Super Doctor - Chapter 55
Sun Lingfei sat in the booth of UBC Coffee, idly tapping her phone against the table. She glanced at her watch—five minutes to six—but Xu Ze still hadn’t shown up.
“Hmph… This guy, seriously. Even if I’m treating, you should at least come early. What kind of guy makes a girl wait…?” She pouted her delicate lips and muttered under her breath, “If he dares to be late, I’ll make him regret it.”
Fortunately, Xu Ze didn’t give her a reason to explode. A moment later, her phone buzzed: “I’m at the entrance. Which table?”
“At least you’re not late…” Miss Sun huffed, checking her watch again—two minutes to six. She pursed her lips and replied, “Booth 108.”
Soon, Xu Ze appeared before her. Taking in her pout and irritated expression, he couldn’t help but chuckle. “What’s wrong, Miss Sun? Who had the nerve to upset you today?”
Hearing his clear, slightly magnetic voice, Sun Lingfei’s mood inexplicably lifted. She looked up and snorted, “Some annoying guy. He’s been bothering me a lot lately.”
Then, noticing Xu Ze’s casual outfit—light blue jeans and a white graphic T-shirt—and the absence of his glasses, her eyes brightened. “Huh? You’re not wearing glasses today?”
“Heh, switched to contacts,” Xu Ze replied with a smile, settling into the seat across from her. Leaning back comfortably against the sofa, he rested his head on his hands and grinned at her earlier remark. “Someone actually dares to harass you? That guy’s got guts!”
“What? Am I that scary?” Sun Lingfei’s eyes narrowed, her voice laced with playful indignation.
Not wanting to provoke her further, Xu Ze quickly waved his hands. “No, no, not at all! It’s just… given your skills, I’m surprised anyone would dare pester you. Is this guy stronger than you?”
“Nah, he’s no match for me. Tall and bulky, but all show—no real skill. We grew up in the same neighborhood, and our families are close, so I can’t really lay into him. That’s why he’s gotten so shameless.”
She sighed, then added, “Actually, he’s in the same field as you, just a few years older. Graduated from Xingda over a year ago and works at a hospital now. He hadn’t bothered me for a while, but lately, he keeps showing up at our campus for no reason. So annoying.”
Xu Ze raised an eyebrow. “Well, if you can’t hit him or shoo him away, I guess you’ll just have to tolerate it. At least he can’t come every day.”
“Oh, he practically does! He’s been here three or four times this week. It’s like he doesn’t even have a job!” She pouted, then eyed Xu Ze thoughtfully. “Hey, you’re a guy—don’t you understand how other guys think? Got any ideas?”
Xu Ze shook his head lightly, a wry smile forming. “If even you can’t handle him, what can I do? You don’t expect me to fight him for you, do you?”
“Fight him?” Sun Lingfei’s eyes lit up momentarily, but after sizing Xu Ze up, she deflated. “Never mind. You don’t look like you’d win against him.”
“What?” Xu Ze straightened, stunned. “You were actually considering that?”
“Yeah. If you were buffer, I might’ve asked you to rough him up. But…” She shrugged, her large eyes brimming with resignation. “That guy might be all talk compared to me, but he did learn some martial arts as a kid. Your average guy wouldn’t stand a chance.”
“Buffer, huh…?” Xu Ze glanced at his own arms. Though toned, they were far from bulging—no wonder Miss Sun had her doubts. He chuckled dryly. “What about your taekwondo club? Can’t you rally a few people to teach him a lesson?”
“No way. Most of them aren’t that skilled either. It’d take two or three to take him down.” She shook her head. “Plus, if they found out he was harassing me, they’d go overboard. If things got ugly, I’d feel terrible for his parents.”
“……” Xu Ze blinked, at a loss. If force was off the table, what else was there? Sure, he could handle a guy or two now, but why invite trouble?
So he simply watched Sun Lingfei sigh dramatically, maintaining an innocent expression.
“Forget it. Let’s just eat.” Shaking off her frustration, she pressed the service button, and a waiter soon arrived.
After ordering a few dishes, she handed the menu to Xu Ze. “Get whatever you want. My treat.”
Xu Ze didn’t hold back. Sun Lingfei was loaded, and while his system no longer relied heavily on food for energy, skipping a meal was just self-sabotage. He picked his favorites without hesitation and returned the menu.
Sun Lingfei nodded approvingly. She hated guys who pretended to be modest—Xu Ze’s straightforwardness was refreshing.
Oddly, Xu Ze felt at ease too. With other girls, he might’ve insisted on paying to play the gentleman, but with Sun Lingfei—the campus belle—he was completely relaxed, speaking his mind without pretense.
Back when he dated Zhang Linyun, UBC Coffee had drained his wallet countless times. The memory made him smirk. “Maybe it’s because I don’t have ulterior motives with Sun Lingfei that I’m so calm…”
As their food arrived, Xu Ze dug in hungrily.
Sun Lingfei nibbled at her salad, amused as he polished off half his pasta in minutes.
Studying his face—the well-defined brows, bright eyes always tinged with casual amusement, slightly upturned lips, and sharp chin—she felt a flicker of admiration. “Xu Ze’s actually really good-looking. Way more appealing than show-offs like Zhang Tianyu.”
Unlike the typical arrogant guys, he carried himself with quiet confidence, whether relaxed or focused—a blend of restraint and charisma that was uniquely captivating.
Plus, he lacked the shallowness of other boys. While they wasted their youth, he juggled part-time jobs and studies, already becoming a capable doctor in his own right.
“He’s a cut above the rest. And so earnest—no games like other guys. Zhang Linyun was blind to let him go.” Recalling how heartbroken Xu Ze had been after the breakup, Sun Lingfei wasn’t sure whether to feel glad or sorry for Zhang Linyun.
Then, an idea struck. Her smile widened. “Xu Ze’s perfect. Presentable enough to be a shield. If that guy thinks I’m taken, he’ll back off, right…?”
“Hmm… He’s softhearted. If I appeal to his sympathy, reason with him, and remind him he owes me a meal, he won’t refuse…”
