After the Fall of the Demon Race, Reincarnated as a Demon Girl - Chapter 22
After clearing most of the doubts in her heart, Renith prepared to set off for Mobius City. She followed Noxus back to the estate and silently watched as he clumsily gulped down one cup of coffee after another.
“I’m ready to go.”
Noxus finally recovered, smiling at Renith as he said:
“Well, that’s good. Would you like me to drive you there, or would you prefer to take the train?”
“Is there a big difference between the two?”
Renith expressed her confusion.
“Oh, the difference is huge.”
Noxus explained.
“The train is naturally much faster than a car. However, if I personally take you, I can be your exclusive guide in Mobius City. But if you choose to go alone, you’ll likely have to follow the arrangements of the ‘Scholars’ organization once you arrive…”
“Hmm, I see. I’ll go on my own.”
Although Noxus had indeed provided Renith with considerable help in many matters, as a transmigrator, he remained firmly on her list of targets.
Unless one day Renith could eliminate enough transmigrators to restore balance to the world, Noxus would likely not escape her judgment.
Moreover, Renith simply did not wish to have too much interaction with Noxus from the bottom of her heart.
“Alright then~ Have a safe journey. I won’t see you out.”
Noxus shrugged helplessly, though a faint, almost imperceptible hint of glee flickered across his face.
For him, this was a rather good outcome. Not only was he free from the threat posed by Renith, but he could also guiltlessly lounge around on his comfortable bed for a couple of days, without having to waste this pleasant leisure time on the hassles of travel.
Before leaving, Renith and Philo explored the estate for a while.
Thanks to Philo’s innate “X-ray vision,” the two found a chest of jewelry, two chests of gold and silver, several muskets, four or five crates of bullets, and some of Elbard’s letters.
Among them, one letter particularly caught Renith’s attention.
*“Dear Baron Elbard,
I am very satisfied with the materials you provided recently. Do you have any higher-quality materials? I am willing to pay double the market price for them.
Additionally, I sincerely advise you to expel Giroce and Lecter from your territory. They only damage the experimental materials and cause trouble for you!
Lastly, I also suggest you move to your estate in Mobius City. Things have been rather unstable lately, and the help you’ve given me is enough for me to offer you protection in return.
With love,
Demyhoff”*
After quickly skimming through the letter, an uncontrollable rage surged within Renith’s heart.
Elbard was secretly colluding with someone named Demyhoff, regularly providing villagers as “materials” to meet Demyhoff’s experimental needs.
Renith stored the letter in her Codex. Just as she stepped out of Elbard’s estate, she spotted Schubert and Lance, who had been waiting outside for a long time.
Seeing Renith emerge, Schubert gently waved a piece of paper in his hand, his tone feigning a hint of complaint.
“Why did you just leave like that? If it weren’t for Lance’s sharp ears catching the sound of that motorcycle, we would have thought you’d vanished, and we’d never catch up with you again.”
“Has everything in Roean been settled?”
Renith glanced up at the sun high in the sky, feeling a wave of emotion. She truly hadn’t realized that her conversation with Noxus had lasted the entire morning.
Schubert and Lance both nodded.
“We finished handling matters in Roean about two hours ago.”
“Are you planning to head to Mobius City next?”
Lance followed up with a question.
Renith gave a slight nod in acknowledgment. Seeing this, Lance immediately pulled an envelope and an elegant business card from his pocket, solemnly placing them in Renith’s hand.
“You’ve done so much for us, yet we’ve never had a proper chance to repay you. This is a small token of my appreciation. If you haven’t found a place to stay in Mobius City yet, you can go to this law firm, give them this letter, and they will take you to my residence. You’re welcome to stay there.”
“Also, if you need anything, you can discuss it with my mentor. She will do her best to accommodate your requests. She is trustworthy.”
Renith accepted without hesitation. After all, having another trustworthy ally was always a good thing.
“Thank you, then. Is there anything else?”
Renith asked.
Schubert pointed toward the village, where wisps of cooking smoke were rising. It was already noon, almost time for lunch.
“Would you like to have lunch before setting off?”
“Sure.”
Renith returned to the village with Schubert and the others. Lance and Schubert’s mother, having survived the ordeal, prepared a lavish lunch to repay Renith for saving their lives.
After lunch, as everyone was relaxing, they suddenly heard low, powerful rumbling from the direction of the railway tracks in the distance.
Through the half-frosted glass window, they could see a train painted in sleek black, dragging a long whistle behind it, slowly and steadily approaching the village.
Renith’s gaze shifted from the train to Schubert and Lance beside her, and she asked softly:
“Those employees regularly come here to collect the cattle and sheep. Have you made arrangements for dealing with Elbard and the breeding farms going forward?”
Hearing this, Lance nodded gently. He had already considered these details thoroughly. He had arranged for villagers to take turns caring for the cattle and sheep in batches, trying to keep everything as it was, and later let capable villagers manage the breeding farms.
The street restaurant had suffered a fire, and the owner, Leya, had been “sent to Mobius City for treatment.” After discussing it, Lance and Schubert had their mother set up a stall on the street to temporarily take over the restaurant’s function.
As for Elbard, Schubert had spread the word that Elbard was seriously ill, and all affairs were temporarily being handled by Schubert, the steward.
This way, for the time being, no one would likely notice anything amiss.
“Hmm, the current arrangements seem adequate. By the way, there’s a ‘Chosen One’ named Noxus still staying in Elbard’s estate. Compared to other ‘Chosen Ones,’ he’s relatively reasonable. Plus, he’s quite knowledgeable. If you encounter any difficulties, you can use my name to seek advice from him.”
Schubert instinctively rubbed his back and wrist, the memory of being pinned down and thoroughly dominated by Noxus not long ago flashing through his mind. It had not been a pleasant experience.
“Even so, while he may not be a threat to you, the rest of us probably wouldn’t stand a chance against even one of his fingers.”
Schubert said with a bitter smile.
Renith thought for a moment, then rummaged through her Codex space before finally finding some papers she had stashed in a corner.
“You now have two choices. One is that I provide you with magi-tech tools to arm yourselves, which would allow you to stand up to Noxus at your current level. The other is to rely on your own strength to grow stronger.”
Renith pulled out various items from her Codex space, piling them up on the ground.
Schubert opened his mouth to speak but ultimately remained silent. He had initially wanted to refuse Renith’s offer, as they had already received so much help from her. But then it occurred to him that without her assistance, they would be unable to keep Noxus in check.
Are we getting even more indebted to her?
“I choose the second option.”
Lance broke the silence, speaking first.
Seeing this, Schubert initially wanted to dissuade him, but when his eyes met Lance’s, the words died in his throat. Lance’s eyes were pure, like clear spring water, without a trace of impurity—clear and bright.
In the past, Lance had always maintained this purity. It was this purity that had kept him from giving up in the face of numerous difficulties, and it was this purity that had supported him through hardships, enabling him to become a somewhat successful lawyer.
“Why? Logically, shouldn’t you choose the magi-tech tools?”
Renith looked at Lance with a puzzled expression, gently shaking the magi-tech tool in her hand.
“The path of cultivation is arduous and long. Besides, both of you have already passed the optimal age for training. It would be extremely difficult to achieve significant progress.”
She paused before continuing:
“In comparison, magi-tech tools are much more convenient. They only require consuming stored magical energy to grant you the power to rival Noxus.”
Lance listened quietly, remaining silent for a moment before speaking with determination:
“I understand that magi-tech tools are powerful, and I’ve heard about them. But ultimately, that power isn’t truly our own. Both objects and humans have their limits in capability and potential. However, objects are just objects, while humans are the core of it all.”
“Perhaps the upper limit for our generation is locked, just like these magi-tech tools. But our descendants have infinite potential. As long as generation after generation hones themselves, one day, a power that eternally pursues freedom and breaks through limits will be born.”
Schubert could no longer contain his surging emotions and suddenly stood up. Although he didn’t possess Lance’s foresight or eloquence to explain profound truths, he was deeply moved by Lance’s words.
“That’s right! External strength is just external strength. What truly matters is what we hold in our own hands. As long as we continuously strengthen ourselves, outsiders will never be able to bully us again!”
“Our freedom isn’t just for ourselves, but for the freedom of our descendants! For the sake of freedom—”
He raised his right fist high and thrust it vigorously toward the sky.
Who would have thought that just a few days ago, he had been a timid and hesitant person? Now, his eyes revealed an unusual firmness, as if something inside him had been ignited, burning brighter and brighter.
Renith couldn’t help but recall a quote Hertis had once cited:
“A single spark can start a prairie fire. It seems the spark is about to spread.”
“I’ve already checked for you. Neither of you has the aptitude to become mages. Some of the children in the village have magical talent, but their prospects are limited. I will leave behind methods for warrior training, and the village children can practice as well.”
Earlier, while Lance was explaining his views, Renith had already asked Philo to conduct a scan.
“I wish you all the best. And, the meal was delicious.”
Renith left. Before departing, she visited the village chief’s estate and then vanished under the blazing sun, disappearing without a trace.
Schubert and Lance pushed open the door of the chief’s wooden cabin. Inside were two chests of gold and silver, one chest of jewelry, papers recording warrior training methods, anti-transmigrator magi-tech tools, and precautionary notes.
“It seems we really owe her more and more… She has helped us so much. How can I ever repay her?”
Schubert said with a bitter smile.
“Grow stronger, and then reap the fruits of freedom. That is the best way to repay her.”
Lance clenched his fist and raised his right hand high.
“For the sake of freedom, isn’t that right?”
