Super Doctor - Chapter 66
Xu Ze—now self-dubbed “Mr. Trophy Husband”—glanced at the restaurant’s sign outside the car and raised an eyebrow. Well, someone’s clearly trying to put me in my place.
This was one of Star City’s most renowned French fine-dining establishments, infamous for its exorbitant prices. Never in his wildest dreams had Xu Ze imagined stepping foot here as a college student.
All thanks to Miss Sun here, he thought with a mix of amusement and resignation. He sighed quietly, noticing the faint blush on her cheeks as she clung to his arm.
Sun Lingfei, uncharacteristically flustered by her own boldness, turned to him. “You’re not… unhappy, are you?”
“Not at all,” Xu Ze chuckled. “Just marveling at how classy I’ve become as a sugar baby. Getting spoiled by the campus belle and treated to French cuisine? I must be living someone else’s life.”
His lazy smirk made her guilt flare. None of this was his problem—she’d dragged him into it. And judging by the restaurant choice, that leech of a suitor was clearly planning to intimidate her “boyfriend” into backing off.
Xu Ze, who worked tirelessly at the clinic and wore no-name brands, had probably never dined somewhere this lavish. If that jerk decided to humiliate him today…
Abruptly, she stopped walking.
Xu Ze blinked. “What’s wrong?”
“Let’s just go back.” Her voice was firm, and she tugged his hand.
He didn’t budge. “You don’t want to do this anymore?”
Sun Lingfei met his clear, questioning gaze and doubled down. She couldn’t let Xu Ze—always so unassuming—face potential humiliation because of her. That guy’s arrogance was legendary, and this venue was a blatant power play. She should’ve realized sooner.
“Yeah. I changed my mind.”
Reading her resolve, Xu Ze’s eyes softened with understanding. He gave a light laugh. “Come on. You can’t avoid this forever. Let’s settle it today.”
His confidence gave her pause. “But—”
“No ‘buts.’ Trust me, we’ll handle it.” His tone was easy, but his eyes held a steady reassurance.
Sun Lingfei bit her lip. “Xu Ze, he’s… vicious. As my ‘boyfriend,’ you’ll be his main target.”
The genuine concern in her voice warmed him. “Relax. It’ll be fine.”
Finally, she nodded. “Okay. But if he says anything ugly, ignore him.”
“Got it.” He grinned. “Though if we turned back now, imagine how smug he’d be.”
That drew a laugh from her, dissolving the tension.
…
Arm in arm, they entered the restaurant. A waiter guided them to their table, where a man sat stiffly. The moment he spotted their linked hands, his face darkened, and he remained seated.
Xu Ze, ever the gentleman, pulled out Sun Lingfei’s chair before settling beside her—only to freeze at the venomous snarl from across the table:
“Xu Ze.”
That voice—why did it sound so familiar?
He looked up.
And nearly choked.
Ah. So this is what they call “fate’s cruel joke.”
Rubbing his nose, Xu Ze forced a smile. “Dr. Zhao. Fancy meeting you here.”
Zhao Qilong—hair slicked back, face twitching—looked ready to combust. His disbelieving glare volleyed between Sun Lingfei and Xu Ze, lingering on their proximity. Never had he seen Sun Lingfei so comfortable with a man.
Then realization struck.
This insignificant intern—the same one who’d undermined him at the clinic—was her boyfriend?!
Rage simmered in his veins, but the setting demanded restraint. Breathe. You’re in a Michelin-starred restaurant. Do NOT make a scene.
Meanwhile, Sun Lingfei stared at Zhao Qilong’s apoplectic expression, baffled. He knew I was bringing someone. Why’s he acting like this?
Then it hit her.
He’d called Xu Ze by name. Xu Ze had called him Dr. Zhao.
Her head spun. They know each other?!
She whipped toward Xu Ze, only to find him equally stunned, wearing a wry grimace.
What the hell is going on? Their dynamic wasn’t just familiarity—it was outright hostility. If she had to label Zhao Qilong’s glare…
“Mortally offended” fit nicely.
“You two… know each other?” she finally blurted.
Xu Ze, now recovered, smirked under Zhao Qilong’s fiery stare. “Oh, we go way back.”
“Ah—” Her voice was faint with disbelief.
Across the table, Zhao Qilong’s smile was pure malice. “Know each other? Hah. This worthless intern and I are colleagues.”
Sun Lingfei’s jaw dropped. “Ah?!”
Her headache was officially cosmic.
