As An Antique Shop Owner, It's Only Reasonable That I Know A Bit Of Magic - Chapter 64
The two walked side by side, talking and laughing.
“Rabbi, I entrust my daughter to your care.”
The middle-aged woman looked at the tall, thin man beside her, her tone earnest.
“Mrs. Johnson, rest assured.”
The man did not refuse and nodded promptly.
“The devil will surely fail. Before the glory of God, all evil will have nowhere to hide.”
As they talked, they inadvertently noticed Su Fan leaning against the car door.
The woman frowned.
She recognized the car as her daughter Scarlett’s.
But she didn’t recall her daughter hiring such a young driver.
I’ll ask about it once I’m inside.
Thinking this, the woman led the clergyman into the villa…
Not long after they entered, Su Fan heard the sound of Scarlett’s voice inside, tinged with anger.
A short while later, she was seen striding out quickly, visibly upset.
Scarlett came to the car, pulled the door open, and got in.
“Let’s go, Su.”
Her voice was calm, but her breathing indicated she had been quite angered moments before.
“What’s there to be so angry about?”
Su Fan’s tone was as even as ever.
“You saw my mother, right? She brought a Rabbi from Judaism.”
At this, Scarlett showed clear irritation.
“I’ve told my mother many times I don’t need it, but she went and invited him anyway.”
It was true that a film crew had sent an invitation, but her mother’s real purpose was to have this so-called Rabbi perform an exorcism on Scarlett, to free her from the nightmares and the threat of death.
If that was all, it might have been tolerable, but…
“He angrily declared that the protective talisman you’re carrying is a devil’s tool and demanded you throw it away, right?”
Su Fan’s precise description surprised Scarlett.
“Su, do you have clairvoyance or something?”
Having clairvoyance wouldn’t let me see inside; I’d need X-ray vision and lip-reading skills to know what you said. You might as well say super hearing…
Besides, does this situation even require supernatural powers? Anyone could guess it.
Judaism, Catholicism, and Christianity each believe they are the true faith. They’ve argued plenty over this, but these three share a surprising consensus in one direction: the rejection and disparagement of other beliefs.
The Bible explicitly states there is only one God in the world; all others are devilish incarnations meant to deceive people.
With this foundational doctrine, followers of these three faiths have openly persecuted adherents of other religions, only moderating somewhat in modern times.
Scarlett carrying Su Fan’s talisman was, to a Jewish believer, no different from heresy. For such heresy, back in the Middle Ages, the punishment was being sent to the stake for a barbecue combo.
One can imagine how the person who just entered must have denigrated the talisman and Su Fan, who gave it to Scarlett.
“Aren’t you angry?” Scarlett asked cautiously. “He questioned your abilities, spoke disrespectfully.”
“I’ve seen far too many people who refuse to admit they’re wrong until faced with irrefutable proof.”
“So you’ve cultivated a broad-minded heart through this?”
“Not exactly. If the other party doesn’t understand spiritual principles and refuses to listen to reason, I also know a little something about physical persuasion.”
Su Fan wasn’t really angry.
Mainly because being called a fraud was just too low-impact to bother him.
If someone said Su Fan didn’t know how to run a business and that’s why his shop wasn’t successful, then he’d probably be annoyed.
“From now on, just keep your distance from your mother.”
“You can never predict what people who are overly devout in their religion might do.”
Hearing this, Scarlett fell into a rare silence.
“Actually, she wasn’t always like this. It’s just that she started believing to fit into the film industry circles, and then…”
At this point, she couldn’t help but sigh.
Scarlett didn’t say more. She just turned the ignition key.
The low rumble of the engine started. As she turned the steering wheel, the car pulled out from the temporary parking spot, ready to leave.
Just at that moment, a cold wind blew straight towards them.
The air, carrying a strange and chilling presence, made Su Fan narrow his eyes.
——-
Not far away, the owner of a villa was repairing his fence.
He used a claw hammer to pull out a rusted nail from the fence, but he applied too much force, and the nail flew out.
The rusty nail bounced and skittered onto the road, landing with its sharp point facing up.
Next to where the nail landed, a tree trimmer was using a small electric saw to cut off branches that were growing in the wrong direction.
The cut ends of these branches had sharp, angled points, looking like sharp spikes.
Elsewhere, a couple on a motorcycle was riding towards them, all lovey-dovey.
They kissed intermittently, with the woman in the back even trying to snuggle into the riding man’s arms…
——-
A intense sense of crisis suddenly surged in Su Fan’s heart.
At the same moment, Scarlett’s car stereo suddenly started playing a song by a singer who had died in a plane crash.
“What’s going on…?”
Scarlett looked in surprise at the car stereo that had started playing automatically and tapped it lightly a couple of times.
She looked up and saw Su Fan’s grave expression.
“What’s wrong, Su?”
The very second after Scarlett spoke, the couple on the motorcycle ahead had a sudden accident.
Having ridden for a long time on the hot road surface, their tire had worn down and softened. When it hit the rusty nail, it blew out instantly.
The handlebars twisted uncontrollably, making the woman shriek.
The bike, no longer going straight, veered uncontrollably towards the tree where the worker was.
Thump!
A sound of impact. The tree shook violently from the collision. The worker, caught off guard, lost his grip, and the electric saw flew from his hands – straight towards Scarlett’s head!
Scarlett had just looked up because of the bikers’ shouts when she saw the electric saw flying right at her face. In that instant, fear and shock froze her in place; she didn’t even think to duck.
In that flash, the talisman in Scarlett’s bosom suddenly grew hot. A burning sensation stung her, making her instinctively stomp on the accelerator.
The car lurched forward, moving a short distance ahead!
The electric saw flew over Scarlett’s head and embedded itself in the back seat, shredding the expensive, handcrafted leather upholstery to pieces!
Debris flew everywhere, caught by the wind, and was blown to the front, obscuring Scarlett’s vision.
In her panic, she forgot to release the accelerator, and the car gradually picked up speed.
Realizing the danger, Scarlett instinctively tried to brake, but the wheels suddenly skidded, sending the car into an uncontrolled slide to one side.
In the passenger seat, Su Fan turned his head. In that split second, the sharp, pointed branch was less than five centimeters from his eyeball!
