Reborn in Each Other’s Bodies: A Mother and Daughter’s Deadly Revenge - Chapter 14
Old Mrs. Li and Young Mrs. Li tried to rush forward to help, but they were immediately surrounded by a group of village women.
The mothers in the village, especially those with children, were furious. They believed the Feng family’s wickedness had tarnished the village’s reputation—and a ruined reputation meant ruined prospects for their own sons and daughters!
The women didn’t hold back. They threw punches and scratched at Old Mrs. Li and Young Mrs. Li, who, of course, fought back fiercely. Soon, the scene devolved into a chaotic brawl.
Unfortunately for the Feng family, they were hopelessly outnumbered. Within moments, Feng Eldest and Feng Second were beaten black and blue, while Old Mrs. Li and Young Mrs. Li were left disheveled, their faces streaked with bloody scratches.
It wasn’t until the village chief arrived in a hurry that the fight was finally broken up. After separating the combatants, the chief turned to Old Man Feng with a stern expression.
“Old Man Feng, are you really planning to sell your sixth daughter?”
The chief of Taohua Village was a lean, dark-skinned man in his forties with sharp, discerning eyes. He was known as a fair and reasonable man, but at this moment, his face was dark with displeasure.
The villagers all stared at Old Man Feng, who could no longer avoid the question. Forcing an awkward smile, he stepped forward.
“Chief, it’s all a misunderstanding. We would never sell our children.”
The crowd’s skeptical looks made it clear they didn’t believe him. Old Man Feng’s face stiffened.
Just then, two chubby figures burst from the back of the crowd, charging straight at Huang Yaning.
“How dare you bully our mother! We’ll kill you—!”
“You wretched girl, daring to mess with our family! You’re dead—!”
These were Feng Dabao and Feng Erbao, the treasured sons of Feng Eldest’s family—aged twelve and ten, respectively. Both were stout and barreled toward Huang Yaning like cannonballs.
Huang Yaning had been watching for trouble. The moment she saw them, she pretended to panic and ducked behind Granny He.
“Granny He, save me! They’re trying to kill me—!”
Though elderly, Granny He was still strong from years of farm work. Seeing two brats charging at her, shouting threats, her temper flared.
Back in the day, when she used to beat Old Mrs. Li until she cried for mercy, these two idiots hadn’t even been born yet.
With a swift kick, she sent Feng Erbao flying. Then, with a sharp slap, she knocked Feng Dabao to the ground—hard enough that he seemed glued to it.
Huang Yaning was momentarily stunned by Granny He’s combat prowess. She had noticed Granny He’s two sons standing nearby, ready to protect their mother, which was why she had chosen to hide behind her.
But it turned out Granny He didn’t even need her sons’ help…
Feng Eldest and Young Mrs. Li rushed forward, gathering their precious sons in their arms, frantically checking for injuries. Old Mrs. Li, slower due to her age, could only bend over to fuss over her grandsons.
Seeing Dabao and Erbao wailing as if they were on death’s door, Old Mrs. Li shot a venomous glare at Granny He.
“He Shi, how dare you hit my grandsons?! I’ll fight you to the death—!”
She lunged forward but was cut off by a thunderous roar.
“ENOUGH—!”
Old Man Feng bellowed, striding forward and delivering a resounding slap to Old Mrs. Li’s face.
“SMACK—!”
The sudden strike left everyone momentarily frozen. Even Feng Dabao and Feng Erbao stopped crying. The scene fell into stunned silence.
“Wife, I’ve always told you to treat Sixth Girl fairly, to treat her the same as the others. Is this how you obey me?”
He then turned to Young Mrs. Li.
“And you, Young Mrs. Li! How many wicked things have you done to Sixth Girl behind my back? She’s your niece—how could you be so cruel?”
His voice turned icy.
“If either of you ever mistreat Sixth Girl again, this family will have no place for you.”
Old Mrs. Li, who had been about to scream curses, froze at her husband’s ruthless words and the fleeting cruelty in his eyes. A shiver ran down her spine, and she fell silent.
By now, the villagers had already vented their anger by beating the Feng family. With Old Man Feng publicly reprimanding his wife, their fury began to subside.
Seeing Old Man Feng—his back slightly hunched, half his hair gray, his face etched with remorse—some even pitied him.
“Sixth Girl, I’ve wronged you. If you must blame anyone, blame me.”
He sighed heavily.
“What a disgrace our family has become!”
Then, addressing the crowd:
“Everyone, listen well. The Feng family treats all our children, boys and girls, with care. I neglected my duties before, but I swear this will never happen again. We will never sell our children—you have my word!”
The villagers, seeing the old man humbly apologize to his granddaughter and vow to do better, gradually softened.
But Huang Yaning wasn’t fooled.
Hypocrite.
She knew Old Man Feng had been fully aware of everything happening in the household—he just hadn’t cared whether she lived or died. Now, forced into a corner, he was putting on a show for the villagers.
Once the doors closed, who knew what awaited her?
She had to seize this chance to secure some benefits for herself.
After a moment’s thought, she put on a timid expression and asked:
“Grandfather… does this mean you won’t sell me anymore?”
Old Man Feng forced a kindly smile.
“Your grandmother was just trying to scare you. The Feng family would never sell a granddaughter.”
“Oh, that’s wonderful!” Huang Yaning smiled brightly before hesitantly adding, “Then… could I have a blanket? It’s so cold sleeping on straw in the woodshed…”
The villagers’ gazes turned sharp again, boring into Old Man Feng.
His face twitched.
“Of course. Your grandmother will give you a blanket later. If you’d like, you can also share a room with your three older sisters—”
His words made it sound as if she had chosen to sleep in the woodshed instead of with them.
Huang Yaning shrank back.
“I… I’d rather not. My sisters hate seeing me. They’d be unhappy if I entered their room.”
Old Man Feng: “…I’ll discipline them when they return.”
“And… can I eat at the table with my brothers and sisters? Can I have the same food as them? Do the same chores?”
What else could Old Man Feng say? He had no choice but to agree.
And so, the Feng family’s grand drama concluded with Huang Yaning’s total victory.
That evening, Feng Sanyang and Feng Siyang busied themselves in the kitchen, while Feng Wuyang swept the yard and fed the chickens and pigs.
Meanwhile, Huang Yaning sat limply in a chair, batting her eyelashes and claiming she was too weak from hunger and her earlier beating to do any work.
Her silent threat was clear: If you make me work today, I’ll collapse from exhaustion.
Old Mrs. Li was so furious she clutched her chest, groaning, before retreating to her room.
Thus, Huang Yaning did nothing. At dinner, she was given the same portion of sweet potato porridge and vegetable-stuffed grain cake as the other Feng children.
“Grandfather, don’t forget to have someone prepare my bedding.”
After the meal, she tossed out this reminder and headed straight to the woodshed.
Later, Young Mrs. Li stormed in and threw a patched-up, threadbare blanket at her before stomping away.
The blanket was old and worn, but at least it didn’t smell. Exhausted, Huang Yaning wrapped herself in it and fell into a deep sleep.
She thought she had won this battle—that life in the Feng household would improve.
But she was wrong.
Soon, she would learn just how many ways a rural family could make life miserable for someone they despised.
And her days would become even more unbearable.
