Super Doctor - Chapter 117
Xu Ze was deep in thought when the patient’s family returned with the prescribed medication. He quickly took it and examined the contents—omeprazole for gastric protection, the pain relievers 6542 and rotundine… Zhao Qilong had prescribed drugs to treat gastritis…
At that moment, Xu Ze didn’t immediately hand the medicine to Nurse Luo. Instead, he gently placed his right hand on the elderly woman’s wrist, as if taking her pulse. But in his mind, he issued a command: “Activate ECG.”
Following his order, the ring on his right finger emitted a faint electrical pulse, directed straight toward the old woman’s heart.
Soon, a series of ECG waveforms appeared on the left lens of his glasses. As Xu Ze studied the lines, his expression darkened—several leads showed a distinct upward curve, forming a dome-like pattern.
Then, text appeared on the right lens: *”ST-segment elevation exceeding 0.4mV in leads V1, V2, V3. High probability of myocardial infarction.”*
“A heart attack… It really is a heart attack…” Xu Ze took a quiet breath, silently wondering whether this was luck for the old woman, for Zhao Qilong, or even for the clinic itself. If he hadn’t noticed something was wrong and Zhao’s prescribed treatment had been administered, the woman could have died suddenly at any moment.
Holding the medication but not yet handing it to Nurse Luo, he smiled at the family and said, “Just a moment longer. We should do an ECG to rule out any other issues—better to be safe.”
“Another test? Didn’t the doctor already examine her?” The family member frowned, clearly displeased.
“The doctor?” Xu Ze paused, then chuckled. “That was Dr. Zhao. I’m Dr. Xu.”
“Huh? That wasn’t Dr. Xu? You are?” The family member eyed Xu Ze skeptically. This young man, barely in his early twenties, was the real Dr. Xu?
Nurse Luo, who had been waiting for the medication, noticed Xu Ze’s hesitation and sensed something was wrong. Her expression changed as she quickly confirmed, “This is Dr. Xu. The other one was Dr. Zhao.”
“Oh… So you’re Dr. Xu! You’re so young… I never would’ve guessed.” The middle-aged man laughed heartily. “I’ve heard about your reputation. Alright, what other tests do you think we need?”
Seeing the family’s agreement, Xu Ze nodded. “Just an ECG. Elderly patients often have heart issues, so it’s best to check.” He then hurried to fetch the ECG machine from the examination room.
Meanwhile, Zhao Qilong, bored in the consultation room, saw Xu Ze carrying the ECG machine with a grim expression—without even consulting him. With Old Zhang absent, he was in charge. The recent frustrations boiled over, and he sneered coldly, “Xu Ze, what are you doing with that? That’s the newest machine—don’t drop it.”
Xu Ze frowned. Though he didn’t yet have the ECG printout to prove his point, he decided to warn Zhao anyway. If the family later caused trouble, at least they wouldn’t be caught off guard.
Lowering his voice, he said, “That patient might not have gastritis. It’s likely a myocardial infarction.”
“What? Are you joking?” Zhao Qilong’s face twisted with anger. He wasn’t concerned—just furious. Pointing at Xu Ze, he snapped, “What are you implying? Questioning my diagnosis? Are you trying to pick a fight?”
“Dr. Zhao, conduct yourself professionally.” Xu Ze’s gaze turned icy. “Have you forgotten the oath of a physician? A doctor must be meticulous, thorough in examinations, and consider every possibility for the patient’s sake.”
“You—you dare lecture me?” Zhao Qilong let out a mocking laugh. He was utterly confident in his diagnosis—the symptoms and signs all pointed to gastritis. Xu Ze’s acupuncture for kidney stones had shocked him before, but that was Chinese medicine, not Western diagnostics. Smirking, he hissed, “You think you’re better than me? You haven’t even graduated from medical school. What gives you the right to question me?”
Seeing Zhao Qilong’s stubbornness and petty grudge, Xu Ze scoffed and ignored him, carrying the ECG machine away.
This dismissal enraged Zhao Qilong. As someone who had always been praised as a prodigy, no one except his father and teachers had ever dared speak to him like this. Humiliated, he stormed after Xu Ze, shouting, “Xu Ze, what’s your problem? Who gave you the right to interfere with my patient?”
Xu Ze paid him no mind, calmly attaching the ECG leads to the old woman.
When Zhao Qilong reached out to yank the wires away, the family member angrily blocked him. By now, they understood—the young Dr. Xu was concerned and wanted to run an ECG for safety, while the first doctor was furious at the interference.
Dr. Xu, prioritizing the patient’s well-being, was standing firm despite the senior doctor’s objections.
“What are you doing?” the family member barked. “What’s it to you if Dr. Xu runs an ECG on my mother?”
The sharp rebuke forced Zhao Qilong to back down. Suppressing his fury, he glared at Xu Ze. “Fine. Go ahead. Let’s see what you find.”
Xu Ze remained silent. He had already confirmed the heart attack through the super system’s ECG. This physical printout was just for the family’s sake—to convince them to rush the patient to the hospital.
“Whirr…” The machine steadily printed the ECG strip. The waveforms appeared clearly, the telltale elevated ST segments undeniable.
Zhao Qilong’s sneer died in his throat. His face drained of color.
Seeing his reaction, the family member grew anxious. “Dr. Xu… is there a problem?”
Xu Ze nodded gravely and instructed Nurse Luo, “Prepare an IV—5% glucose with 10mg isosorbide mononitrate and 7ml potassium.”
Nurse Luo hurried off to mix the solution.
Xu Ze then turned to the family. “Come with me. We need to discuss her condition.”
“Alright…” The man’s heart sank as he followed Xu Ze to the consultation room, leaving Zhao Qilong pale and shaken in the injection room. He knew he was in deep trouble—he could only hope the family wouldn’t come after him.
Worse, if the patient deteriorated here, it wouldn’t just be trouble—it’d be a disaster.
After Xu Ze explained the severity of the situation, the family member’s face darkened. But he followed Xu Ze’s advice and called for an ambulance.
Just then, Old Zhang returned. Learning what had happened, his expression turned stormy. He shot Zhao Qilong a cold glare—today, the clinic’s reputation had nearly been ruined.
Xu Ze arranged for the unused medication to be refunded. The family, though upset, was too preoccupied to confront Zhao Qilong, anxiously waiting for the ambulance.
When it arrived, Xu Ze helped load the patient. The family member shook his hand gratefully. “Dr. Xu, we owe you everything.”
Xu Ze nodded. “Just doing my job. I’m sorry about what happened earlier.”
“It’s alright… As long as she’s safe.” With that, the family left.
Once the ambulance was gone, Old Zhang studied Zhao Qilong’s ashamed expression and sighed. “Dr. Zhao… Your mentor, Dr. Sun, is an old friend. He sent you here for guidance, and I’ve tried to teach you. But you must put in the effort too. Today could’ve ended very badly. If it had… even your teacher wouldn’t be able to face me.”
Zhao Qilong flushed with humiliation but nodded silently—he knew how close he’d come to catastrophe.
Just as Old Zhang was about to continue, three men in uniform entered. The leader eyed Old Zhang coldly. “Are you Zhang Xunbo?”
Old Zhang smiled politely. “Yes, that’s me. How can I help you? Please, have a seat—some tea?”
Ignoring the courtesy, the man snapped, “We’re from the Health Bureau’s inspection division. We’ve received reports of unlicensed medical practice here. We’re here to investigate.”
Hearing this, Xu Ze smiled faintly. It seemed the Zhang family had finally grown tired of his peaceful days—they were coming for him.
