- Chapter 27 - Is This 'Self-Study' Legit?
“Hurry, have her come sit down.”
The parents thought their daughter simply had a cold and fever, but Qin Jiang got a fright just from one glance.
Because the girl’s lips were already slightly pale.
This indicated she was having significant difficulty breathing.
“Doctor, cough cough, could you please take a look at our daughter, Zihan? What’s actually wrong with her?”
“She was fine yesterday, but she suddenly became like this at noon today.”
Noticing the parents coughing while they spoke, Qin Jiang put on a mask and handed three others to them.
The father, Zhong Yue, took the masks and thanked him repeatedly.
“Thank you, doctor.”
Qin Jiang pointed to the QR code on the desk.
“Don’t mention it. Three yuan each.”
The smile instantly froze on Zhong Yue’s face.
Liu Yan, standing off to the side, couldn’t help but chuckle.
Three yuan for one mask? This doctor seems pretty money-obsessed!
Zhong Yue was starting to feel some regret.
His wife, Li Rou, shot him a disapproving look, full of reproach.
If Zhong Yue hadn’t been reluctant to spend the dozen or so yuan on a taxi fare, they would have already gone to a major hospital. They wouldn’t need to try their luck at this small traditional Chinese medicine clinic.
“What are you standing around for? Pay up and put your masks on.”
Seeing all three family members coughing, Qin Jiang didn’t dare take it lightly.
What if this family had some contagious disease and ended up infecting him?
Hearing Qin Jiang’s urging, Zhong Yue and his wife could only obediently scan the code and pay.
They just hoped this young doctor’s medical skills weren’t too far off the mark.
Qin Jiang observed Zhong Zihan’s complexion carefully, then frowned and asked:
“Have you been staying up late a lot recently?”
Zhong Zihan looked a bit panicked.
“I… I haven’t.”
Qin Jiang said with a serious expression: “Young lady, you need to tell the doctor the truth. Otherwise, it’s very bad for your condition.”
Zhong Zihan muttered under her breath: “I stay up late occasionally, I guess. Sometimes the teacher assigns too much homework, I can’t finish it during the day, so I have to stay up late at night.”
“That doesn’t seem right.”
Qin Jiang raised an eyebrow: “Judging by those dark circles of yours, you probably haven’t slept before 2 a.m. ever, have you?”
Zhong Zihan’s heart skipped a beat, thinking to herself that this doctor might actually know his stuff.
Zhong Yue and his wife trusted Zhong Zihan completely; after all, her grades at school had always been excellent.
Hearing Qin Jiang say that Zhong Zihan stayed up late every night, Li Rou wasn’t angry but instead felt heartache. “Daughter, I know you’re very anxious about studying abroad, but you shouldn’t push yourself so hard. You should go to sleep earlier at night.”
Zhong Yue was also angry: “Exactly! I’ve put up with your school’s teachers for long enough!”
“The government announced burden reduction policies ages ago, yet they still assign so much homework, completely disregarding your health!”
“Don’t be afraid, sweetie, I’ll talk to your teacher right now!”
Before Zhong Zihan could stop him, Zhong Yue had already taken out his phone and sent voice messages questioning the teacher in the parents’ WeChat group.
And he wasn’t just questioning Zihan’s homeroom teacher; he directly questioned the head of the academic affairs office.
“Director Wang, what is going on at your school? You assign so much homework every day that my daughter has to stay up late every night!”
“If anything happens to my daughter’s health, can your school take responsibility for this!”
The questioned Director Wang was completely baffled.
He immediately asked the homeroom teacher what was going on.
Unexpectedly, the homeroom teacher didn’t let Zhong Yue off the hook and fired right back.
“Zihan’s dad, you need to have evidence for what you say.”
“Our class hasn’t assigned any extracurricular homework for over half a month. Most students finish their assignments during self-study periods. How could she possibly be staying up late because of homework?”
Listening to the homeroom teacher’s response, Zhong Zihan guiltily lowered her head.
She had just made up a random excuse; she never expected her parents would actually go and question the teacher!
“Hey, this homeroom teacher of yours is something else, refusing to admit the truth until faced with the facts. Just wait, I’m calling her on video right now!”
Seeing Zhong Yue was getting worked up, Zhong Zihan quickly grabbed his hand.
“Dad, stop making a scene. We’re seeing a doctor right now. Can’t this wait until later?”
Hearing Zihan say this, Zhong Yue finally snapped out of it and quickly apologized to Qin Jiang.
“Sorry, doctor, for interrupting the consultation.”
Qin Jiang, holding a teacup, smiled and said, “It’s fine. Parents worry deeply about their children, I understand.”
Qin Jiang certainly didn’t mind Zhong Yue’s actions.
After all, he could tell at a glance that Zhong Zihan was lying.
Zhong Yue doing this actually let her experience the consequences of lying.
After saying this, Qin Jiang looked at Zhong Zihan with a knowing smile.
“But, student Zihan, do you understand now that you shouldn’t lie in front of a doctor?”
“You’d better be honest. Otherwise, it won’t do your condition any good.”
Zhong Zihan felt flustered under Qin Jiang’s gaze.
She could only nod, indicating she would cooperate fully.
“Alright, put your hand here. Let me check your pulse.”
At Qin Jiang’s indication, Zhong Zihan obediently placed her hand on the diagnosis pillow.
Qin Jiang placed his fingers on her wrist. After a moment, his expression suddenly changed.
Seeing this, Zihan’s heart leaped into her throat.
Could he have figured it out?
No, no, it can’t be. This doctor is so young, he probably isn’t that skilled.
Besides, this Chinese medicine clinic is near her home, and she’s never even heard of it.
There shouldn’t be a problem.
Just as Zhong Zihan was reassuring herself, Qin Jiang suddenly asked:
“Have you been soaking in hot springs these past few days?”
Hearing this question, Zhong Zihan was dumbstruck.
Zhong Yue and Li Rou immediately waved their hands in denial.
“How could that be? Our Zihan doesn’t even have enough time for self-study at the library every day. When would she have time to soak in hot springs?”
“Right, doctor, you must be mistaken. Our Zihan studies very diligently. She never enjoys leisure activities like soaking in hot springs.”
The couple went on and on about Zhong Zihan’s studies.
They talked about how good her study habits were, how self-disciplined she was, leaving the live stream viewers utterly astonished.
“Wakes up at 6 a.m., eats breakfast, then goes to the library to study, comes back to sleep at 11 p.m.? Do people like that actually exist in this world?”
“People like that exist. I saw some in university, but this Zihan girl doesn’t seem like one.”
“Yeah, she’s dressed up too nicely. Who has time for makeup and all that when they’re seriously studying?”
It wasn’t that the live stream viewers were being overly critical.
It’s just that this Zihan really didn’t seem like the type of top student who spent all day buried in the library.
Not only was her makeup meticulous, but she also had manicured nails, was wearing colored contacts, and earrings.
Is that really how you go for self-study?
Is this ‘self-study’ even legit?
Sure enough, the next moment, Qin Jiang waved his hand to interrupt the chattering couple.
He looked at Zhong Zihan and asked very seriously, “You need to answer me honestly. Have you been spending these last few days soaking in hot springs? And soaking with boys?”
Zhong Zihan’s face turned pale, and she quickly waved her hands, trying to explain.
But she stammered for a long time without getting a single word out.
Zhong Yue and Li Rou’s expressions also changed dramatically.
“Doctor, what are you saying! How could our daughter possibly do such a thing!”
