After the Fall of the Demon Race, Reincarnated as a Demon Girl - Chapter 39
“Ohhh~ Good morning!”
Rubbing her drowsy eyes, Luo Jiani shuffled slowly out of her room and headed straight for the washroom.
From her look, she hadn’t overheard any of the outside conversation and had no idea about the terrible events of the previous night.
But some things are better left unknown.
“Well, you all go ahead with your tasks for today. I need to go to Brand University.”
“Do you have a way to get in?”
Antina asked curiously.
“Naturally, I do.”
Last night, Renith hadn’t only gone out to observe the gunfight—she had also been preparing to infiltrate Brand University. After such a severe shootout near the campus, parents and students were surely on edge; who would still be in the mood for school?
The gunfight had affected nearby residential buildings, and with so many students living there, borrowing a uniform close to Renith’s size wasn’t difficult at all.
So now, there was a uniform tucked away in Renith’s Codex space. Its owner was named Bosliya, apparently the daughter of a minor noble.
“Alright then, I’ll be off now. If I ‘borrow’ it for too long, it might raise suspicion.”
Renith went inside to change. Even though it was just “borrowed,” the uniform fit her perfectly. The black blazer clung to her figure, and the pure black skirt swayed lightly with her steps, revealing just the right amount of her thighs. Her fair skin seemed to glow like polished jade against the dark fabric.
Renith adjusted a sun hat firmly on her head, covering half her face. With a brown leather bag she’d picked up from who-knows-where slung over her shoulder, she strode confidently out the door under the astonished gazes of Luo Jiani and Vistal.
“That teacher… where on earth did she get those clothes she’s wearing?”
Luo Jiani blinked, a flash of disbelief in her eyes.
“Don’t trouble yourself over a mage’s affairs. Hurry up and wash your face—we’ve got work to do. Can’t keep our clients waiting.”
“So Miss Anna really is a mage! I thought she was joking before. Honestly, in all my life, I’ve only read about mages in books… She must know lots of powerful magic, right?”
Luo Jiani’s eyes lit up instantly, bubbling with curiosity. She secretly hoped she’d get a chance to see Renith’s magic someday—maybe even learn a trick or two!
“Of course. You think she’d wander around without real skills?”
Antina paused, almost getting swept up in Luo Jiani’s excitement.
“Alright, alright… no more dilly-dallying. Let’s get to work! If we get a complaint, we’ll be in real trouble.”
Antina was referring to the Angelica matter. Hearing this, Vistal and Luo Jiani quickly got moving.
About ten minutes later, Renith arrived unhurriedly at the school gate.
She didn’t rush inside. Instead, she mingled casually behind the students and teachers entering, planning to check out the scene of last night’s gunfight.
“How could such a thing happen… These gangs are like a cancer on society. They deserve to die!”
Someone in the crowd shouted angrily.
“Exactly! They’re parasites on the Empire. They need to be wiped out completely!”
Another voice chimed in, full of indignation.
This seemed to be the general sentiment among most people present. However, a small number of students, like Vistal, were beginning to question what Brand University taught.
The university’s professors had always insisted:
“Society is progressing in every way.”
Then why had a gunfight broken out?
Wasn’t it obvious that society was becoming more unstable?
A faint concentration of magic gathered in Renith’s eyes—Mage’s Eye combined with Appraisal. It was a sudden inspiration of hers.
Since both had detection functions, why not merge their strengths for something even better?
Though it felt a bit awkward to use, the result was noticeably more effective than plain Appraisal.
Renith narrowed her eyes slightly, scanning the area quickly. She keenly detected a mist-like energy around most of the students nearby—very similar to what she had sensed earlier on Vistal.
“Everyone, quiet, please!”
A booming voice suddenly rang out.
The noisy students fell silent almost instantly, their attention turning toward the speaker. Judging by his ID badge, he seemed to be a professor at Brand University.
“Many things happened last night. I know some of you have questions. We will address them in detail over the broadcast later. For now, return to the school and follow today’s schedule!”
The students began moving toward the campus in a bustling stream. Seizing the chance, Renith blended into the crowd and slipped through the gate unnoticed.
Security at the entrance had already opened the iron barricades. Using Light-Bend, Renith briefly took on the appearance of Bosliya. The guard gave her a cursory glance and waved her through.
Inside the campus, Renith was greeted by lush trees, blooming flowers, and Gothic architecture harmonizing with European-style gardens. Every corner exuded a strong academic atmosphere.
The grounds of Brand University were quite spacious, though they seemed small compared to the towering mage spire in the distance.
Many students with no classes strolled around in pairs, enjoying a leisurely walk.
Renith followed a couple from a distance, admiring the scenery while discreetly channeling magic to cautiously probe for anything unusual on campus.
Each time Light-Bend nearly drained her magic, Renith would retreat to a shady corner to recover before continuing.
“Want to come to the library with me? I still have a book to return—it’s almost overdue.”
A girl’s voice suggest came from nearby.
“Sure, let’s go.”
Another girl replied.
Renith looked over and saw two girls standing not far away.
Using Appraisal, Renith noticed both girls were enveloped in an energy aura similar to Vistal’s—especially the one holding the book. The white mist around her was so dense it seemed almost tangible.
Books, huh?
It must be connected to the library.
Following the girls past the academic building, Renith arrived at a central open area. There stood a massive, faceless statue facing the library entrance, its surface shrouded in a faint, wispy white mist.
When Renith’s magic probed deeper, a chilling sensation washed over her—a familiar mix of decay and vitality, exactly like the power that had taken her life thirty years ago.
It was all clear now. That guy was behind this!
There was undoubtedly a transmigrator here.
Renith slowly surveyed her surroundings. The white mist was drifting languidly toward the library.
A flicker of unease rose within her, but she suppressed it, took a deep breath, and walked toward the library.
At the library entrance sat a figure robed in white.
With one glance, Renith keenly sensed the distinct aura of a transmigrator emanating from him.
Renith tensed, warily glancing around. The area was bustling with people and noise—clearly not an ideal place for a confrontation.
The white-robed man inside didn’t seem to have noticed her. After a moment’s thought, Renith used Light-Bend to slip inside undetected.
However, the moment she stepped through the library doors, a thunderous explosion seemed to erupt in her mind.
“Believe…”
A distant yet immense voice echoed continuously in Renith’s head, striking like a heavy hammer. Dizziness washed over her, nearly breaking her Light-Bend concentration.
This is bad! Renith quickly turned and retreated from the library, hurrying to a shady spot opposite the building. Wiping cold sweat from her forehead, her face was slightly pale.
Looking back at the students entering the library, they were all chatting and laughing—nothing like her experience.
Was it targeting her specifically? Had she been discovered?
Renith’s gaze returned to the white-robed man. He remained seated calmly, showing no sign of awareness.
So the problem lay with Renith herself.
“Believe… That should be the word.”
Renith frowned slightly, trying to recall the muddy voice that had erupted in her mind.
Did it mean she had to believe in the owner of this statue to enter the library?
That was impossible.
“Maybe it’s not that complicated. My mental resistance is much higher than these students’, and I strengthened it after the Taojin incident.”
“Thinking differently… if resisting increases the pressure… would easing up a bit make it more bearable?”
Renith withdrew some of the magic shielding her mind and strode toward the library again.
This time, the voice still echoed in her head, but its intensity was noticeably weaker—no longer deafening.
So her guess was correct.
But this left Renith in a dilemma.
Even understanding the mechanism, she faced a difficult choice.
With her current mental strength, she couldn’t endure the voice’s relentless assault for long. Yet she couldn’t remove all the magical protection from her mind either; otherwise, under the voice’s influence, she’d eventually end up like these students.
“I won’t get past this barrier anytime soon… But at least I’ve found the root of the problem.”
Renith left the library, wandering around campus while pondering her next move.
Aside from the library and that enormous faceless statue, the campus atmosphere was actually quite pleasant.
Just as Renith was deep in thought, speakers around the campus crackled to life simultaneously.
“Ahem…”
The voice sounded like that of a middle-aged man, not too old.
“I am the principal of Mobius City, Weskylian.”
