Reborn in the 80s: My Whole Family Secretly Hears My Thoughts and Goes Wild with Success! - Chapter 158
Ye Jiawu dabbed a little of the balm on one of the bites. The itching and pain immediately subsided quite a bit. “It works, it really works.”
“Then you keep this box.” Dong Xiaomei handed the paper with the written formula to Ye Jiawu. “They’re all common herbs. You can get them prepared at any traditional Chinese medicine pharmacy.”
“Xiaomei, thank you.”
“What’s to thank? You’re Sister Zhiqiu’s cousin. When you think about it, we’re practically family.”
“Do you like candy?” Ye Jiawu asked Dong Xiaomei.
Dong Xiaomei nodded. “I do.”
Lu Shuangshuang chimed in from the side: “She also loves chocolate.”
“Wait a moment.” Ye Jiawu went back to his room and came out with half a bag of candy and half a bag of chocolate, stuffing them all into Dong Xiaomei’s arms. “This is all I have left right now. Next time I’ll go buy some specifically for you.”
“You’re sure? All of this is for me?”
Ye Jiawu nodded emphatically. Dong Xiaomei’s eyes curved into happy crescents. “Then I won’t stand on ceremony with you; I’ll accept it all.”
As she spoke, she took out a piece of candy, unwrapped it, put it in her mouth, her face radiating pure happiness.
“Xiaomei, give me one. Seeing you enjoy it so much makes me want one too.” Lu Shuangshuang reached her hand out to Dong Xiaomei.
Dong Xiaomei placed a piece in Lu Shuangshuang’s hand, then tossed one to Ye Jiawu. “Xiao Wu, you have one too.”
“Jiusi, here.” Lu Shuangshuang casually handed her piece to Huo Jiusi, then asked Dong Xiaomei for another one.
Huo Jiusi looked at the candy in his hand, then at Ya Ya, whose eyes were sparkling brightly. He tore the wrapper open, pinched the candy with the wrapper, and held it to Ya Ya’s lips.
Ya Ya stuck out her little tongue and licked it a few times, laughing happily. [Little Demon, how did you know I wanted candy?]
Huo Jiusi smiled without speaking and continued holding the candy for Ya Ya to lick.
Ya Ya licked it a few more times, then waved her hand to indicate she didn’t want anymore. Huo Jiusi directly put it into his own mouth.
Ya Ya’s eyes went wide. [Little Demon, I licked that! What are you doing!]
“Don’t want to waste it.”
[It’s not about wasting! It’s unhygienic!]
“I don’t mind.”
Ya Ya: […] A bit annoyed.
Huo Jiusi laughed and poked Ya Ya’s puffed-out little cheek. “I’m just teasing you.”
[Hmph~]
“Want some ice cream?”
[Yes.]
“Wait here.”
Huo Jiusi went and got an ice cream bar, again letting Ya Ya lick it first.
Ya Ya licked it a few times and wanted more, but Huo Jiusi pulled it back and started taking small bites himself. “You can’t have any more. It’s too cold. I’ll feed you some watermelon juice later.”
[There’s soda! Who wants watermelon juice? This kitty wants soda!]
“Okay.”
Huo Jiusi was exceptionally patient with Ya Ya. Basically, whenever he was around, no one else needed to intervene with her care.
And Ya Ya had also gotten used to Huo Jiusi’s attentiveness. He could understand her thoughts and take care of her perfectly.
After the meal, Dong Xiaomei spoke up: “Sister, I’m still worried. I want to go home and check on Grandpa.”
She still had to return to the team in the evening; time was tight, and she hadn’t originally planned to go back. But thinking of her grandfather being home alone made her feel terribly upset.
Ye Zhiqiu took Dong Xiaomei’s hand. “I’ll have Xiao Wu take you. That way I’ll feel better about it.”
Dong Xiaomei looked at Ye Jiawu. Ye Jiawu stood up readily. “Let’s go.”
The sun was particularly fierce at that moment. Dong Xiaomei used her straw hat to fan Ye Jiawu. “Xiao Wu, I’m really troubling you.”
“What trouble? Didn’t you say we’re family?”
Ye Jiawu reached back and grabbed the straw hat. “Xiaomei, you wear the hat properly. Don’t fan me; I’m not hot.”
“How are you not hot? Look at your back, it’s soaked with sweat.” Dong Xiaomei passed her water canteen forward. “Xiao Wu, how about you stop and have some water? I’m afraid you’ll get heatstroke.”
“Alright.”
The two stopped under the shade of a tree. Suddenly, Ye Jiawu signaled for Dong Xiaomei to be quiet, tilting his head to listen carefully.
“I think someone is calling for help,” Dong Xiaomei whispered.
Ye Jiawu nodded. “I’ll go take a look.”
“I’ll go with you.” Dong Xiaomei grabbed hold of Ye Jiawu’s shirt. “I’d be scared staying here by myself.”
“Then let’s go.”
Ye Jiawu locked the bicycle and picked up a wooden stick from nearby.
The sound was coming from a sorghum field not far away. Ye Jiawu held Dong Xiaomei’s hand, and the two of them carefully moved forward.
The cries for help grew louder. Through the gaps in the leaves, they could vaguely make out figures ahead.
Ye Jiawu suddenly sped up, rushed forward, raised the stick, and struck the man who was on top of the woman.
Meanwhile, Dong Xiaomei pulled the woman to her feet and hid to the side.
Although the man was burlier than Ye Jiawu, he wasn’t as strong, and was quickly subdued by Ye Jiawu.
“What village are you from? I’m telling you, I’m the village head’s son! You’d better mind your own business, got it?”
“Let me go now, and I might let you off. Otherwise, my dad won’t let you get away with this!”
The man kept ranting. Ye Jiawu grabbed a handful of dirt from the ground and stuffed it into his mouth. “If you keep shouting nonsense, I’ll find some manure to stuff in your mouth instead.”
“Pah! Pah! You damn…” The man, seeing that Ye Jiawu meant what he said and was really about to grab some cow dung from the roadside, immediately shut his mouth, not daring to make another sound.
“What should we do now? Call the police?” Ye Jiawu asked Dong Xiaomei.
Dong Xiaomei was indignant. “This man dares to assault a woman in broad daylight! Of course we call the police!”
“No!” The woman beside Dong Xiaomei and the man both cried out at the same time.
“Sister, he was just attacking you!”
The woman glanced up at the man, her eyes reddening. “If we call the police, everyone in the village will find out. How could I face anyone after that?”
The man quickly spoke up: “Right, Yang Xiu. You’re my woman now. Just marry me properly, and I guarantee you’ll live a life of luxury.”
“Didn’t you want to get into the township primary school? I’ll have my dad arrange it for you.”
“And your brother too—your family can pick any of the factories in our township.”
“Verbal promises don’t count. Write it down for me.”
Seeing Yang Xiu take paper and a pen from her pocket, Ye Jiawu and Dong Xiaomei exchanged a look. Both of them sensed something was off.
“Let go, let go, I’ll write it for her.” The man struggled. Ye Jiawu let him go.
“Xiao Wu, let’s go.” Dong Xiaomei stepped forward and pulled Ye Jiawu away. She glanced back at Yang Xiu. “What a waste of our good intentions.”
Once out of the sorghum field, Dong Xiaomei was still fuming. Ye Jiawu, however, was more philosophical about it than she was. “We didn’t do anything wrong. As long as our conscience is clear, that’s what matters.”
“I know. My grandfather said everyone has their own fate. Don’t interfere too much, or you’ll just bring yourself unnecessary trouble.”
Dong Xiaomei took a big swig of water. “I’m just mad we wasted so much time.”
“And I got all scratched up.” She held out her arm, revealing several red marks on her fair, tender skin, all cuts from the sorghum leaves.
Ye Jiawu frowned. “Do you have any ointment on you?”
“I do.” Dong Xiaomei took out a small jar from her bag.
“Try to bear it. I’ll help you apply the medicine.”
