Reborn in the 80s: My Whole Family Secretly Hears My Thoughts and Goes Wild with Success! - Chapter 28
Having grown up together and been brothers for years, Yue Mingyuan and Ling Hao understood each other well.
Noticing the change in Ling Hao’s expression, Yue Mingyuan walked him out of the hospital room and asked directly, “What’s wrong?”
Ling Hao didn’t mention hearing Ya Ya’s inner thoughts—he believed no one else could hear them, only him, the “chosen one.”
If Yue Mingyuan found out, his competitive nature would kick in, and he’d probably keep Ling Hao away from Ya Ya out of jealousy. To avoid that, Ling Hao had to keep this secret at all costs.
However, he didn’t hide his concerns about their informant. The two were in the same squad, serving as captain and deputy captain. Yue Mingyuan, as the captain, was aware of the operation scheduled for the following week.
If not for Shen Zhiqiu’s premature delivery, Yue Mingyuan would have led the mission. But since he was on leave, Ling Hao took over.
“Here’s what you should do…” Yue Mingyuan thought for a few seconds before whispering his suggestion.
Ling Hao’s eyes lit up. He gave Yue Mingyuan a thumbs-up and grinned. “No wonder they call you ‘Fox Wolf.’”
“Be careful out there. Contact me the second you return,” Yue Mingyuan reminded him.
“Don’t worry, I’ll come back in one piece! Just focus on taking care of Zhiqiu and Ya Ya.”
“Undefeatable in battle!”
“Unstoppable in conquest!”
Their fists met as they shouted their squad’s motto.
When Yue Mingyuan returned to the room, Ya Ya was already asleep. The little one clutched a peace pendant in her left hand and a golden locket in her right, giggling softly in her dreams.
Yue Mingyuan and Shen Zhiqiu exchanged a smile, but she quickly averted her gaze, awkwardly changing the subject. “What did Aunt Zhao cook? It smells amazing.”
“Chicken noodle soup.”
He opened the thermos, served her a bowl of noodles with a bit of broth, and pushed it toward her. “No green onions—just some cilantro.”
After spending so much time together, Shen Zhiqiu was certain it wasn’t a coincidence. Yue Mingyuan genuinely knew her preferences—and not only that, he accommodated them in small, thoughtful ways, making her feel incredibly at ease.
It was this very comfort that made her gradually fall for his tenderness.
“Thank you.”
She pinched her thigh under the blanket, forcing herself to stay rational. Don’t get lost in these little gestures.
He has someone he loves. He has someone he loves. He has someone he loves.
Repeating it three times in her mind didn’t help. Instead, her chest tightened, and tears welled up uncontrollably.
“Zhi… Zhiqiu?!”
Yue Mingyuan panicked, hastily grabbing a towel. He crouched beside her, gently wiping her tears. “Did Chen Can say something to you earlier?”
His mind raced through possibilities, but no matter how he looked at it, Chen Can had to be the cause. Only he could make Zhiqiu cry like this.
“He just got here when you came in. All he asked was whether my premature delivery had anything to do with Shen Liya.”
Shen Zhiqiu believed in honesty between spouses, especially regarding interactions with the opposite sex. She hadn’t expected Chen Can to visit, nor had she anticipated Yue Mingyuan returning right after.
She didn’t want any misunderstandings, so she explained clearly—yet he still seemed upset.
A cold glint flashed in Yue Mingyuan’s eyes. I should’ve hit him harder.
What was Chen Can trying to do? Was he here to interrogate Zhiqiu and defend Shen Liya? Or was he threatening her to drop the matter for the sake of the Chen family’s reputation?
Either way, Chen Can was a bastard.
“Zhiqiu, I support you.”
He tentatively reached for her hand, relieved when she didn’t pull away. “Finding out who hurt you and Ya Ya is non-negotiable. No matter who tries to stop you, don’t let it get to you. Do what you think is right.”
He added, “And whatever you want to do in the future, I’ll back you up.”
Shen Zhiqiu almost understood his meaning—but not entirely. She asked bluntly, “What if I only want Ya Ya as my child? What if I want to keep dancing and refuse to give it up? Would you agree to that?”
“Yes.”
Without hesitation, his answer was firm—clearly, he’d already thought this through.
He stood, rinsed the towel, soaked it in warm water, and wrung it out. Returning, he had her lean back against the headboard as he gently pressed the warm cloth to her eyes.
“Even if the country didn’t have the one-child policy, I’d still say one child is enough.”
He truly couldn’t bear to see her suffer through pregnancy and childbirth again. In fact, he wouldn’t have minded if they’d never had children at all.
“As for dancing—of course you should continue. It’s your career, one of your passions. I have no right to take that away from you.”
When enough time had passed, he removed the towel. Their eyes met, and Shen Zhiqiu’s heart pounded so loudly she was sure he could hear it.
Yue Mingyuan wasn’t faring much better. It took every ounce of his self-control to keep his expression neutral.
“Let’s eat. The noodles will get cold.”
“Okay.”
After the meal, Yue Mingyuan handed her the file folder from Qin Liping.
“Lu Changcun is cautious—he doesn’t leave many traces. But he’s not flawless. It’ll just take time to gather enough evidence to expose him.”
Shen Zhiqiu knew it wouldn’t be easy, but time wasn’t on Ye Jiawen’s side, which worried her.
“What about Jiawen?”
“Zhiqiu, what if we approach it differently? Jiawen wants Lu Changcun as her advisor, but what if he refuses?”
If one party was uncooperative, they could focus on the other.
And Lu Changcun would be far easier to handle.
Shen Zhiqiu’s eyes brightened. Why didn’t I think of that?
A few days later, Ye Jiawen visited, her usual energy gone. She slumped into the chair beside Shen Zhiqiu with a heavy sigh.
“Professor Lu flat-out said he can’t take me on as his student—but he wouldn’t explain why.”
“Zhiqiu, do you think it’s because I’m not good enough… or because I’m a woman?”
