Reborn in the 80s: My Whole Family Secretly Hears My Thoughts and Goes Wild with Success! - Chapter 149
The Back Hills.
Ling Hang walked in front, with Ye Jiawen following behind.
Whenever he saw a pretty wildflower, Ling Hang would step forward to pick it, then turn and hand it to Ye Jiawen.
By the time they reached the small stream, Ye Jiawen already held a large bunch of wildflowers in her hand.
“Shall we sit here for a while?” Noticing two large stones by the stream, Ling Hang asked Ye Jiawen.
Ye Jiawen nodded: “Sure.”
Ling Hang spread his handkerchief on one stone, helped Ye Jiawen sit down comfortably, and then sat on the other stone himself.
“Jiawen, is your injury completely healed now?”
“It’s been fine for a while,” Ye Jiawen said, tucking the wind-tousled hair behind her ear. “I still need to thank you for saving me.”
“It was just a coincidence.”
Ling Hang reached out his hand to Ye Jiawen: “Let me weave you a flower crown.”
“You know how to weave flower crowns?” Ye Jiawen was very surprised, handing all the wildflowers in her hand to Ling Hang.
Ling Hang’s hands were very deft, and he finished weaving a crown in no time. He hopped down from his stone, held up the crown, and placed it on Ye Jiawen’s head.
Ye Jiawen lifted her face, her smile radiant: “Well? How does it look? Is it pretty?”
Ling Hang nodded emphatically: “Very pretty.”
Ye Jiawen couldn’t help but blush, and Ling Hang grinned, looking rather foolish.
“Jiawen… would you be willing to be in a relationship with me?”
Ling Hang crouched down, bringing his eyes level with hers: “Ever since that time I saw you, I keep thinking about you. I’m sure I like you.”
“You… what are your feelings towards me? You were willing to come see me, does that mean you have a fairly good impression of me?”
Ye Jiawen frowned slightly: “It is fairly good, but we’ve only met twice. Wouldn’t deciding to be in a relationship be too rushed?”
“Do you like me?” Ling Hang clenched his hands resting on his knees.
Ye Jiawen told the truth: “I don’t really know what counts as liking someone. Does thinking about you often count?”
“Of course it counts!”
“Jiawen, you like me, and I like you. So, can we get to know each other with the intention of being in a relationship? Whenever you feel ready to agree, that’s when we’ll officially be together.”
“Alright.”
This was also what Ye Jiawen had in mind. She pointed to the large stone beside them: “Why don’t you sit back down? Crouching like that must be tiring.”
“Not tired.” He wanted to be close to her.
“You might not be tired, but it makes me uncomfortable.” Him being so close made her heart beat too fast.
Ling Hang sat back down, facing Ye Jiawen: “Is your studies workload heavy?”
“Not really.”
Once she started talking about her studies, Ye Jiawen became talkative, and Ling Hang just listened. In his eyes, Ye Jiawen seemed to shine brightly at that moment.
“How about you? Tell me about yourself, okay? It can’t just be you learning about me without me learning about you,” Ye Jiawen said frankly. “Since we plan to be together in the future, I want to understand you too.”
“There are some things I cannot talk about. I’ll tell you what I can.”
Like Ye Jiawen, Ling Hang talked about his daily life: “Our life is quite monotonous. It’s just training every day, with occasional competitions and drills.”
“Jiawen, you should know that a soldier’s duty is to protect the homeland and defend the nation. We face dangers; we might get injured, or even… sacrifice.”
Ling Hang said with concern, “If I…”
“Don’t say it!” Ye Jiawen interrupted him sharply. “Don’t say such unlucky words. Quick, say ‘pei pei’ twice to ward it off.”
“You believe in that sort of thing,” Ling Hang chuckled lightly, but he obediently said “pei pei” twice.
“Jiawen, these are things you need to consider, because they really could happen.”
Ling Hang spoke plainly: “I’ve seen the families of martyrs cry their hearts out. I’ve also seen engagements called off because of injuries. And not just once.”
“I’m not afraid of getting injured, nor am I afraid of sacrifice. But I am afraid of being a burden to you, of making you sad.”
Even though he often seemed cheerful, he was particularly pessimistic in this aspect.
“If that day ever really comes, we can talk about it then. Since it hasn’t happened, let’s not think about it now.”
Ye Jiawen smiled at Ling Hang: “Ling Hang, thank you for being so clear and honest with me. I can tell you my decision right now. I am willing to be in a relationship with you, the kind that aims for marriage.”
“If that day ever comes, and you are injured and disabled, I wouldn’t see you as a burden. I would be proud. You were defending our country. You would be a hero.”
“If that day ever comes, and you… sacrifice yourself, I would indeed be very sad. I don’t know how deep my feelings for you would be by then, or what the situation would be like – whether I would follow you, or live on, carrying your share along with mine.”
“What the future holds, none of us can know. But we can’t give up the present because of things that haven’t happened yet.”
“The present determines the future. Let me ask you, would you refuse to be with me out of fear?”
Ling Hang’s gaze was exceptionally firm: “No. It’s precisely because I want to be with you that I’m afraid.”
“If you don’t want to be a burden to me, if you don’t want me to be sad, then try your best not to put yourself in danger. But if it’s unavoidable, how could I possibly blame you?”
“Ling Hang, we both have our own responsibilities to bear. We don’t only have each other.”
“Perhaps one day, I might also face various dangers.”
Ye Jiawen had chosen to specialize in defense law focusing on criminal law. This meant that in the future, she would face many criminals.
Her mentor had advised her to focus on civil law or commercial and economic law, but she was determined; she wanted to specialize in criminal law.
Since she was a child, she had a hero’s dream – to sweep away all the evil in this world. She knew it was impossible, but if it’s the right thing to do, someone has to do it.
Just like Yue Mingyuan, Ling Hang, and the others – they know they could get injured or sacrifice themselves, but to protect the country and its people, they still march forward resolutely.
“Jiawen, I’ve found it.”
Ling Hang excitedly grasped Ye Jiawen’s hand. For a moment, Ye Jiawen didn’t understand: “Found what?”
“The love of my life.”
“That’s so corny.” Ye Jiawen shook off Ling Hang’s hand and glared at him. “We were having a serious conversation, and now you’re being slick-tongued?”
“I’m speaking from my heart, I’m not teasing you.”
Ling Hang grabbed Ye Jiawen’s hand and placed it over his own chest. “Jiawen, you are the girl I’ve always been looking for.”
“Distance tests a horse’s stamina, time reveals a person’s heart.”
Ye Jiawen patted Ling Hang’s chest. “Whether we are truly the right person for each other… we’ll only know when we’re on our deathbeds.”
“Ling Hang, although it might be a bit early to say this… for the rest of our lives, please take good care of me.”
Ling Hang responded earnestly: “Likewise, absolutely.”
People are truly remarkable. Some people know each other for a long time yet never truly understand one another.
While others, after just a few meetings, can connect straight to the depths of the soul.
“You two are…?”
Seeing them return hand in hand, Ye Zhiqiu’s gaze shifted back and forth between Ling Hang and Ye Jiawen.
“We’re together now.” Ye Jiawen raised their clasped hands and announced with a smile.
Ye Zhiqiu and Yue Mingyuan exchanged a look, then each pulled Ye Jiawen and Ling Hang aside separately.
Ye Zhiqiu said quietly to Ye Jiawen, “Cousin, isn’t this progress a bit too fast?”
