Super Doctor - Chapter 34
Xu Ze was, by nature, a simple and straightforward young man. Although his heart was racing, he didn’t let any inappropriate thoughts distract him. He pulled the thermometer from under Sun Lingfei’s arm and frowned at the reading: “39.6°C under the arm. No wonder she’s burning up like this. It seems pretty serious.”
Suppressing the rapid beating of his heart, Xu Ze grabbed his stethoscope and slipped it under Sun Lingfei’s shirt. As his hand brushed against the soft, smooth skin of her abdomen, his heart skipped another beat. He took a deep breath to steady himself, then carefully listened to her lungs. Her breathing was slightly rough, but there were no obvious abnormal sounds. Her heartbeat, however, was faster than normal due to the fever.
“It’s probably either a cold or tonsillitis,” Xu Ze thought, feeling a bit relieved. Still, to be cautious, he used the X-ray transparent function on her chest. The lenses of his glasses displayed an image of her lungs.
In the slightly dim view of her chest, the lung texture appeared slightly thickened, but there were no other abnormalities. Her heart size was normal…
But Xu Ze still wasn’t entirely at ease. Sun Lingfei was in a state of light unconsciousness, and he wasn’t sure if there were other infections or inflammations present. If there were serious infections, things could get dangerous.
Should he take her to the hospital for further tests? Xu Ze anxiously debated with himself. But going to the hospital would cost money, and he didn’t have much on hand. He wasn’t sure if he could afford it…
As he hesitated and worried, a playful voice echoed in his mind: “Hey… kid, playing the hero, huh? Can’t handle it?”
Hearing Little Knife’s teasing tone, Xu Ze’s eyes lit up. Little Knife’s tone suggested he had a solution. Xu Ze quickly responded, “Little Knife, do you have a way to help? Please, I’m really worried.”
“Ahem… it’s not my place to help you play the hero. Besides, this isn’t my problem, and I can’t break the rules, can I?” Little Knife chuckled, clearly enjoying Xu Ze’s desperation.
Seeing Little Knife act all high and mighty, Xu Ze was furious. He was worried sick, and here Little Knife was, messing around. He snapped, “Cut the crap! Are you going to help or not? If you’ve got something, spit it out, or I’m really going to lose it!”
“Oho… someone’s getting feisty. Alright, alright, I’ll help…” Seeing Xu Ze’s frustration, Little Knife decided not to push him further. He knew Xu Ze had a stubborn streak, and provoking him too much could lead to trouble. With a laugh, he said, “It’s simple. Do a blood test. Check the white blood cell count and neutrophil count. That’ll tell you how severe the infection or inflammation is.”
“A blood test?” Xu Ze’s eyes lit up. “Of course! That’s one of the most basic blood tests. The system must have it.”
He quickly asked, “Little Knife, how do I use it?”
“Ahem… although the blood test is a Level 1 permission and you can use it, you’re still a intern medic. You haven’t reached Level 1 yet. I can’t break the rules and teach you how to use it. I’ve already given you the biggest hint I can. The rest is up to you to figure out.” Little Knife’s tone was playful but firm. The system’s rules were clear: intern medics had to figure out Level 1 permissions on their own.
“…” Xu Ze was speechless. He knew Little Knife was right. He vaguely remembered something about this rule.
“Fine, I’ll figure it out myself. I don’t believe I can’t do it.” Xu Ze nodded determinedly.
He racked his brain, trying to recall how blood tests worked. From what he remembered, blood tests analyzed the number ofrelated cells in the blood to diagnose conditions. Most modern blood tests were done using automated analyzers. Did that mean he had to drop blood onto the lens of his glasses for analysis? That didn’t seem right…
Xu Ze scratched his head, feeling unsure. Just as he was starting to feel a headache from overthinking, a thought struck him: Before automated analyzers, people used microscopes to manually count cells. Surely his glasses were more advanced than a regular microscope. They must be capable of this!
Excited, he rushed into the injection room, grabbed a treatment tray, and took one of Sun Lingfei’s fingers. After disinfecting it with iodophor, he picked up a needle. Hesitating for a moment, he muttered, “Sun Lingfei, I’m doing this to help you. Don’t blame me…”
He gently pricked her finger with the needle. Sun Lingfei let out a low groan of pain but didn’t wake up, which made Xu Ze breathe a sigh of relief. Pricking a finger was more painful than a regular injection.
As Xu Ze gently squeezed her finger, a drop of bright red blood welled up from the puncture.
Looking at the drop of blood, Xu Ze commanded, “Activate the blood test scanner.”
With a “beep,” the system’s intelligent response program replied, “Are you requesting to activate the primary blood cell microscopic scan and analysis?”
Xu Ze’s heart leapt with joy. He was on the right track! He quickly responded, “Yes, start the analysis.”
“Beep… scan and analysis initiated…” As the system’s prompt sounded, the tiny drop of blood in Xu Ze’s left lens rapidly expanded, filling the lens with a red hue. Small granular cells began to appear.
Meanwhile, numbers started appearing on the right lens: “White blood cells: 12 (normal range: 4–10), Lymphocytes: 70% (normal range: 35%–50%), Neutrophils: 30% (normal range: 50%–65%), Hemoglobin: 135g (normal range: 110–135). Preliminary analysis conclusion: Likely a bacterial and viral co-infection (mild). Further blood analysis recommended. Requires Level 2 permission…”
Seeing these numbers, Xu Ze finally relaxed. It was indeed a mild infection, not too serious. He could treat her at the clinic without needing to send her to the hospital.
Having figured out the situation, Xu Ze didn’t waste any time. He hurried to the medicine preparation room and prepared the necessary medications. He drew up a dose of analgin into a syringe and grabbed a bottle of levofloxacin injection. Carrying the treatment tray, he returned to Sun Lingfei to administer the injections and IV.
The canvas belt on Sun Lingfei’s light blue jeans gave Xu Ze some trouble. Already nervous, he broke out in a light sweat as he struggled to undo it.
Fortunately, it was past 10 PM, and there was no one else around, so Xu Ze didn’t feel too awkward.
After some effort, he finally managed to undo her jeans. Feeling his heartbeat quicken, Xu Ze wiped the sweat from his forehead and took a deep breath. But he didn’t let himself get distracted. He reminded himself that he was here to save a life, not for any other reason. With that in mind, he continued what might have seemed like a somewhat inappropriate action.
Looking at her fair buttocks, Xu Ze didn’t let any inappropriate thoughts cross his mind. As a seasoned medic, he had seen all kinds of buttocks—male, female, old, young, dark, fair, plump, tender, beautiful, and perky. He had built up some resistance.
Now fully in his professional role, he disinfected the area with a cotton swab and, without hesitation, inserted the needle into her delicate skin.
Xu Ze’s technique was impeccable. The needle slid into her skin without disturbing Sun Lingfei’s slumber.
However, as he began to inject the medication, he hesitated for a moment. He used his left hand to gently press and massage the skin around the needle with his thumb and index finger, then slowly pushed the medication in with his right hand.
Analgin injections were more painful than most medications, and many patients would cry out in pain during the injection. Sun Lingfei was no exception. Even in her unconscious state, she began to let out low moans of discomfort.
Worried that she might be in too much pain, Xu Ze injected the medication slowly, taking about half a minute to finish.
After finishing the injection, he pulled her pants back up and took her left hand. After tying a tourniquet around her arm, he located a light blue vein on the back of her hand. Without hesitation, he disinfected the area and smoothly inserted the IV needle.
The slight pain didn’t rouse Sun Lingfei from her sleep. A faint streak of light red blood return in the IV tube confirmed that Xu Ze’s technique was still precise.
With the IV set up and the fever-reducing analgin administered, Xu Ze finally relaxed. He cleaned up the treatment tray and prepared more medications.
“Anti-inflammatory and antiviral medications are a must. And since she’s burning up like this, she’ll need plenty of fluids too.” Having decided on the treatment plan, Xu Ze glanced at the sleeping Sun Lingfei and sighed. He realized he’d have to stay by her side all night.
After finishing everything, Xu Ze remembered to call Luozi and let him know he wouldn’t be returning to the dorm that night.
Hearing that Xu Ze wasn’t coming back, Luozi’s mind immediately went to a inappropriate place. He teased Xu Ze for a while before finally hanging up.
By now, it was almost 11 PM. Fighting off sleep, Xu Ze turned on the TV in the injection room and kept an eye on the IV bag. After changing the bag three times, it was nearly midnight. He checked Sun Lingfei’s temperature again.
“37.8°C. Her fever’s come down. I can finally relax a bit.” Xu Ze sighed in relief. He covered Sun Lingfei with a clean blanket and hung another 500ml bag of glucose and vitamins, adjusting the drip rate.
Estimating that this bag would take at least two hours to finish, Xu Ze set an alarm on his phone and, exhausted, climbed onto a nearby recliner. Covering himself with a blanket, he quickly fell into a deep sleep.
As soon as he fell asleep, Little Knife pulled him into the virtual space. With a mischievous grin, Little Knife said, “Hah… not bad. You figured out the basic blood test. Playing the hero today, huh? You’ve hit the jackpot. That girl’s really something. Even in our genetically optimized era, she’d be considered a top-tier beauty.”
Xu Ze wasn’t in the mood for Little Knife’s teasing. He didn’t want to mention that Sun Lingfei had saved him once before, and this was his way of repaying the favor. It was an awkward situation, and if Little Knife found out, he’d never hear the end of it. He quickly changed the subject: “Let’s not talk about that. I’ve wasted enough time today. Let’s get started.”
“Alright… you set your alarm for two hours, which gives you about six hours in the virtual space. We should be able to cover more than half of the battlefield first aid material today.”
Xu Ze immersed himself in the virtual space. Compared to basic medicine, battlefield first aid was much more interesting. The variety of injuries in war—burns, stab wounds, blast injuries, radiation damage—was vast.
The treatment methods were equally diverse and complex, many of which Xu Ze had never even heard of. This novelty made the subject much more engaging, and Xu Ze found himself more interested in learning it than other subjects.
As time passed, the alarm on Xu Ze’s phone hadn’t gone off yet, but Sun Lingfei’s tightly closed eyes began to flutter.
Her long eyelashes fluttered as her beautiful eyes slowly opened. She frowned slightly, looking around in confusion before finally focusing on Xu Ze, who was sleeping nearby.
Looking at the somewhat familiar yet unfamiliar face, she finally remembered what had happened the day before. She had been burning up with fever and had no strength left. She had left her apartment, intending to go to the school clinic, but after walking a short distance, she felt dizzy and completely drained. She couldn’t go any further.
Struggling to reach the Huimin Clinic near the school, she had called out for a doctor before collapsing at the entrance. In her hazy state, she had seen a figure in white approaching before losing consciousness.
Sun Lingfei looked around, confirming that she was indeed in the clinic from the day before. But who was this guy next to her? He looked somewhat familiar. It seemed he had stayed by her side all night.
Looking at the IV in her hand, Sun Lingfei shook her head. She felt much better than the day before. Her head wasn’t as dizzy, and she had more strength. With some effort, she managed to sit up on the recliner.
Sitting up, she took a closer look at the young man sleeping nearby. Frowning, she tried to recall: “Who is this guy? He looks familiar… and quite handsome. But why don’t I remember him well? Is he a classmate from school?”
