Super Doctor - Chapter 154
Under the bewildered gaze of Patient Old Wang, the group of doctors and hospital leaders stormed into Room 38 for the third time in an hour, once again surrounding his bed.
Seeing the stunned expression on the patient’s face, Director Qu cleared his throat awkwardly and forced a smile. “Ahem… Old Wang… Well… We, uh… just had another consultation, and… Dr. Xu here has come up with a new treatment method for you. It should… uh… be very effective. So, we’re here to let Dr. Xu give it a try. Don’t be nervous…”
The others wiped invisible sweat as they listened to Director Qu’s stumbling explanation.
Fortunately, the patient seemed to understand despite the incoherence. The moment he heard that Dr. Xu had devised a new treatment, his face lit up with excitement. “If it’s Dr. Xu’s idea, then go ahead! I trust him completely!”
He craned his neck, searching until he spotted Xu Ze behind the crowd, then eagerly waved him over. “Dr. Xu, hurry! Try it out! Your methods always work!”
The others exchanged glances. Clearly, Xu Ze had earned this patient’s absolute trust.
Xu Ze squeezed through the crowd, followed by a nurse carrying a tray. Everyone peered curiously at its contents—just a small bottle of alcohol and a pack of cotton swabs.
What exactly is he planning?
Xu Ze didn’t keep them guessing for long. Smiling, he said, “Old Wang, lie still. I’m going to give you a few acupuncture needles. It’ll be quick and barely hurt.”
“Go ahead, Dr. Xu! I can take it if it helps!” The patient grinned eagerly.
Xu Ze nodded, then pulled out a slender case of silver needles from his pocket.
The room fell silent. Every doctor present had trained in Western medicine, and Xingda First Affiliated rarely used traditional Chinese treatments—acupuncture was practically unheard of outside the token TCM department.
Director Zhang Lide and the other internists shot questioning looks at Director Qu, who merely shrugged, signaling that this wasn’t his doing.
Even Dean Ou and Vice-Dean Qian stared in astonishment at the needles in Xu Ze’s hand. Acupuncture? Could it really produce the miraculous results he promised?
No one dared underestimate Xu Ze now—even Zhang Lide watched intently, waiting for the outcome.
Xu Ze carefully examined the patient’s legs, then had him remove his shirt and lie face-down. After disinfecting several acupoints with alcohol swabs, he selected five needles, sterilized them, and inserted them swiftly into Dazhui (GV14), Guanyuan (CV4), Tiantu (CV22), Zusanli (ST36), and Sanyinjiao (SP6).
Then, with a flick of his fingers, he sent faint pulses of bioelectric energy vibrating through the needles.
The subtle currents traveled along the needles, stimulating the patient’s partially paralyzed neurons. Slowly, the dormant nerves began to reactivate, regaining some function.
To avoid shocking the observers or revealing his secret, Xu Ze had deliberately limited the energy to a minimal dose—just enough to achieve the desired effect.
As the vibrations faded, Xu Ze removed the needles, sterilized them again, and returned them to their case.
“Alright, Old Wang, turn back over.”
The patient rolled onto his back, his eyes widening slightly at the unfamiliar sensation.
Xu Ze smiled. “Now, try lifting your legs.”
“Right now?” The patient blinked.
“Right now.”
With a deep breath, the patient concentrated—and his right foot slowly rose from the bed.
“I—I did it! I lifted it!” he gasped, voice trembling with disbelief.
The room erupted in stunned silence.
Director Qu’s jaw dropped as the patient’s foot hovered nearly a foot above the mattress. The other doctors stood frozen, watching as the man alternated lifting each leg, laughing in exhilaration.
His family members burst into tears of joy—just hours ago, he could barely twitch his toes.
Dean Ou clapped his hands in amazement. “It worked! So quickly!”
Zhang Lide, however, looked as if he’d seen a ghost. He leaned closer, then closer still, as if doubting his own eyes. Finally, he whirled toward Xu Ze.
“H-How did you do that?!”
Xu Ze raised an eyebrow. “With acupuncture. You watched the whole thing.”
“But—but how?!” Zhang Lide sputtered, pointing at the patient’s still-moving legs. “How could needles make this happen?!”
Xu Ze shrugged. “Stimulating the right meridians restores nerve function. That’s all.”
Zhang Lide’s mind reeled. This can’t be real. Acupuncture isn’t this powerful!
Dean Ou, beaming, clapped his hands again. “Alright, everyone, let’s return to the office. We shouldn’t disturb the patient further.”
Reluctantly, the group filed out, though Zhang Lide cast one last disbelieving glance at the patient’s miraculously mobile legs before following.
Once everyone had reassembled in the office, Dean Ou’s voice rang with enthusiasm. “Let’s give Dr. Xu another round of applause! He’s pioneered a groundbreaking new treatment for Guillain-Barré syndrome—one with immediate, undeniable results!”
This time, the applause was thunderous—even the internists clapped without reservation, their earlier reluctance replaced by awe.
After letting the cheers continue for a moment, Dean Ou raised a hand for silence. “The Emergency Department’s unity is truly remarkable. This enthusiasm speaks volumes!”
Director Qu, grinning from ear to ear, waved off the praise modestly.
Dean Ou nodded. “Now that Dr. Xu has proven his method’s efficacy, I’m confident the Emergency Department can cure this patient within five days and compile a complete research package.” He scanned the room. “Unless there are objections, I officially reaffirm this project’s assignment to the Emergency Department.”
Silence.
Dean Ou turned to Zhang Lide. “Director Zhang?”
Zhang Lide took a deep breath, then met Xu Ze’s eyes. “No objections. If Dr. Xu can achieve this, no one in this hospital is more qualified than the Emergency Department.” He paused, then added sincerely, “And Dr. Xu—when your rotation here ends, my department’s doors will always be open to you.”
