Reborn in the 80s: My Whole Family Secretly Hears My Thoughts and Goes Wild with Success! - Chapter 169
He Bin opened his mouth, not knowing how to reply.
He really didn’t see Lu Shuangshuang as a sister, but he also didn’t know what she was to him. He hadn’t even figured out his own heart yet.
“Sweet as honey, your smile is so sweet, like a flower blooming in the spring breeze…” Lu Shuangshuang softly hummed “Sweet as Honey.”
As she sang, she swung her legs. He Bin could see her fluttering skirt and fair ankles just by lowering his gaze.
“How’s that scrape on your foot?” He Bin asked after she stopped singing.
“Was never a big deal, just a little flesh wound.”
Lu Shuangshuang’s eyes lit up, and she leaned her head towards He Bin. “Hey, kid, you’re worried about me?”
“Not at all, just asking casually.” He Bin turned his face away.
A smile flickered in Lu Shuangshuang’s eyes. “Oh, really?”
“Sit still now.” He Bin reached out and gave Lu Shuangshuang a gentle push. The moment his hand touched her shoulder, his heart gave an involuntary flutter.
He quickly pulled his hand back, gripping the bicycle handles tightly, putting on a deliberately fierce tone to threaten her. “If you keep swaying around, I’ll leave you right here.”
“Hah!” Lu Shuangshuang rolled her eyes. “You leave me here, and if something happens to me, see how you explain it to Zhiqiu.”
Hearing the words “something happens,” He Bin’s chest felt as if punched, a dull ache settling in. “Don’t talk nonsense. Nothing will happen.”
“Who can say for sure about these things?”
“Why is your mouth so annoying? Who jinxes themselves like that?”
“I’m not jinxing myself! I’m just stating facts. You know someone wants to harm me.” Lu Shuangshuang said on purpose, “Might not even be just one person.”
“Just how many people have you offended?”
“I didn’t offend them! They’re the ones with rotten hearts, okay?” Lu Shuangshuang suddenly patted He Bin’s back. “Stop! Stop right now!”
Confused, He Bin quickly braced with his foot. Lu Shuangshuang jumped off the bike, went to the roadside, plucked a wildflower, and hopped back in front of He Bin. “Well? Pretty?”
“Pretty. It’s just… you probably don’t know this flower isn’t very auspicious.”
“Not auspicious?”
He Bin took the flower from her hand. “This flower is also called the ‘funeral flower.’ They say it grew from spirit money scattered on the ground.”
Lu Shuangshuang was stunned for a moment, blinked, then bent over laughing. She stood on tiptoe, reached up, and vigorously ruffled He Bin’s hair. “Xiao Xiang, you’re so funny! Think about it, is what you said even possible?”
“Well, there’s another saying: where funeral flowers appear, a lonely spirit might appear too.”
He Bin leaned a bit closer to Lu Shuangshuang, tilted his chin towards a spot left and ahead of her, and deliberately lowered his voice. “Take a look over there.”
“I won’t look!”
Lu Shuangshuang cried out in fright, quickly covering her eyes.
He Bin pressed his lips together, desperately holding back laughter. He reached out, held her shoulders, and turned her around. “Just one glance.”
“No!”
With a sob in her voice, Lu Shuangshuang threw herself into He Bin’s arms. His hands flew open, and he was utterly at a loss.
The scent of green apple mixed with jasmine wafted over him.
He couldn’t help but swallow. He wanted to hold her, but a sliver of reason remained, telling him he couldn’t do that.
“Uh… let go of me!”
“I won’t.”
Not only did Lu Shuangshuang not let go, she held on even tighter, her whole body pressed against him. “There’s a ghost!”
Feeling Lu Shuangshuang trembling, He Bin knew he had really scared her and couldn’t help but feel guilty. “There isn’t. I lied to you.”
“Really?” Lu Shuangshuang lifted her head, eyes still tightly shut.
He Bin stared dumbly at her lips, his mind a blank. “Yeah, really.”
“If you’re lying, you’re a puppy.” Lu Shuangshuang still didn’t dare open her eyes.
He Bin softened his voice. “I swear, if I’m lying, I’m a puppy. There’s really nothing there.”
Lu Shuangshuang squinted, quickly glanced over her shoulder.
Seemed like nothing was there.
She opened her eyes a little wider, looked again, and confirmed there was truly nothing.
Turning back, she punched He Bin’s shoulder hard. “You brat! How dare you scare me!”
“How was I supposed to know you were so timid?”
Seeing their own reflections in each other’s eyes, Lu Shuangshuang and He Bin were both momentarily lost.
Belatedly realizing she was still holding He Bin, Lu Shuangshuang quickly let go, taking a big step back, flustered as she smoothed her hair.
“Want a soda?” He Bin changed the subject.
“Sure.”
“Wait here, I’ll go buy some.”
A supply and marketing cooperative was not far away. He Bin returned with two bottles of soda. He handed one to Lu Shuangshuang. “This one’s not cold; the sun warmed it up.”
“Mhm.” Lu Shuangshuang didn’t dare look at He Bin. She quickly reached out in his direction, wanting to just take the bottle.
Unexpectedly, her grab landed directly on He Bin’s wrist.
“Here.”
Sighing internally, He Bin stuffed the soda into Lu Shuangshuang’s hand.
Lu Shuangshuang turned her back, her face burning bright red.
He Bin was certainly no better off. He tilted his head back and gulped down the entire bottle of ice-cold soda in one go, yet he still felt terribly hot.
An awkward atmosphere lingered between them. Lu Shuangshuang bit her lip, her heart in turmoil.
When she finally came to her senses, she noticed He Bin had ridden onto an unfamiliar small path. Forgetting her shyness, she poked his back twice to remind him, “Xiao Xiang, we’re on the wrong road.”
“I know.”
Without explanation, He Bin pedaled a bit further and stopped beside a wall. “Keep an eye on the bike. I’ll be right back.”
“What are you doing?”
He Bin put a finger to his lips, signaling Lu Shuangshuang to be quiet. With a running start, he jumped, grabbed the top of the wall, and flipped over.
After about ten minutes, he flipped back. From behind his waist, he pulled out a large bunch of flowers and thrust them into Lu Shuangshuang’s arms.
Lu Shuangshuang’s eyes widened. “Wait, you went and stole someone’s flowers?”
“I was playing around here before and noticed there were lots of flowers inside. Tell me what you like, and next time I’ll go in early to pick some for you.”
“Don’t! What if you get caught?”
Lu Shuangshuang looked at the brightly blooming flowers in her arms and couldn’t help but smile. “Well, since it’s already done this time…”
“Then tell me what you like. I’ll plant some for you. We have a small patch of land in front of our house.”
After he said it, both He Bin and Lu Shuangshuang froze. He Bin hurriedly explained, “Don’t misunderstand, I mean…”
“I like jasmine. And sunflowers.”
“Sunflowers?” He Bin smiled. “I like sunflowers too. Sunflower seed cakes are really tasty.”
“Haha, I like sunflowers precisely because the seed cakes are delicious, especially the really big ones. They’re so satisfying to eat.”
He Bin deeply agreed. “Yeah, exactly.”
“My dad happened to plant a few sunflowers. They’re almost ripe. If they’re ready next time I pick you up, I’ll bring you the biggest one.”
“Promise? You can’t go back on your word.”
“Cross my heart, or I’m a puppy, okay? Why do you always think I’ll trick you?”
“You just tricked me a moment ago!” Mentioning this, Lu Shuangshuang was still annoyed. She hit He Bin hard. “And you scared me!”
