Reborn in the 80s: My Whole Family Secretly Hears My Thoughts and Goes Wild with Success! - Chapter 152
“Zhiqiu, look what I managed to get.”
Lu Shuangshuang ran up to Ye Zhiqiu and pulled two tickets from her pocket. “The drama troupe is performing The White-Haired Girl at our compound’s auditorium tonight. Want to go?”
“Alright.”
Ye Zhiqiu grabbed Yaya’s little hand and gave it a gentle shake. “Yaya, do you want to go?”
Yaya nodded to show she did.
“Aunt Ye, I’d like to go too, is that okay?” Huo Jiusi looked up at Ye Zhiqiu.
He didn’t really want to see the performance; he just didn’t want to be separated from Yaya.
“Of course you can.”
Lu Shuangshuang added, “Then we should go early to get good seats near the front.”
“Okay.”
On the way, they ran into Tian Man with Tan Nan and Tan Pei, so the group sat together.
Tan Pei had taken an immediate liking to Huo Jiusi and insisted on sitting next to him.
“Jiusi, my brother, some friends, and I are going to play in the air-raid shelter tomorrow afternoon. Do you want to come?” Tan Pei enthusiastically invited Huo Jiusi.
Huo Jiusi was just about to refuse when Yaya vigorously shook the little hand he was holding.
[I want to go! Little demon, let’s go, let’s go! Take me too!]
Huo Jiusi looked at Tan Pei. “Where are you meeting up? I’ll find you there.”
Tan Pei’s eyes lit up. “We agreed to meet at the entrance of the air-raid shelter. Jiusi, do you know where it is? Should I come find you and bring you there?”
Huo Jiusi genuinely didn’t know where the air-raid shelter was, so he nodded. “Okay.”
“It’s settled then!” Tan Pei held out her pinky finger. “Let’s pinky swear!”
The overhead lights suddenly went out, and Tan Nan gently tapped his sister’s head. “Be quiet.”
Yaya fell asleep halfway through the performance. Huo Jiusi spent the whole time fanning her with a palm-leaf fan beside her.
Tan Pei watched, feeling quite envious. She turned and tugged on Tan Nan’s hand. “Brother, look how good Jiusi is to Yaya. Fan me too, please?”
“You have hands, don’t you? Fan yourself.”
Even as he said this, Tan Nan’s actions betrayed him. However, after just a couple of fanning motions, he lost patience and shoved the fan into Tan Pei’s hand. “Now it’s your turn to fan me.”
“No way! Let’s just fan ourselves.”
Tan Pei took the fan, then turned and started fanning Huo Jiusi instead. “Jiusi, are you hot?”
“I’m not hot. You don’t need to fan me.”
Tan Pei was about to say something else when Huo Jiusi raised a finger to his lips. “Shh, don’t wake Yaya.”
“Then are you hungry? I brought some snacks. Here, have some.” Tan Pei pulled two small fruits from her pocket.
Huo Jiusi shook his head. Tan Pei couldn’t help feeling a little disappointed. She turned to the other side and offered them to Tan Nan. “Here, Brother, you have them.”
Tan Nan didn’t stand on ceremony. He took them and finished them in two bites, then held his hand out to Tan Pei again. “What else have you got?”
“Nothing!” Tan Pei smacked his open palm.
Tan Nan withdrew his hand and pulled a few packs of snacks from his own pocket. “Bought them at the school commissary.”
“Brother, you’re the best!”
Tan Pei gleefully took two packs, eagerly opened one, and then offered it to Huo Jiusi. “Jiusi, try this. It’s really delicious.”
Huo Jiusi waved his hand. “I don’t really like snacks, you have them.”
“You’re so strange. I’ve never met anyone who doesn’t like snacks.”
Huo Jiusi didn’t explain. It wasn’t that he disliked snacks; he just didn’t like accepting them from others. If Yaya gave him something, he’d love it no matter what it was, even if it was his most hated cilantro.
The performance lasted just over an hour. As they filed out with the crowd afterwards, Lu Shuangshuang suddenly pointed ahead.
“Zhiqiu, Sis, isn’t that Chen Can and that Xu Wan?”
Ye Zhiqiu and Tian Man looked closely. It was indeed Chen Can and Xu Wan.
Chen Can had his arm around Xu Wan’s waist, and the two were talking and laughing.
Once outside the auditorium, Lu Shuangshuang muttered, “Is Chen Can really going to divorce Shen Liya and marry Xu Wan?”
“It certainly looks that way.”
Tian Man shook her head. “Finding the next one before even finalizing the divorce… that kind of man isn’t reliable.”
Ye Zhiqiu added, “Everyone knows why he’s with Xu Wan.”
Lu Shuangshuang looked at Tian Man, then at Ye Zhiqiu. “Sis, Zhiqiu, you both know why?”
Ye Zhiqiu explained to Lu Shuangshuang: “Chen Can wants to get promoted another rank. Xu Wan’s father and eldest brother can help him with that.”
Lu Shuangshuang, blunt as ever, said, “Relying on his father-in-law and brother-in-law… that’s basically relying on his wife. He’s a pretty-boy living off a woman. Though, Chen Can’s face is indeed quite fair.”
Her remark made both Ye Zhiqiu and Tian Man laugh.
As they chatted, Tian Man reached her home first.
The further in they walked, the fewer people there were. Lu Shuangshuang, belatedly nervous, clung tightly to Ye Zhiqiu’s arm. “Zhiqiu, don’t you feel like something is following us?”
“Don’t be afraid. They’re just stray cats and dogs. They won’t hurt us.” After experiencing it several times, Ye Zhiqiu had gotten used to these little creatures by now.
Moreover, as if they knew she was afraid, the cats usually stayed in front, while the dogs kept their distance from her.
Her fear of dogs was simple – that incident from childhood had truly terrified her – but she knew dogs were good creatures and didn’t dislike them.
“Why have there been so many stray cats and dogs in the compound lately? I’ve seen them several times near your place.” Once Lu Shuangshuang learned it was just strays, she wasn’t scared anymore and let go of Ye Zhiqiu.
“The weather is warm this time of year, so they like to come out and run around. When it gets cold in winter, you probably won’t see as many.”
Lu Shuangshuang said, “Many freeze to death in the winter cold. It’s really sad.”
Ye Zhiqiu changed the subject. “You’re going back to the song and dance troupe tomorrow, right?”
“Yes, my injuries are mostly better. It’s time to go back.”
“Before, I was always happy to leave, but this time I’m so reluctant to part with my aunt.”
Lu Shuangshuang took Ye Zhiqiu’s hand. “Zhiqiu, from now on, my aunt is my only family. While I’m away, could you please go check on her for me? If she feels unwell anywhere, you must let me know.”
“Don’t worry.”
After Lu Shuangshuang’s injuries improved somewhat, Feng Wan went to see Lu Guangrong. Afterwards, she moved all of Lu Shuangshuang’s belongings to her own place. From then on, Lu Shuangshuang was effectively cut off from the Lu family.
Lu Guangrong had been furious in the heat of the moment and later felt some regret. But with so many people having witnessed it, his words were like water spilled on the ground – impossible to take back. He hoped Lu Shuangshuang would come home to apologize, giving him a way to save face.
Unexpectedly, that was exactly what Lu Shuangshuang wanted as well.
She had considered that Lu Guangrong might find out it was her, and that he might hit her. But she never imagined he would want to beat her to death and say so many cruel things.
In that moment, she finally saw her true place in his heart.
Originally, she had only hoped Lu Guangrong would let her leave the Lu family. But since he was unwilling to acknowledge her as his daughter anymore, that was even better.
From now on, she had nothing to do with the Lu family, and Sun Lanzhi and Lu Xu could forget about scheming against her anymore.
