Super Doctor - Chapter 202
Once Xu Ze finalized the anti-infection treatment plan, he naturally handed it over to Dr. Jiang and his team. After all, this was their area of expertise and didn’t require much of his own energy.
Dr. Jiang followed Xu Ze’s plan, administering Cefoperazone Sulbactam twice daily and Azithromycin once daily to Old Man Li for the anti-infection treatment. However, he was still somewhat anxious. Since these antibiotics weren’t considered particularly potent, he wasn’t entirely confident they could control Old Man Li’s infection.
But after three or four days, hearing the faint rales in Old Man Li’s lungs gradually disappear, and noticing that even the occasional slight cough had stopped, Dr. Jiang finally began to relax and grew even more impressed with Xu Ze.
Xu Ze had stayed at the base for nearly half a month. During this time, besides guiding Hu Qiang through some rehabilitative exercises and practicing his own energy circulation, he had also managed to gain some unexpected benefits.
As someone recognized as an expert by Lin Zhiyuan, Team Leader Li held Xu Ze in high esteem. So, one day while they were strolling around the base training ground, Team Leader Li curiously and smilingly asked Xu Ze if he would be willing to give some pointers on combat to his subordinates.
Watching the special forces members launch fierce attacks at each other in the arena, Xu Ze felt tempted. Apart from the encounter with those three thugs, he hadn’t really had a formal fight with anyone in real life.
Moreover, Xu Ze wanted to know his true capabilities, so he didn’t refuse. He smilingly agreed to the request to spar with the special forces members.
Team Leader Li was very pleased that Xu Ze agreed. He still remembered being deeply impressed and awed by Old Man Jiang from Taihang’s skills years ago. Mr. Lin, Old Man Jiang’s disciple, had only stayed here a few days back then, and there hadn’t been a chance to learn from him.
Recalling the formidable skills of the spy from last time, Team Leader Li still felt a lingering fear. Now, with Mr. Xu here, seeking his guidance would definitely be beneficial.
Hearing that Xu Ze was willing to spar with them, the special forces members were extremely excited. After all, Team Leader Li had constantly emphasized how powerful these unconventional experts were, and their previous encounter with that Japanese spy had taught them a hard lesson. So, they were thrilled at the chance to train with Xu Ze.
Since it was for training, Xu Ze didn’t stand on ceremony. He directly stepped onto the field and asked them to send two of their best fighters first.
He was quite confident about this. After advancing to the second level, Xiao Dao had already assessed that his current abilities were sufficient to take on two or three of the era’s top-tier special forces soldiers single-handedly.
Hearing that he wanted two of them, the special forces soldiers glanced at each other but didn’t hesitate. Remembering the precedent set by Mr. Lin previously, no one dared to underestimate this seemingly somewhat slender Mr. Xu. They promptly selected two members to step forward, intending to see just how skilled Xu Ze was.
The two selected special forces soldiers wore expressions of anticipation and excitement. They held Xu Ze’s medical skills in high esteem, but they weren’t sure about his actual fighting prowess, so they were very eager to find out.
However, their anticipation soon turned into frustration in front of Xu Ze. Both were among the top fighters in the special forces team, but after engaging Xu Ze, in less than two or three minutes, both found themselves grabbed by an arm or a leg and thrown out of the ring.
Xu Ze looked at his hands with satisfaction, thinking to himself that his skills had indeed improved greatly after this advancement. Last time, before his advancement, dealing with those three thugs had taken considerable effort. This time, facing two highly skilled special forces soldiers, it didn’t require much exertion.
Their movements now seemed rather slow in his eyes, and their strength seemed considerably less than his own. So, after just a few exchanges, Xu Ze spotted an opening, kicked one back, swiftly grabbed the other’s leg, and threw him out.
Dealing with the remaining one was even easier. Xu Ze fought speed with speed, and in just a few moves, he seized the other’s arm, gave a powerful twist, and flung him out of the ring as well.
Watching Xu Ze effortlessly throw both men out, the onlookers were stunned. They never expected someone with Xu Ze’s build to be so formidable.
Team Leader Li, however, wore an expression of confirmation, thinking, “This young Mr. Xu is indeed impressive. Although he might not match Old Man Jiang from back in the day, who could throw four or five people out, he’s still far superior to any of us.”
He then smiled and called for four more team members to spar with Xu Ze, thinking to himself, “If two aren’t enough, let’s try four… This time you shouldn’t find it so easy… It’ll also let these usually overconfident youngsters see that there’s always someone better.”
This time, the four special forces soldiers surrounding Xu Ze were much more cautious. They coordinated well, positioning themselves from four directions to attack Xu Ze simultaneously.
Facing four opponents did pose a significant challenge for Xu Ze. After all, all four were special forces experts, capable of handling most ordinary people easily. Now, with them teaming up against him, Xu Ze didn’t dare take it lightly.
However, Xu Ze’s reaction speed, strength, and agility were beyond what the four could match. Combined with the practical combat training Bond had given him, the four found themselves unable to gain the upper hand despite their coordinated attacks. Instead, they found their arms and legs going numb from the impact of Xu Ze’s powerful blocks and strikes.
Surrounded by the four, Xu Ze broke a slight sweat during the intense exchange. He remained focused, carefully looking for an opening. Finally, he spotted a chance, kicked one away, and as their formation broke, launched a rapid series of attacks. Seizing the opportunity created by their momentary disarray, and enduring two punches himself, he managed, after considerable effort, to secure a hard-fought victory.
Witnessing Xu Ze take on four of their comrades—who were known for their seamless teamwork—in a direct confrontation and still emerge victorious left the other special forces members utterly dumbfounded. They finally understood why their team leader had always emphasized the existence of such exceptionally skilled experts.
Seeing Xu Ze readily defeat four of his soldiers, Team Leader Li showed no displeasure. He looked at Xu Ze with a smile and said, “Mr. Xu… It seems you haven’t been too busy lately. How about helping me train these rascals? That way, if they encounter those high-level Japanese agents again in the future, they won’t be completely helpless.”
Hearing Team Leader Li’s words, Xu Ze thought for a moment and then nodded in agreement. After all, he didn’t have much else going on in Beijing currently. Sun Lingfei’s family was keeping a tight rein on her, making it hard for her to get out, so he had plenty of free time. Finding people to practice with seemed like a good idea. Sparring with Bond all the time wasn’t yielding anything new. The chance for real practical training was an opportunity too good to pass up.
As for conducting training, Xu Ze wasn’t worried. Bond had put him through some grueling sessions back then; he could just use those methods now. It didn’t seem too difficult.
So, Xu Ze smilingly agreed to spend a few hours each day training with the special forces team.
Delighted by Xu Ze’s agreement, Team Leader Li nodded excitedly, then barked at the group, “Mr. Xu has agreed to instruct your training! Are you happy about that?”
“YES!” Everyone, already thoroughly impressed by Xu Ze, responded loudly in unison.
Pleased with their response, Team Leader Li said, “Then what are you waiting for? Address him as ‘Instructor’!”
“Yes! Instructor Xu!” the crowd roared.
The following days became very fulfilling for Xu Ze. Each day, he would treat Old Man Li and Hu Qiang, then spend a few hours training the special forces soldiers. He applied the methods Bond had used on him with practiced ease, putting the soldiers through grueling drills that left them miserable.
The results, however, were evident. After nearly ten days of training, the soldiers gradually adapted to Xu Ze’s somewhat superhuman speed and strength. When sparring with him, they were no longer completely defenseless.
Xu Ze, too, didn’t waste this time and made significant progress. Through daily sparring with these soldiers, his movements became more fluid, his attacks and actions more controlled and instinctive. The improvement was clear.
Apart from training, Xu Ze also gradually reduced the frequency of Old Man Li’s electro-acupuncture sessions over these days. It went from twice daily, to once daily, then once every two days. Finally, a little over a week before the school term started, it was officially set at once every three days.
Even with electro-acupuncture only once every three days, the cleared lung meridian in the old man remained unobstructed. There was no recurrence of blockage despite the increased interval between treatments.
Seeing this, Xu Ze finally felt relieved. He could now return to Xing City with peace of mind. Switching to once a week in the future shouldn’t have too much impact.
Li Yue was naturally aware of Xu Ze’s plans. Although he was still somewhat concerned about Old Man Li’s condition, he couldn’t let that delay Xu Ze’s studies or consume his time indefinitely. However, he also understood that if Xu Ze could make such arrangements, he must be confident that it wouldn’t significantly affect Old Man Li’s health.
Old Man Li was also aware of Xu Ze’s plans. Dr. Jiang, however, felt uneasy. His loyalty to Old Man Li was absolute, so he privately sought out Xu Ze for a chat, even tentatively asking if Xu Ze might consider transferring to a university in Beijing.
Xu Ze understood Dr. Jiang’s implication perfectly. But he wasn’t sure if this was Old Man Li’s idea or Dr. Jiang’s own. Logically, such a matter shouldn’t come from Dr. Jiang, but Xu Ze also knew Old Man Li’s character—he would never put Xu Ze in an awkward position.
Although a Beijing university might be the nation’s top-ranked, Xu Ze had no intention of transferring specifically for that reason. Perhaps in the past, the idea might have held some appeal, but now, it held no sway over him.
So, hearing Dr. Jiang’s words, Xu Ze smiled and said, “Dr. Jiang, there’s no need to worry. Since I’ve made this arrangement, it won’t significantly impact Grandpa Li’s condition… As for my studies, I will complete them at Xing University.”
Hearing Xu Ze’s response, Dr. Jiang looked somewhat embarrassed and said, “Doctor Xu, as long as the Chairman’s illness isn’t a problem, then I won’t worry… My suggestion was really somewhat presumptuous…”
Xu Ze gently shook his head and smiled, “Dr. Jiang, I’m also reassured that Grandpa Li has a doctor like you caring for him. In the future, I will fly to Beijing once a week, so you can set your mind at ease.”
“That’s good… that’s good… It’s just going to trouble you!” Dr. Jiang said happily.
“It’s no trouble. As long as Grandpa Li’s condition remains stable, it’s fine by me…” Xu Ze replied with a smile.
With Old Man Li’s situation settled, Xu Ze conducted another examination of Hu Qiang. Hu Qiang had recovered remarkably well. At the very least, he could now take care of himself in daily life, reaching approximately the level of an average person. However, returning to his pre-injury condition would require at least another year or more of rehabilitative exercise.
Hearing that Xu Ze was returning to Xing City, Hu Qiang, Team Leader Li, and the others were quite reluctant to see him go. Xu Ze had lived at the base for over half a month and had instructed the special forces members for a considerable time, fostering strong bonds. So, the day before Xu Ze’s departure, the base held a banquet with several tables to see him off.
These soldiers, having trained in the army for years, were all skilled drinkers. They had suffered greatly under Xu Ze’s intense training regimen these past days, and now they planned to regain a bit of face at the dining table.
However, Xu Ze certainly wouldn’t give them that chance easily. He had come to appreciate these straightforward soldiers greatly. After returning to Xing City, opportunities to meet would likely be few. It wouldn’t be right if they didn’t even have a proper drink together before parting.
Besides, with his current alcohol tolerance, he really wasn’t afraid of anyone. Sitting at the head seat, he let the team members come forward one by one to challenge him, secretly feeling pleased. Dare to challenge the instructor? If I don’t put a few of you under the table, you won’t know what you’re up against…
The outcome was predictable. Our invincible classmate Xu Ze accepted almost every toast from the special forces members without refusal, earning the admiration of Team Leader Li and the others.
Team Leader Li witnessed his subordinates’ enthusiastic drinking spirit once or twice a year. But today, he wasn’t the target of their enthusiasm, so he watched contentedly from the sidelines.
Team Leader Li stood to the side, stroking his chin with a sly grin, looking quite pleased. He thought to himself, “This young Instructor Xu is skilled in fighting, and his medical expertise is top-notch, but drinking… he really shouldn’t compare with us rough soldiers. With these guys’ group attack tactics, even an elephant wouldn’t hold up… I remember getting knocked out by them once or twice every year for the past couple of years…”
“Young Instructor Xu… you’re definitely going down in front of us today… Otherwise, where would our Special Forces team’s pride be?”
Everyone seemed to be thinking along the same lines. Toasting became exceptionally enthusiastic, with everyone lining up, holding glasses capable of holding three liang (approx. 150ml) of baijiu, carrying liquor bottles, and passing by Xu Ze.
Xu Ze sat there, steady as a rock, smiling as he watched the soldiers coming to toast him…
“Instructor Xu… You saved Hu Qiang and have been training us for so long. Today, I must propose a toast to you…” A Captain Gan, holding his glass, looked at Xu Ze with great fervor, waiting for him to drink.
He had been waiting for this day. Suffering through Xu Ze’s grueling training sessions these past days, yet unable to beat the young instructor in a fight, he had come prepared today to turn the tables.
Xu Ze smiled, glanced at the long line behind Captain Gan, and didn’t refuse. Lightly laughing, he picked up the glass in front of him, stood up, clinked glasses with the captain, patted him on the shoulder, and said, “Of course, we’ll drink… Old Gan… Everyone has worked hard these days. Keep up the good effort. If you encounter those ‘little devils’ again in the future, don’t disgrace our China…”
“Don’t worry, Instructor Xu… Our entire Special Forces team will never disgrace you. With the techniques you’ve taught us, if we meet those ‘little devils’ again, we guarantee not a single one will escape…” Mentioning this, Captain Gan was absolutely confident. Instructor Xu’s ten-day intensive training hadn’t been for nothing. He stated this solemnly.
Xu Ze nodded with satisfaction. He had held nothing back these ten days, teaching them everything he could—all the methods he learned from Bond for dealing with certain special individuals and creatures…
Without further hesitation, he laughed heartily and said, “Good… Bottoms up!” He threw his head back, and the three liang of white liquor poured down his throat, not a drop left.
Inspired by Xu Ze’s boldness, Captain Gan wasn’t to be outdone. He also threw his head back and downed the drink. After finishing, he held Xu Ze’s hand reluctantly and said, “Instructor Xu… Although you’re younger than me… I, Old Gan, admire you… Whether it’s medical skills, combat, or even drinking, you’re first-rate, no worse than any of us…”
After Captain Gan finished his toast, and once Xu Ze had taken a couple of bites of food, the next person in line stepped up. Xu Ze smiled and accepted without refusal. After a few words of encouragement, he threw his head back and drank again. Team Leader Li, who had been feeling quite smug watching from the side, was astonished. This wasn’t low-alcohol liquor; it was over 60% proof Red Star Erguotou…
This young Instructor Xu had downed six liang (approx. 300ml) without even pausing… Could it be that he’s a heavyweight drinker too?
Team Leader Li watched in amazement as the young instructor downed glass after glass. After downing five or six glasses in a row without even changing his expression, he gradually realized his guess was probably correct…
The soldiers waiting in line to toast, seeing Xu Ze accept without hesitation, drinking one glass after another, grew even more excited. They muttered to themselves, There are over ten of us. Even if Instructor Xu goes through the whole line, he’ll have to get drunk. We must get him drunk today, otherwise, with so many of us in the Special Forces team, where would our pride be?
However, by the end, they realized they were wrong, and very wrong at that. Instructor Xu wasn’t just skilled in medicine and fighting; his drinking capacity… was also top-tier…
Four jin (approx. 2 kilograms) of over-60-proof Erguotou only made his face considerably redder, but he still hadn’t collapsed… Meanwhile, several of the special forces soldiers around him had already passed out…
