Super Doctor - Chapter 156
The patient with Guillain-Barré syndrome was recovering well. By the fifth morning, he was already able to get out of bed and walk, which put Director Qu’s mind at ease. That afternoon, he prepared a report on the treatment and analysis of the case and handed it to Dean Ou.
Flipping through the documents, Dean Ou couldn’t help but smile. He immediately had copies made, then personally drafted a research project application, stamped it, and sent it off to Beijing for approval by the Ministry of Health.
Turning to Director Qu, who looked equally excited, Dean Ou said warmly, “Lao Qu, you’ve all worked hard!”
Director Qu chuckled. “Dean, as long as we secure this project, a little hard work is nothing.”
Dean Ou nodded approvingly. “Xu Ze contributed a lot this time. He really put in the effort… By the way, he’s also a graduate of Xingda University, right?”
At the mention of this, Director Qu’s heart skipped a beat, but he forced a smile and nodded. Yeah, he’s from Xingda… but he hasn’t graduated yet—he’s still got two years left…
“Hmm… That young man shows promise. We should nurture him. I’ll have Old Sun keep an eye on him from now on.”
Hearing that Dean Ou was entrusting this to Minister Sun, Director Qu relaxed slightly. Minister Sun was already in the know, so there shouldn’t be any immediate slip-ups. With so many staff in the hospital, Dean Ou would probably forget about Xu Ze once this matter blew over. By the time Xu Ze returned to school, it wouldn’t be an issue anymore.
With the project application submitted, Xu Ze finally felt a weight lift off his shoulders. His part was done, and he could now focus on his work without further distractions. Peace had returned.
Seeing the growing smile on Patient Lao Wang’s face, Xu Ze’s mood brightened as well. For a doctor, perhaps nothing was more satisfying than watching their patients recover one by one.
…..
After work that afternoon, Xu Ze drove up to Tianyang Mountain again. Old Master Tang’s treatment was nearly complete—just two more acupuncture sessions, and he’d be fully recovered.
By the time Xu Ze arrived, the old man had already had the chef prepare dinner and was waiting for him. Seated at the table, Old Master Tang looked at Xu Ze with affectionate amusement. “Kid, I heard you stirred up trouble at the hospital again?”
“Huh?” Xu Ze blinked, then chuckled. “Nothing serious. Just some old guy throwing his weight around. Had to put him in his place.”
“Old guy? That ‘old guy’ is the head of internal medicine!” The old man suddenly slammed the table and burst into laughter. “But good for you! My grandson should have that kind of backbone. As long as you’re in the right, hold your head high and never back down.”
“Keep it up. You’re still young—don’t learn to cower like others. Do what’s right, and don’t worry about the future. Grandpa will take care of that.”
“Mm. Thanks, Grandpa.” Xu Ze smiled, warmth flickering in his eyes.
For years, he had relied solely on himself, treading carefully and fighting alone. Now, suddenly, he had a mountain of support behind him. It felt… really, really good.
…..
After dinner and a short rest, Xu Ze finished the acupuncture session and prepared to leave. Just then, his phone rang. It was Tao Yiyi, whom he hadn’t seen in a while.
“Xu Ze… Are you still on the mountain?”
“Yeah, I am.”
“Can I hitch a ride back to school with you?”
“Sure. I’m about to head down now. Are you ready?”
“Ah—perfect! I’ll wait for you at home!” Her voice sparkled with delight.
Hanging up, Xu Ze smiled and started the car, heading downhill.
Halfway down, he turned onto Qinglin Road and pulled up in front of an elegant villa. After smoothly turning the car around, he stopped at the gate and lightly tapped the horn.
Soon, a graceful figure emerged, smiling sweetly at him through the window.
As Tao Yiyi settled into the passenger seat, her mother appeared at the doorway, waving at them with a knowing smile before retreating inside.
Xu Ze sighed inwardly. Yep. Mrs. Tao definitely has her sights set on me…
…..
Meanwhile, at the foot of the mountain, several sports cars were parked along the roadside, engines silent but tension thick. Inside a Ferrari, Zhang Junhai snarled into his phone, “Liangzi! What the hell? I still haven’t seen that bastard come down!”
“Junhai, I swear I saw his car leave the mountain ten minutes ago. He should be there any second…”
“Fine. We’ll wait. Tonight, I’m breaking his legs!” Hanging up, Zhang Junhai’s eyes gleamed with malice.
The Maserati glided smoothly down the winding road. The cool night breeze carried a faint floral scent from the trees, and Xu Ze inhaled deeply, relaxing. “Why head back to school tonight?”
“It’s boring at home. My roommates are all there—I miss them.” Tao Yiyi studied his profile, her smile soft.
“Yeah, staying home too long does get dull.”
“What about you? What’ve you been up to lately?”
“Working.”
“Working?” She tilted her head. “I heard you left the clinic. Did you find another part-time job?”
Xu Ze glanced at her curiously. “How’d you know I quit the clinic? Not many people know about that.”
A faint blush rose to her cheeks. “Oh, just… heard it from someone.”
“Hmm.” He let it drop.
…..
As they neared the bottom of the mountain, Xu Ze’s expression tightened. Blocking the road ahead were several familiar-looking sports cars.
“Looks like we’ve got trouble,” he said calmly. “Stay in the car, no matter what.”
Tao Yiyi tensed but nodded. Despite her nerves, Xu Ze’s composed demeanor gave her an odd sense of security. “Be careful.”
Xu Ze parked a short distance away, raised the convertible top, and stepped out.
Zhang Junhai emerged from his Ferrari, smirking. “What’s wrong? Not so cocky now?”
Xu Zen arched a brow. “Still sore about last time?”
“Damn right I am! Tonight, you’re crawling home!”
“Alright. Call out your lackeys—I’ve got a shower waiting.” Xu Ze shrugged.
With his near-E-rank physique—comparable to an elite special forces soldier—and Xiao Dao’s support, he wasn’t worried unless they pulled out heavy artillery.
Zhang Junhai sneered and clapped his hands. Three men stepped out from the other cars, moving toward Xu Ze with deliberate strides.
Studying them, Xu Zen frowned slightly, then smirked. “Not bad. You actually found some decent muscle this time.”
“Damn right! You think I’d flip in the same ditch twice?” Zhang Junhai gloated. “These three are underground fighters I brought in from out of province. Breaking your leg will be child’s play.”
Xu Zen chuckled. “I think… you’re about to capsize again.”
Ignoring Zhang Junhai, he turned his attention to the approaching trio.
To the bald man in the center, he said lightly, “You’ve killed before.”
The man’s eyes narrowed. “I’ve taken out plenty of drug dealers on the border.”
“Wu Gang, 34. Enlisted in 2003, joined a special forces unit in May 2005. Multiple overseas combat missions. Dishonorably discharged in 2008 for embezzlement.” Xu Zen recited Xiao Dao’s intel smoothly.
The bald man’s face darkened. “Who the hell are you? How do you know this?”
Xu Zen ignored him, shifting his gaze to the man on the left. “Zhuo Ku. The police are still looking for you. Surprised you’re living so comfortably…”
