- Chapter 23 - Bite Down, This Might Hurt a Bit
Seeing Liu Fang so angry didn’t fluster Qin Jiang in the slightest. Instead, he remained perfectly calm and said:
“Miss Liu, I need you to calm down.”
“The fact that I’m asking this question means it’s definitely related to your condition. Please just answer me truthfully.”
Liu Fang clenched her fists. It took her a long moment before she said, “It’s… alright, I guess.”
Qin Jiang raised an eyebrow. “‘Alright’ isn’t an answer. Is it good or not? What does ‘alright’ even mean?”
Liu Fang decided to just lay it out there and said loudly, “No good! It’s no good, okay? Are you happy now?”
Qin Jiang made an ‘OK’ gesture. “Okay, got it.”
Liao Fei, lying on the sickbed, suddenly felt like the pain down below wasn’t so bad anymore.
Because his heart was in even more pain!
What could possibly be more soul-crushing for a man than being told he’s “no good”?
The fans in the live stream all felt sorry for Liao Fei.
“This guy is seriously unlucky. His girlfriend comes for a checkup, and he ends up with his dignity in tatters.”
“My heart aches for this dude for the next three minutes. I don’t know how he’s managed all these years.”
“Doesn’t this actually prove his girlfriend’s true love for him? I mean, they still haven’t broken up despite this.”
Qin Jiang didn’t have time to pay attention to the live stream comments.
After taking Liu Fang’s pulse, he said:
“Miss Liu, your condition is caused by a lumbar disc herniation. The herniated disc is compressing your cauda equina nerves, which is what’s leading to these symptoms.”
Liu Fang looked completely lost.
“Doctor Qin, could you put that in simpler terms?”
Qin Jiang nodded and continued, “Simply put, your cauda equina nerves are being compressed. These nerves happen to control sensation and movement in the lower limbs.”
“So, it’s not that your boyfriend is ‘no good.’ The problem is with you; you’ve lost sensation. Do you understand what I’m saying?”
Now everyone understood.
So it wasn’t that Liao Fei was incapable; it was that Liu Fang herself had the problem!
“Ah! It hurts so much!”
Once he knew the issue wasn’t with him, Liao Fei felt a wave of relief, followed immediately by a return of his agonized cries.
Liu Fang was so angry she gritted her teeth.
That wretched show-off!
Suppressing her displeasure, Liu Fang asked, “What would happen if I just left this condition untreated?”
Hearing Qin Jiang talk about nerves being affected, her first instinct was to not get treated here, but to go to a Western medicine hospital instead.
Besides, she’d managed all these years without sensation, and it didn’t seem to have affected her much.
Seeing that Liu Fang wasn’t taking the condition seriously, Qin Jiang said with a stern face, “As a doctor, it’s my duty to inform you that you must take this condition seriously.”
“Whether it’s your lower back pain or the weakness in your lower limbs, these are just the initial symptoms.”
“If you ignore it and let the nerves remain compressed, you could very quickly become paralyzed in the lower limbs. You could end up needing a wheelchair for the rest of your life.”
Hearing that she might become paralyzed, Liu Fang’s expression changed slightly.
But she still didn’t want to receive treatment from Qin Jiang.
However, Qin Jiang’s next words changed her mind.
“Of course, maybe needing a wheelchair doesn’t seem like such a big deal to you.”
“But the problem is, the cauda equina nerves also affect the excretory system. That means if this condition progresses further, you could experience urinary and fecal incontinence—anytime, anywhere.”
As soon as Qin Jiang said this, the live stream fans immediately had a vivid mental image.
Liu Fang sitting in a wheelchair, functioning like a waste-producing machine, leaving a trail behind her wherever she went.
The mere thought of that scene was utterly despairing!
Liu Fang became visibly anxious and quickly asked, “Then, Doctor Qin, can you cure my condition here?”
“If I go to a Western medicine hospital, can they cure it? What’s the success rate?”
Qin Jiang was inwardly amused.
Now you’re worried?
Weren’t you acting all high and mighty just a moment ago?
He didn’t answer Liu Fang immediately. Instead, he picked up his teacup and took a sip.
“Doctor Qin, not now! Why are you drinking tea? Just tell me first if you can treat it or not!”
Qin Jiang spoke with great confidence. “Whether Western medicine can treat it, I don’t know. But I certainly can treat your condition.”
“It’s just that the fee will be relatively expensive.”
Liu Fang raised an eyebrow, a bad feeling creeping up on her.
“How much?”
Qin Jiang held up five fingers.
“Fifty thousand.”
“Fifty thousand?!”
Liu Fang immediately lost her composure.
“I just paid you ninety thousand, and now you’re asking for another fifty thousand? This is extortion!”
Qin Jiang remained completely unruffled.
“That’s just my price for treatment. Take it or leave it.”
Furious, Liu Fang retorted, “I have a friend who works at the Provincial Hospital. I’m going to call him right now and ask how much it would cost there!”
“Feel free.”
While Liu Fang angrily took her phone to a corner to make the call, Qin Jiang went to check on Liao Fei.
By now, Liao Fei’s eyes were swollen.
“Doctor Qin, you didn’t say the medicated patch would hurt this much. I had no mental preparation at all.”
Qin Jiang comforted him, “That’s exactly why I couldn’t tell you in advance. If you had been mentally prepared, would you have dared to put it on?”
“Tell me, what does it feel like now?”
Liao Fei closed his eyes and concentrated for a moment before saying, “It just feels really painful and swollen, like there are lots of tiny needles poking around inside the flesh.”
Qin Jiang nodded.
“Those are the dissolved bone spurs. They’re in your urethra now, hence that sensation.”
“Alright, looking at the time, it should be about right. Tear the patch off yourself, then go over there and urinate.”
“T-tear it off… myself?” Liao Fei’s lips trembled. “I have to do it myself?”
Qin Jiang countered, “You expect me to do it for you? You’re a grown man. Be decisive.”
Seeing Qin Jiang’s look of mild contempt, Liao Fei felt he couldn’t be seen as weak.
He was a sports student, after all; his pain tolerance should be better than the average person’s, right?
Fine, better a short, sharp pain than a long, drawn-out one!
Liao Fei grabbed one corner of the patch, took a deep breath, and yanked it downwards hard!
“AAAHHH!”
Another piercing scream ripped through the clinic!
Even Liu Yan couldn’t help but wince in sympathetic pain.
A curtain blocked the view, so the camera crew could only film from outside, not seeing the exact details.
But they could still hear the conversation between Qin Jiang and Liao Fei, and see their shadows moving.
Hearing Liao Fei’s agonized screams, the live stream fans started virtually laying white roses and lighting virtual candles.
“This is brutal. This guy is officially the unluckiest soul I’ve seen so far! He’s probably never going to want to use a medicated patch again in his life.”
“I thought he was in pain when he first put the patch on, but it turns out the worst part was tearing it off.”
“So sometimes there are benefits to choosing Western medicine. At least they put you under general anesthesia; you take a nap and it’s all over.”
“Hey, do you think it’s possible that Doctor Qin could have used a local anesthetic but just… forgot?”
“Whoa, that’s actually a possibility!”
