As a Reincarnated NPC, I Want to Live a Peaceful Life - Chapter 35
I see. So they are family members of the rebels, forced to flee here to escape being rooted out and eliminated? [Eolia], if I remember correctly, is a northern region, another server. How did they cross such a treacherous desert? Since they had to flee because they were being pursued, it means that more vampires or related individuals will likely arrive in the future. Getting involved with them will only bring more trouble.
Ugh, I regret getting on this carriage. Then again, it’s not like I had much choice. I was forced into this.
…
Another half hour passed. As the in-game time approached 10 PM, “Alan,” who was driving the carriage, finally spotted something. I leaned out the window and looked down the path ahead – several mountains stood before us, acting as a natural fork that split the path into two. The left led to a town, the right to a forest. Strangely, the land on the town side was fully cultivated with crops, while the forest side had only sparse trees.
Well, that’s what you call a stark contrast.
Thinking this looked promising, I clutched the magic stone in my hand, eager to get off the carriage and ask for directions to the shortcut to [Feltero].
After all, the vampires pose a potential threat to me, and I’m probably a complication for them too. Wouldn’t it be better for everyone if I just left? Hehe, as long as I can use this magic stone to buy supplies – though ordinary currency would be even better. Too bad I left it all with Alec for safekeeping.
However, as our carriage gradually approached the town, some commotion arose behind us.
One, two… a total of five guards on horseback rushed past us. The captain was holding something high, what looked like a rolled-up scroll or perhaps a portrait – but that wasn’t what caught my attention. It was their armor and attire…
This… this is clearly the uniform of [Maltese] guards. No way. Have they really sent guards out of the city to hunt down the vampires? Or are they trying to retrieve the “kidnapped girl”?… They didn’t need to go to such lengths.
I’m going to faint. I never expected not only the NPCs but even the player guards to be so persistent.
The guards reached the town before us. As for our carriage, it stopped at the fork in the road, not far from the town.
It seems they also realized who those people were and stopped to figure out a plan.
“What should we do? It seems the guards have already caught wind of our direction.”
“Yarje and I will be fine, but Alan, what about you?”
“Don’t worry about me. Let’s first decide what to do with this girl.”
As soon as the words were spoken, “Alan” and Camilla simultaneously turned their gazes towards me, making me feel a bit awkward. I don’t really have a problem; if anyone gets in my way, I’ll just take them out. No need to worry about me. Seriously, could you hurry it up a bit? At this rate, we’ll only look more suspicious.
Dammit, why are they starting to argue now?! Even if you don’t get along, you shouldn’t be squabbling at a critical time like this! And I’m hungry! Please, get me something to eat! (Why don’t I get it myself? Because I’m too hungry to move!)
I kept all these words bottled up inside, realizing it probably wasn’t the right time to say them. I could only silently watch the unknown town, which had been noisy ever since the guards entered.
Compared to [Maltese], this kind of town is more like a village. But compared to a typical village, it has relatively sturdy buildings and a higher population density. Hmm, it has no walls surrounding it, making it easy for monster hordes to attack and for wanted criminals inside to escape.
Arguing and discussing are not the same thing. I once, in a fit of extreme rage, knocked out my childhood best friend just to prove my point – what the heck am I even talking about?!
One-tenth. My hunger bar is down to one-tenth. If I don’t suppress this hunger soon, I’ll die in a few seconds. Maybe with my BOSS constitution, I could last a few seconds longer, but that’s meaningless. I’ve already reached the point where I don’t have the strength to stand up, barely able to wave my arms. I should probably be dizzy and lightheaded too, but it seems that effect isn’t kicking in.
Slumped to the side, on the verge of passing out, I looked at the two vampires who were still arguing. Closing my eyes, I focused my mind on my stomach…
By reducing sensory input from my eyes and ears, I enhanced suppression.
I hope this works.
…..
…
Cold. For some reason, a chilly wind was seeping through my sweater, making me shiver involuntarily.
After the cold came a wave of heat, swirling before my eyes.
What’s going on? Have I reached the paradise of alternating ice and fire?
…
I’m not dead yet. I shouldn’t be dead. But I can’t be sure.
I could tell whether it was real or fake as soon as I opened my eyes, but I dared not distract myself to look at the outside world, because my empty stomach had reached a point where I could not afford to be distracted for even a moment.
But just opening them for one second should be fine, right? No problem.
…
…..
“Hey, she still won’t open her eyes. Is it because she doesn’t like the [Ice Rice] and [Stewed Noodles]?”
“Why are you offering things that medieval people aren’t used to? In my opinion, the perfect food for her is definitely our locally produced [Brothy Egg Roll]. Don’t tell anyone, but my dad makes these by hand—”
“I know, I know, you ate it every day at the academy… But I never expected your dad to play this game too. Speaking of which, is the version made for us vampires suitable for her to eat?”
“… What’s the point of staying in a reality like that? Isn’t this kind of game created precisely for this reason? Enough of that! Ah, this version is normal, no need to worry. By the way, Yarje, do you have any food? Since we can’t eat it, we might as well give it to her.”
“Ah, I do, I have… three [Delicious Baguettes]…”
“Great! In that case, let’s see whose food can attract her.”
“Ah, come on, Camilla, do we have to turn everything into a competition?”
“My [Brothy Egg Roll] will definitely not lose!!”
“(Yarje: Cheering with zero enthusiasm)”
…
A scent, a scent is coming closer. My twitching nose tells me food is approaching. I don’t know if it’s a trap, but I don’t care anymore. Trap or poison, bring it on. I’ll accept it all.
Three scents. I automatically ignored the previously cold and hot directions and leaned towards the other side –
It split into two scents again. One was unfamiliar but very appetizing. The other was somewhat familiar, with a wheaty aroma… it was bread, the baguette type… The bread was baked wonderfully soft, which felt surprisingly unexpected for a baguette’s typically hard exterior –
And then, without a second thought, I bit into it. Sure enough, it was a baguette, though the tip was a bit too large to fit easily into my small mouth.
Bite by bite, the soft bread fell into my mouth… I can’t describe how delicious it was. In my previous life, only bread could give me that sense of relaxation amidst the heaviness, that irresistible feeling!
(I personally love eating bread too. Those who enjoy bread probably understand – you just can’t stop.)
…
…..
“Mmph~… munch…”
“Ah, my bread won. Camilla, Alan.”
“Eh~?! Impossible! My [Brothy Egg Roll] shouldn’t have lost!”
“In that case, I should probably put away the [Ice Rice] and [Stewed Noodles] for now. Since she’s not eating them now, maybe she will later – uh, wait, will she even still be with us then?”
“(Munch munch) N-Not necessarily (gulp). Maybe her family will show up halfway? We’re heading to the beast-kin city [Feltero]. Logically… it seems like she shouldn’t go there. Why… did we even bring her out of [Maltese] in the first place?”
“(Whispering) Did you forget? We got a quest prompt. We accepted it somewhat blindly at first, but since the destination was also [Feltero], we just went along with it.”
“Oh, right, right, now that you mention it, I remember. Okay, Yarje, how is she eating?”
“…. All three, finished. All of them, not even a crumb left. Now she’s rubbing against my hand like a cat, seems like she wants more.”
“… She does seem a bit like a cat, but without the sound, without the soul. I don’t have any bread, only some snacks I picked up along the way.”
“Don’t look at me. Since she gave up on my [Brothy Egg Roll] (which I already finished eating), she missed her chance to enjoy it.”
“Hmm, poor Juria Tenri. Can’t even fulfill such a small request.”
“Ahem!”
“Gah!”
…
…..
I have strength now. My satiety is almost full. While I could technically eat more, there’s no need to be wasteful. Those three baguettes were so delicious; I finished them and still want more!
It’s a bad habit of mine – I wouldn’t say I’m a big eater, but when it comes to bread, I can eat almost any amount and still not feel full afterwards. It’s like I have a built-in bread radar. Because of this, ever since then, I was the only one in the entire office who would bring bread (lots of it), and I’d also buy a bunch after work, intending to eat it the next day, (but end up finishing it all as soon as I got home).
Ahaha, my stamina has mostly recovered. By the way, who was it that fed me the bread earlier? Meh, doesn’t matter.
I took a deep breath and suddenly opened my eyes, realizing I wasn’t in the carriage. Above me was an unfamiliar ceiling. I was lying on a strangely comfortable bed, covered with a quilt –
So hot.
Instinctively, I kicked off the quilt, jumped out of bed, checked my status bar, and glanced at the in-game time.
Good, all stats are back to normal.
11:00 PM
Has it already been an hour? It shouldn’t take an hour to eat a few baguettes. Or… was I already here while I was eating the bread? Is this some inn? Did that town have a place like this? (I look around the messy room) Well, it’s not exactly tidy. The only decent thing here is the bed.
It’s quiet outside. Did the guards post a notice or something? Speaking of which, where are those vampires? And how did they get past the security cordon and into this place?
Then, I heard a voice from downstairs –
“Another few baguettes, please!”
