck.”
“But if you think he’s alright, why not give it a try?”
“I won’t lie to you—I’d really love to have you as my daughter-in-law.”
Ling Chao only knew that Ye Jiawen had refused to meet Ling Hang. He had no idea that after their encounter, she’d changed her mind.
The more he thought about it, the more he couldn’t let it go. When he found out that Yue Guohuai had invited Ye Yunlin’s family over today, he decided to try again.
At the very least, he wanted them to meet once. If they didn’t click, then so be it.
But what if they did? He’d gain a daughter-in-law he liked—and maybe even a little granddaughter someday.
All eyes turned to Ye Jiawen, whose cheeks flushed slightly. She gave a small nod. “Uncle Ling, I’ll meet him.”
Ling Chao’s face lit up with joy. He raised his glass to her. “Thank you, girl.”
“You’re too kind, Uncle Ling.”
After dinner, Ling Chao left early for another engagement. Li Shuying pulled Ye Jiawen aside. “Jiawen, what’s going on?”
“Just what you heard. Uncle Ling wants to set me up with his son—wants me as his daughter-in-law.”
“After Yaya’s full-moon banquet, Zhiqiu mentioned it to me. At the time, I was only thinking about my studies, so I refused. I didn’t expect Uncle Ling to bring it up again today.”
“I just asked Sister Wan about it. Ling’s youngest son has a good reputation—meeting him wouldn’t hurt.”
Li Shuying patted Ye Jiawen’s hand. “Jiawen, you’re not so young anymore. It’s time to think about dating and marriage—though your studies still come first.”
“Times have changed. Men and women are equal now—women hold up half the sky. It’s not like the old days where men worked outside and women stayed home, where family was a woman’s only focus.”
“The reason I pushed you to study hard is because I want you to achieve something. Don’t throw away this opportunity for love or family.”
“Remember, no matter what, love is like flowers in a mirror or the moon reflected in water—beautiful but unreal. Real skills are what you can rely on in life.”
“Only when you’re capable will men truly respect and cherish you. Otherwise, you’re just a plaything—something they pick up when they feel like it and discard when they don’t.”
“My words might sound harsh, but they’re true. Your father and I just want you to be happy.”
Ye Jiawen was deeply moved. She leaned against Li Shuying’s shoulder. “Mom, I will be happy.”
“Actually… I’ve already met Ling Hang. He’s… he’s nice.”
A mother knows her daughter best. Even without seeing Ye Jiawen’s expression, Li Shuying could tell from her tone that her daughter had feelings for Ling Hang. Her heart swelled with both warmth and bittersweet ache.
Warmth, because her little girl had grown up and found someone she liked.
Bittersweet, because it meant she would one day leave them.
Children were like eaglets—sooner or later, they had to fly to another sky. All parents could do was wish them well.
“If my girl says he’s good, then he must be.”
Li Shuying tapped Ye Jiawen’s nose playfully. “Jiawen, it’s not easy to meet someone you like. Don’t be shy—go after him boldly. Happiness is something you have to fight for yourself.”
“Mom, I don’t even know if he likes me.” Ye Jiawen twisted a strand of her hair, uncertain.
Li Shuying was straightforward. “Then ask him. Since you’ve already met, he must have some impression of you, good or bad.”
“If it’s good, give it a try. If not, move on. And if he’s the wishy-washy type, forget it. A man who hesitates won’t achieve anything.”
“Back when I met your dad, I took one look and asked him straight out what he thought of me. He said I was alright, so we got together.”
“After spending some time together and seeing no major issues, we filed for marriage.”
Ye Jiawen sat up and looked at her mother. “Mom, what counts as ‘no major issues’?”
She had no experience in this at all. She’d thought about asking Zhiqiu, but Zhiqiu’s situation wasn’t much of a reference.
Now that her mother had brought it up, she might as well learn.
Li Shuying counted off on her fingers. “First, he can’t have major flaws—no gambling, no cheating, no violence. A man who’s unfaithful or hits women isn’t a man at all. And no arrogance, empty talk, or stinginess either.”
Ye Jiawen nodded firmly. “Mom, I’m not collecting trash. A man like that? I wouldn’t want him even if you didn’t say anything.”
“Mom, I meant—how did you decide to marry Dad?” She hugged Li Shuying’s arm, eyes bright with curiosity.
Li Shuying thought back. “I’m talkative; your dad’s the silent type. Everyone thought we were a bad match.”
“But being with him made me happy—really at ease.”
“My thinking was simple: life’s long. If two people are going to spend it together, it has to feel right. If it’s just arguing and anger every day, then no way.”
“What are you two talking about?”
Ye Yunlin walked over, wrapping his arms around Li Shuying from behind and resting his chin on her shoulder. His cheek pressed against hers. “Shuying, I’m a little drunk. Let me lean on you for a bit.”
“Had a good time drinking?” Li Shuying patted his face.
Ye Yunlin caught her hand and kissed it, grinning goofily. “The best! My wife’s the prettiest!”
“Welp, he’s definitely drunk.” Li Shuying turned to Ye Jiawen. “Go get your dad some plum juice to sober him up.”
As Ye Jiawen walked away, she glanced back at her parents, her heart full of envy.
For as long as she could remember, her parents had always been this loving.
Sure, they argued sometimes—but they always made up quickly.
Her dad might not be much of a talker, but he knew how to charm her mom, always saying just the right thing to make her smile.
And her mom, the iron lady to everyone else, became sweet and tender around him.
After drinking the plum juice, Ye Yunlin sobered up a little. He looked at Ye Jiawen. “Jiawen, your mom told me everything. I’ll just say this: you’re our treasure. We’ve never let you suffer at home—don’t you go making yourself suffer now.”
“And if anyone else dares to make you suffer? Absolutely not. As long as I can still move, I’ll protect you. And when I can’t, there’s still Xiaowu!”
“You just focus on being happy and doing what you want. Your old man’s got your back.”
