Reborn in Each Other’s Bodies: A Mother and Daughter’s Deadly Revenge - Chapter 13
Everyone in the village knew the Feng family’s sixth daughter was unloved. Perhaps it was because the second branch of the family had four girls in a row, or maybe because Feng Lao-er’s wife had ruined her health after giving birth to Liu Ya (Sixth Daughter), leaving her unable to bear more children. Whatever the reason, Liu Ya was disliked by the Feng family.
But no matter what, she was still their own flesh and blood—how could they treat their own child so horribly?
Taohua Village was close to the capital, and the villagers had plenty of ways to make a living. Their lives were decent, and for years, there had never been cases of selling children or abusing them.
Today, the Feng family had truly opened their eyes. Some of the more righteous villagers were already cursing.
“Pah! Is this how you raise a granddaughter? Looks to me like the granddaughter’s raising you! Even landlords aren’t as bloodsucking as you!”
“That’s right! If a child like her is ‘useless,’ then what does that make the Feng family’s two boys and three other girls? Aren’t they even worse than useless?”
“Even a vicious tiger wouldn’t harm its own cubs. What kind of heartless monsters would make a six-year-old do so much work and only give her half a bowl of watery porridge a day? Are you trying to work her to death or starve her to death?”
The crowd hurled accusations one after another. Old Mrs. Li and Young Mrs. Li were furious, their chests heaving, but they couldn’t utter a single word in rebuttal.
Feng Lao-da and Feng Lao-er’s faces twisted in embarrassment.
Only Old Man Feng remained expressionless, his icy, sharp gaze fixed on Liu Ya.
Before, Liu Ya had been like a mute gourd—you couldn’t get a word out of her even if you beat her with a stick. So why was she so sharp-tongued today?
Had she been pushed too far and changed?
Or had she been pretending all along, and this was her true self?
Old Man Feng wasn’t sure anymore…
Liu Ya—now Huang Yaning—observed their reactions and felt somewhat satisfied.
Women who survived in the inner courtyards of wealthy households honed their acting skills over time. And when she thought of the suffering her Minmin had endured, her tears flowed uncontrollably. No acting was needed.
Huang Yaning continued crying, “Grandpas, grandmas, uncles, aunts, brothers, sisters… please don’t blame my family.”
“They’re just worried about the school fees for my elder cousins. I’ve thought it over—since I’m so useless, I should listen to Grandma and Auntie and go work in a brothel…”
“You’re talking nonsense—!”
Old Mrs. Li jumped in rage at the mention of a brothel. Even she knew selling a granddaughter to such a place would earn the family eternal scorn.
She roared and tried to rush forward to hit Liu Ya, but she was blocked by Old Lady He’s daughters-in-law, who had just arrived.
Huang Yaning pretended to tremble in fear.
Old Lady He shielded her like a mother hen, shooting Old Mrs. Li a disgusted look.
“Old Mrs. Li, with so many people watching, you still dare to hit Liu Ya?”
“Liu Ya, tell Granny He what happened today. Why did your grandma say that? What exactly did she say? Don’t be afraid—we’ll all stand up for you.”
“That’s right, Liu Ya. No one will hit you. We’re all watching.”
Only then did Huang Yaning, as if greatly encouraged, stammer out her story.
“I’ve always slept in the woodshed… with no blanket. It was so cold my body froze stiff… This morning, I woke up late…”
“Auntie was angry that I didn’t boil water or cook… She hit and scolded me…”
“My whole body hurt, and I hadn’t eaten… I couldn’t stand, so I crawled back to the woodshed and fell asleep…”
“I wanted to rest a little and then get back to work… but I didn’t expect to sleep the whole day…”
“Just now, Grandma and Auntie came home angry that I didn’t work today…”
As Huang Yaning recounted her suffering, her heart ached for her Minmin, and her tears flowed uncontrollably.
Many of the women in the crowd had reddened eyes. This child was too pitiful!
If their families had a girl as sensible and hardworking as Liu Ya, they would treasure her like gold.
But the Feng family? Damn them!
Old Mrs. Li and Young Mrs. Li, who despised Liu Ya, didn’t realize how cruel their actions sounded. They just glared at her venomously.
Feng Lao-da and Feng Lao-er, at least, had some shame. Their faces burned with embarrassment. Even Old Man Feng looked slightly uncomfortable.
“Grandma was furious… She said she’d sell me to a low-class brothel… where thousands of men would ride me, and tens of thousands would trample me…”
Her voice was weak, but everyone heard it clearly.
“You’re lying! It was you who grabbed a hatchet and tried to kill me! I only said that because I was angry—I didn’t mean it!” Old Mrs. Li, still held back by the He family women, screamed in panic.
Halfway through her outburst, she seemed to realize she’d misspoken and swallowed the rest of her words—but it was too late.
The crowd exploded like a boiling pot!
So the Feng family really were inhuman!
If the villagers had been watching with mild curiosity before, now they were fully enraged!
If even one girl from Taohua Village was sold to such a filthy place, how would the village’s reputation survive?
Who would dare marry their daughters into the village afterward? How would their own daughters ever find husbands?
What would happen to their sons’ and daughters’ futures?
At this point, the villagers truly wanted to tear the Feng family apart!
Seeing that the atmosphere was ripe, Huang Yaning added the final spark.
She forced a weak smile, her eyes red.
“Grandpas, grandmas, uncles, aunts… I know you’re all good people. My family must just be too poor. Please don’t blame them.”
“I don’t know what a brothel is, but if Grandma and Auntie say I can earn money there, then let them sell me.”
“I’ll work in the brothel and earn money for my elder cousins’ schooling…”
Her earnest, sincere expression—so willing to sacrifice for her family—only made the Feng family seem even more heartless and despicable.
A twelve- or thirteen-year-old girl in the crowd burst into loud sobs…
Her cries seemed to be a signal.
A burly man threw his hoe to the ground and lunged at Feng Lao-er, punching him square in the nose.
“Feng Lao-er, you spineless worm—do you even deserve to be a father?!”
Several other hot-blooded men could no longer hold back. They rushed forward, fists flying, each blow landing with a sickening thud. Feng Lao-er howled in pain.
“Elder Brother—help! Dad, Mom—save me!”
Feng Lao-da, selfish and cruel, only wanted to flee when he saw his brother’s plight. But the enraged men weren’t about to let him go. They grabbed his collar and threw him to the ground, beating him mercilessly.
“Your wife is a vicious shrew, and you did nothing to stop her! Now you want to sell your niece to a brothel to pay for your sons’ schooling?!”
“You damn bastard—!”
