Super Doctor - Chapter 212
Dr. Ji Xueping looked at the handsome young man standing before her, dressed in hospital scrubs with a calm smile on his face, and couldn’t help but freeze for a moment, a flicker of surprise flashing in her eyes. However, she quickly regained her composure. Since he was standing here, it meant the hospital must have agreed to let him continue his clinical placement here.
At that thought, a hint of delight appeared in Dr. Ji’s eyes. This student was very talented, and she had even tried to mitigate his responsibility back then, though she hadn’t been able to keep him in the placement. Now that Xu Ze had returned, she was naturally happy.
Dr. Ji nodded at Xu Ze and then smiled at the students in his group. “Today, I’ll take everyone to see a patient with chronic bronchitis. You need to combine the theoretical knowledge you learned at school with practice, and study and understand it carefully…”
With that, she led the group of about ten students into the ward. On the way, they ran into two nurses. The nurses, catching sight of the student who had performed the unauthorized tracheotomy the other day actually appearing in their department for placement again, were both momentarily stunned…
However, Xu Ze appeared completely at ease. He smiled at the two nurses and then followed Dr. Ji into the ward.
Dr. Ji was a very experienced teaching physician. She carefully explained the symptoms and signs of the bronchitis patient to the students, then personally taught them how to listen to and differentiate the rales in the patient’s lungs.
Faced with such a learning opportunity, all ten or so students in Xu Ze’s group, regardless of their personal interest, gathered around with their stethoscopes. Under Dr. Ji’s guidance, they leaned close to the patient’s chest, listening to the lung sounds.
Watching the students excitedly taking turns examining the patient with their stethoscopes, carefully listening to the subtle lung sounds and trying to distinguish the different rales, a smile appeared on Dr. Ji’s face. When she first entered the hospital, she had been just like them, unwilling to miss any learning opportunity.
However, she looked up and saw Xu Ze standing on the periphery, watching his classmates with a calm smile, showing no intention of joining in. A trace of surprise flashed in her eyes.
But upon second thought, she understood. This student, Xu Ze, was exceptionally outstanding. During the previous placements, he had been extremely familiar with physical examinations and patient interviews, like a seasoned doctor. Moreover, he had single-handedly performed a tracheotomy. It seemed he must have very rich clinical experience.
Although she didn’t know how a fourth-year student could have such extensive clinical experience, what she was teaching now were the most basic things. For him, they were probably unnecessary; he no longer needed her instruction.
Thinking this, Dr. Ji didn’t say anything. She just smiled and watched the other students bustling around the patient.
The afternoon placement passed quickly. With Dr. Ji’s tacit permission, Xu Ze remained quite leisurely, idling about until the placement ended.
Just as he was following Dr. Ji out of the ward, he heard her speak up ahead with surprise and respect, “Director Zhang, hello…”
“Director Zhang?” Xu Ze looked up and, sure enough, saw Old Man Zhang Lide standing in front of the doctor’s office, looking at him with a strange glint in his eyes.
Zhang Lide nodded to Dr. Ji and then looked at Xu Ze. “Xu Ze… come with me for a moment…”
Xu Ze pouted inwardly and, under the surprised and curious gazes of everyone, followed Zhang Lide somewhat reluctantly toward the head of department’s office for Respiratory Medicine.
Seeing Xu Ze standing ramrod straight before Qian Zhixun, appearing humble and respectful, Zhang Lide couldn’t help but let out a derisive snort. “Alright… stop pretending. Since when have you ever been respectful to me? Sit down yourself. Do you expect me to pour you tea?”
Hearing Zhang Lide’s words, Xu Ze relaxed. This old guy really wasn’t the vindictive type. After being outshone once by Xu Ze, he seemed to show him some consideration. Xu Ze promptly went along with it, sitting down on the nearby sofa with a dry laugh.
Beside them, Qian Zhixun, the head of Respiratory Medicine, was quite shocked to see his superior, the head of the Internal Medicine Department, Director Zhang, being so familiar, casual, and even somewhat polite with this mere placement student.
Although he had guessed Director Zhang must have some connection with Xu Ze when he allowed him to return, he hadn’t realized they were this close and their relationship so informal. It seemed Xu Ze didn’t feel the slightest bit of awe toward Director Zhang…
Zhang Lide looked at Qian Zhixun’s stunned face and gave a dry chuckle. “Zhixun, this kid is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. You taught him a good lesson last time, letting him know what’s what. Otherwise, who knows how high his tail would be wagging in our department…”
“Ah…” Hearing this, Qian Zhixun naturally understood that Zhang Lide and Xu Ze were quite familiar. If he had known earlier, he would have covered for Xu Ze that day. He forced a smile. “Well, Director… if I had known about the situation, I should have consulted you. It ended up with Student Xu Ze getting a demerit…”
“Heh heh… a demerit is good. As long as it’s not expulsion, I doubt this kid fears any demerit… Otherwise, he wouldn’t dare be so bold…” Zhang Lide recalled earlier when he had called Qu Zhiyuan in the Emergency Department and gave him quite an earful before the old fox finally revealed some details. This kid really was a monster, with solid skills.
Zhang Lide looked at Xu Ze and snorted coldly. “That old fox Qu Zhiyuan really had some nerve, putting you, an undergraduate who hasn’t even graduated, on rotation in the Emergency Department under a false pretense. Let me tell you, I agreed to let you continue your placement in our department, but you better tread carefully. Don’t act recklessly like last time, or don’t blame me for kicking you out again…”
Faced with Zhang Lide’s lecturing, Xu Ze smiled and nodded in agreement. That incident last time was a one-off; he had acted impulsively out of soft-heartedness… He probably wouldn’t be that unlucky again in the future.
Seeing Xu Ze nod, Zhang Lide said with satisfaction, “Hmm… from now on, behave yourself here. Don’t think this is the Emergency Department. I’m not that old fool Qu Zhiyuan to let you run wild… Just quietly go through the motions here… Listen to the teachers. Only reach out when they tell you to…”
“Alright, alright… I understand, Director Zhang. I’ll do exactly as you say… I absolutely won’t cause you any trouble…” Xu Ze replied with a grin.
“Good that you know… However, from now on during your placement, you can examine any patient you want here… If you have any questions, you can also consult Director Qian… As for those basic things, do them if you want, skip them if you don’t; it’s up to you. As long as you don’t cause trouble here, we’ll give you a placement evaluation in the end…” Zhang Lide lectured with a snort. “Understood?”
“Mhm, mhm… Director Zhang… in your eyes, am I just a troublemaker?” Hearing Zhang Lide constantly worry about him acting recklessly, Xu Ze couldn’t help but pout. “Don’t forget, last time, I actually helped you out. If it weren’t for me, that patient would have been gone on the spot…”
“Hmph… don’t get slick with me. Be careful, or if there’s another problem, don’t blame me…” Zhang Lide sneered.
Faced with Zhang Lide’s pressure, Xu Ze could only shrug. Who would go looking for trouble for no reason? It wasn’t like he had nothing better to do.
Seeing Xu Ze’s nonchalant expression made Zhang Lide grumble inwardly. He then looked at Qian Zhixun, who also seemed at a loss for words beside him. “Zhixun, from now on, this kid is in your hands. Let him see patients if he wants. You can listen to his opinions too… Consider them if they make sense, ignore him if they don’t…”
Hearing Zhang Lide’s words, Qian Zhixun wasn’t too surprised. Director Zhang’s attitude toward this student earlier had already indicated something. Although the situation seemed quite unusual, since Director Zhang had given the order, naturally he would follow it…
With Zhang Lide’s words, Xu Ze’s subsequent placement became much more leisurely. He showed up every day, but he no longer had to follow the teaching physician around with a large group of students.
One day, when it was time for placement again, Xu Ze brought his group to the Respiratory Medicine Department only to find Dr. Ji absent. A male doctor in the office, seeing the group of placement students arrive, stood up and addressed the confused students, “Dr. Ji is off today, so I’ll be leading your learning session today.”
Hearing they had a different doctor, everyone was momentarily surprised, but they didn’t have any objections. After all, the teaching assignments were arranged by the First Affiliated Hospital. Whoever they assigned was who they got; the students had no choice in the matter.
Originally, Xu Ze, as the group leader, knew the arrangements from the First Affiliated Hospital. The teaching physician wasn’t only Dr. Ji Xueping. While it was mostly her, when she wasn’t on duty, other doctors took over.
For placement students, the department head and deputy head didn’t do the teaching. When Dr. Ji Xueping wasn’t working, it fell to some of the regular physicians.
Apart from Dr. Ji and the two department heads, most of the other doctors in Respiratory Medicine were relatively young, generally in their thirties.
Besides Dr. Ji Xueping, the other two assigned as teaching physicians were male doctors in their thirties. They were quite willing to teach placement students. After all, there were a few girls in Xu Ze’s group, which made teaching somewhat more interesting than just regular work.
Both male doctors had recently been promoted to attending physicians. One was named Li Moli, the other Gu Lingbo. In terms of qualifications, though not as seasoned as Dr. Ji Xueping, anyone who could work at the First Affiliated Hospital had some skills. So, they taught quite adeptly, and the students learned a lot from them.
After being taught by these two male doctors a couple of times, everyone gradually became familiar with them. Basically, whoever was on duty would teach them each day.
However, one of them, Li Moli, was despised by many of the male students. This guy was especially nice to the female students, putting extra effort into teaching them. For the male students, he was quite casual. Moreover, many hands-on opportunities were given only to the girls. He often held the girls’ hands, taking small liberties while teaching them hands-on, which made the male students grit their teeth in anger.
But there was nothing they could do. He was the teaching physician, and he was from the hospital, not the university. They couldn’t do anything about it… Everyone could only swallow their anger.
Li Moli enjoyed teaching students, but he couldn’t stand the sight of a certain Xu, who idled around at the back every day. In his view, this Xu guy was just slacking off. Not only did he always linger at the back during placement, but he also listened half-heartedly, which was really annoying.
Although Director Qian had instructed that Xu Ze could learn if he wanted and be left alone if he didn’t, Li Moli naturally couldn’t stand such a privileged character, especially one who seemed quite popular with the female students.
Back when he was a placement student, he had never had it so easy. He always stayed close to the teaching physician, afraid of missing anything. But this kid in front of him was just too much… Hanging around at the back every day, not studying seriously, and during breaks, just chatting and joking with the female students…
Li Moli grew more and more irritated. One day, after finishing teaching a case and seeing Xu Ze again with that indifferent look, standing far away, Li Moli felt a surge of anger. He looked at Xu Ze and said, “Xu Ze… are you really here for placement? Just loafing around at the back every day. Do you think you know everything already?”
“Huh?” Hearing Li Moli’s scolding, Xu Ze was taken aback. He was just minding his own business. Who was he bothering?
Seeing Xu Ze being scolded, the other students in the group also froze, their expressions turning uncomfortable. They immediately gestured to Xu Ze, signaling him not to provoke the teaching physician. After all, Xu Ze had already received one demerit. If he provoked the teachers again and caused trouble, it wouldn’t be good.
Seeing the anger on Li Moli’s face, Xu Ze pouted inwardly. He wasn’t fond of this doctor either. He couldn’t be bothered to engage and just replied calmly with a faint smile, “Dr. Li… there are too many of us, and hands-on opportunities are limited. I’m just being considerate, letting the other students have more chances to practice… Is that not allowed?”
“You… you’re just making excuses!” Li Moli looked at the young man’s handsome face with its indifferent smile, and his anger flared even higher…
Seeing Li Moli fuming, Xu Ze raised an eyebrow slightly. He was here for placement and really didn’t want to provoke anyone. He was just hanging back; he wasn’t bothering anyone. Moreover, the leadership had said these basic things were optional for him… Why was this guy picking on him for no reason?
He then said calmly with a smile, “Dr. Li, I already know all this. So, I’m letting the other students stand at the front to learn more. Is that wrong?”
“You know everything?” Seeing Xu Ze’s dismissive expression, Li Moli’s anger grew even stronger. He glared at Xu Ze. “Looking at your attitude, you don’t even put me in your eyes. It seems you really think you know everything… Fine, then I’ll test you… If you can do it well, then I won’t bother you in the future!”
Hearing this, Xu Ze felt relieved. This Dr. Li was really a nuisance, insisting on bothering him and disturbing his peace. But he was the teaching physician, and what he said was technically correct; no one could fault him for it…
Since he said that, Xu Ze would let him test him… It wasn’t like he would be stumped by him? Better to get rid of him sooner, so he’d stop finding fault.
Xu Ze nodded and said with a calm smile, “Dr. Li, do you mean what you say? If I can do it, you won’t bother me anymore?”
“Right! Since you say you know everything, I’ll take you to see a patient. The goal of your placement is to learn how to conduct a relevant examination on a patient, diagnose the cause, and determine a treatment plan… So, you give the patient a detailed examination. If you can manage these points, I won’t bother you… Hmph… trying to challenge me…” Li Moli thought to himself with smug satisfaction, “If you can’t do it, from now on you have to study diligently with me. You do whatever I say… Understand?”
Having said that, he looked at Xu Ze, waiting to see his response. In a situation like this, even if this student had some foundation, he absolutely wouldn’t dare agree. As long as he found a slightly complicated patient, no matter how much you might have seen before, you’re still just a fourth-year student? Could you, Xu Ze, really figure it out? Unless you’re a complete fool…
Hearing Li Moli’s words, the students in Xu Ze’s group exchanged glances, and smiles appeared on their faces. They knew Xu Ze’s capabilities very well and secretly laughed, “Li Moli doesn’t know Xu Ze’s skills. Our group leader is still a fourth-year, but anyone who dares to look down on his medical abilities is asking for trouble… He might not be able to raise the dead, but he’s certainly better than most regular doctors… You, Li Moli, trying to find fault with our group leader on this point won’t be easy…”
Just as everyone expected, Xu Ze didn’t show the slightest hint of worry. He just looked at Li Moli with a smile and said, “Dr. Li… since that’s the case, it’s settled. If I do it, you mustn’t bother me anymore…”
“Bother you? Hmph… today I’ll let you know what’s what…” Li Moli chuckled darkly inside, “As long as you can’t do it, I’ll show you how I deal with you…”
“Alright, then it’s settled. I want to see just what skills you have to show off in our First Affiliated Hospital…” Li Moli sneered in agreement.
However, when Li Moli turned around, he saw many of the placement students looking at him with expressions that seemed to say they were waiting for a good show. His heart gave a slight “thump.”
“It seems this kid might have some real skills, otherwise why would these students look like this?” Li Moli snorted lightly to himself and thought with a cold laugh, “Even if you do have some foundation, so what? I’ll take you to see that patient… Let’s see what you can figure out… Heh heh…”
