After resting for a bit and regaining his strength, Jiang Nian stood up and took a look around.
The gear on the man who had ambushed him had been busted up in the fight, so it was no longer usable.
So he went back over to B-411, stripped off all his equipment, and put it on himself.
The moment he put on the night-vision goggles, Jiang Nian immediately noticed that the world in his right eye had been replaced by a sea of gray, occasionally flashing with white—those were animals moving around in the dark.
In the upper right corner, a line of numbers displayed his current coordinates.
“Thermal imaging night vision, huh?”
Jiang Nian rubbed his eyes and muttered. Though the blurry quality and color tones took some getting used to, it was still way better than fumbling around in pitch black.
Then, his gaze fell on the crossbow in B-411’s hand. He was just thinking about picking it up to use as a weapon when he realized that, in his final moments, B-411 had used the last of his strength to pull out a knife and slash the bowstring.
It hadn’t snapped completely, but it was obviously unusable now.
“Damn it, seriously? You had to make things harder for me even in death?”
Jiang Nian couldn’t help but curse under his breath.
He gave B-411’s corpse a hard kick, then walked over behind a nearby tree, picked up the phone that had fallen there, and stuffed it into his pocket.
Beep—
Just as Jiang Nian was gathering his things, a soft sound came through the earpiece.
Then, the Sunglasses Guy spoke up in an American accent: “Team B, Team B, how’s it going? I heard some strange noises from your area. Did you find the target? If not, come regroup immediately. The cops are almost here—we can’t stick around much longer. Over.”
Hearing this, Jiang Nian froze.
What the hell?
They’re just going to run?
Oh no, no way!
He was planning to take them out one by one and get his revenge. If they just slipped away like this, he probably wouldn’t be able to sleep for three days straight!
So Jiang Nian thought for a moment, his eyes landing on the dead B-411, and suddenly an idea struck him—borrowing a corpse to return the soul!
In “Yu Huatian’s” memories.
In the final battle with Zhao Huai’an, the one who died wasn’t him, but Feng Lidao, whom he had manipulated using a secret technique.
However, because that technique wasn’t perfect, Jiang Nian hadn’t acquired that skill when he unlocked Yu Huatian.
But that wasn’t the main point.
The point was that after Yu Huatian controlled Feng Lidao to die in his place, he disguised himself as Feng Lidao, fooled everyone, re-entered the palace, and killed Consort Wan.
Now here’s the key part.
Although Yu Huatian and Feng Lidao looked very similar, their voices were completely different.
Yu Huatian’s voice was steady and commanding.
Feng Lidao’s, on the other hand, was more street-smart and coarse.
So, to avoid being discovered, Yu Huatian had to change his voice to match Feng Lidao’s exactly.
And the way to change his voice was—
“Adjust internal energy to mimic the frequency.”
“Like this?”
Following the memory’s instructions and making some adjustments, Jiang Nian spoke again. His voice had already shifted from his original tone to B-411’s.
Though if you listened closely, there were still some issues.
But that couldn’t be helped.
After all, the only interaction Jiang Nian had with B-411 was when the guy shouted “Oh no!” right after his sneak attack—and he didn’t even finish the word before Jiang Nian took him out.
And right at that moment.
On the other end of the earpiece.
The Sunglasses Guy hadn’t received a response for a while and frowned.
“Team B, is something wrong over there? Come in if you copy. Repeat—come in if you copy!”
Hearing that, Jiang Nian didn’t dare delay any longer, worried that if he kept stalling they’d get suspicious. So he pressed the earpiece and spoke in that “B-411” voice: “Team B here, cough. I’ve found the target—my teammate and I engaged and took him down. Over.”
The moment those words came out, the Sunglasses Guy—who had been wondering why B-411’s voice sounded a bit off—widened his eyes in shock.
He brushed aside any concerns about the voice and pressed his earpiece in disbelief: “Team B, what did you say? You took down the target?”
Jiang Nian glanced at B-411’s body and replied:
“That’s right. While I was scouting, I heard sounds of a struggle. I rushed over and saw the target going after my teammate. He spotted me too and came at me. In the fight, I managed to put an arrow through his neck and pin him to a tree, but he still landed a punch on me. My arm’s dislocated now—I can’t get up. I need backup.”
The Sunglasses Guy didn’t suspect a thing and quickly asked: “Where are you now? We’ll head over right away!”
Jiang Nian gave him the coordinates from his night-vision display, then quietly ended the transmission.
The Sunglasses Guy didn’t think much of it.
All that was on his mind right now was one thing—Jiang Nian was dead, and he had finally avenged himself!
He was pumped, so he opened the all-channel frequency and announced:
“Attention everyone, attention! The target has been eliminated by Team B. Coordinates are [coordinates]. Follow me immediately for support!”
“Repeat—I said immediately!”
“Once we secure the body, we’re leaving Da Xia at once. Got it?”
As his words faded, a chorus of replies came through the earpiece: “Copy that!”
Then they all hurried toward the coordinates.
Hearing that, a grin spread across Jiang Nian’s face. He pulled the crossbow bolt out of the ambusher’s body and drove it straight into B-411’s neck, hanging him on the tree.
After all, if you’re putting on an act, you go all the way.
If you said he got pinned to a tree, then that’s where he stays.
Otherwise, when the Sunglasses Guy and the others showed up and saw the inconsistency, the whole ruse would fall apart.
After dealing with the body, Jiang Nian smeared some blood from the corpse on his own face, rubbed a bit more on B-411’s face, pocketed a few pebbles, and then lay down not far away, waiting patiently.
About a minute later.
Thud-thud-thud—
Hasty footsteps approached from afar.
The Sunglasses Guy’s voice followed: “B-411, where are you?”
Jiang Nian was startled for a second, then quickly figured out that “B-411” was probably the guy’s call sign. He propped himself up, putting on a weak and strained act, and said: “Over here! Hurry!”
The Sunglasses Guy rushed over.
But the first thing he did wasn’t to check on his teammate’s condition—it was to ask impatiently: “Where’s Jiang Nian?”
Jiang Nian pointed to a nearby tree: “Over there. Is everyone here?”
“Yeah, they’re all here. Don’t worry.”
The Sunglasses Guy replied.
Then he got ready to head over and examine “Jiang Nian’s” corpse, hoping to retrieve the detonator.
Sure, by now the cops might have already defused a lot of the bombs. But they’d planted so many that even if just some of them went off, they could still bring the whole building down.
He couldn’t meet the organization’s “Holy Lord” in the explosion—but with the mission complete, even if he went back, the organization wouldn’t hold it against him!
But he’d barely taken one step when his other leg was grabbed firmly by “B-411.”
“B-411’s” voice came again, with an odd tone: “Are you sure everyone’s here?”
The Sunglasses Guy was annoyed and snapped: “Yes, I’m sure. Sure and positive. Got it?”
With that, he yanked his leg free from “B-411’s” grip and strode toward the body.
Meanwhile, Team C’s support personnel came over to “B-411” to check his injuries, completely oblivious to the cold, sharp look in his eyes as he watched them.
“Seven, ten, fifteen…”
Counting the people present through the night-vision goggles,
Jiang Nian murmured under his breath.
And the more he counted, the more the brutal glint in his eyes deepened.
