Reborn in the 80s: My Whole Family Secretly Hears My Thoughts and Goes Wild with Success! - Chapter 14
Her parents met when they were both educated youth sent to the countryside.
Her mother had initially secured a permit to return to the city but gave it up for her father. Soon after, the national college entrance exams were reinstated.
A year after her mother tested back into Guojing University, she married her father. Another year later, they had her.
When her mother went into labor, her father was away on business. According to accounts, her mother fell at home and nearly had a miscarriage. Fortunately, their neighbor, Granny Xu, noticed in time and rushed her mother to the hospital, saving both their lives.
However, the incident left her mother with chronic health issues and rendered her infertile.
Her paternal grandmother’s family was deeply patriarchal. They constantly berated her mother for only bearing a daughter and treated her with contempt.
Over time, her parents’ relationship deteriorated. She was too young to remember the specifics, only that her father was rarely home.
Whenever she asked her mother about it, her mother would sigh and say he was away on business.
When she was seven, her mother, drained and exhausted, clutched her hand with bitter reluctance before closing her eyes forever.
Before even a hundred days had passed since her mother’s death, her father brought Wang Fengqin into the household. The neighbors gossiped endlessly, and her second uncle cut ties with her father over it.
Not long after, they moved away.
It seemed she’d have to revisit the old alley someday and ask the former neighbors about what really happened back then.
…
“Zhiqiu, your dad knows you’ve married into a good family, but remember—even if you become an empress, you’re still my daughter, Shen Daqiang’s daughter! You will obey me!”
Drunk and emboldened, Shen Daqiang jabbed a thumb at his chest. “A daughter obeying her father is the natural order of things!”
“Zhiqiu, stop fighting your father on everything,” Wang Fengqin chimed in, seizing the chance to drive a wedge between them. “Everything he does is for your good, for this family’s good.”
“Dad, a father caring for his daughter is natural. But I’ve never seen one who favors an outsider over his own flesh and blood.”
Shen Zhiqiu’s gaze flicked between Shen Daqiang and Shen Liya. “Anyone would think Liya was your real daughter.”
She tilted her head. “Actually, now that I look—Dad, don’t you and Liya resemble each other?”
She turned to Li Shuying. “Auntie, don’t you think? Doesn’t Liya look just like my dad?”
Her finger traced a line between Shen Liya, Wang Fengqin, and Shen Daqiang. “Honestly, the three of them look like one happy family.”
Shen Daqiang’s face darkened. “Enough of your nonsense!” His voice boomed, as if to drown out something unspoken.
Ye Yunlin, a man of few words but swift action, strode forward, grabbed Shen Daqiang by the collar, and hauled him up. “Shen Daqiang,” he growled, “did you ever betray my Xiaoshuang?”
“Brother, you’re listening to Zhiqiu’s delusions? She’s mentally unstable!”
Shen Daqiang clawed at Ye Yunlin’s grip, but his drink-softened arms were no match for a construction worker’s strength.
“Cut the crap! Answer me—did you wrong my sister?”
Ye Yunlin’s free hand curled into a fist.
Shen Daqiang spat back, “Ye Yunlin, who the hell do you think you are? Ye Yunshuang’s been dead for years! You’ve got no right to play the protective big brother!”
“You disowned me as your brother-in-law! This isn’t your family, so stay out of it!”
“You hurt my sister—that makes it my business.” Ye Yunlin’s eyes blazed, veins bulging in his neck. “You swore to me you’d never betray her! Yet she was gone within years of marrying you! What did you do to her?”
“She was sickly! If anything, I should blame her for nearly leaving me without an heir!”
Ye Yunlin’s fist crashed into Shen Daqiang’s face before he could spew more filth.
Shen Daqiang crumpled onto the sofa, spitting blood—and two teeth.
“You dare hit me?!” His glare burned with hatred. If not for Ye Yunlin’s strength, he’d have lunged with a knife, stabbing until his brother-in-law was a bloody sieve.
But Shen Daqiang was a coward. His son, Shen Xiang, was not.
Raised spoiled and lawless, Shen Xiang had bullied classmates and neighbors unchecked, convinced the world bent to his will. He snatched a fruit knife from the table and charged.
“You bastard! Touch my dad again and die!”
Ye Jiawu threw himself in Shen Xiang’s path. The blade flashed—
Yue Mingyuan, holding Yaya, kicked Shen Xiang square in the ribs, sending him flying. The knife clattered to the floor.
Yue Mingyuan picked it up, cold eyes pinning Shen Xiang, who sneered, “Cheap shot, brother-in-law. Fight me fair—”
The knife halted a hair’s breadth from Shen Xiang’s eye.
Sweat drenched him. For the first time, he knew fear.
“If you ever threaten your sister again,” Yue Mingyuan said softly, “I’ll teach you a lasting lesson.”
He sheathed the knife, then patted Yaya’s back, voice warm again. “Don’t be scared, sweetheart.”
[Phew—close call! Thank goodness Little Uncle’s okay!
Dad did great! Mom’s definitely impressed.]
Yaya secretly cheered. Two missions accomplished at once—so satisfying! (ᗒᗨᗕ)
In her past life, Second Uncle had clashed with that old bastard too. When Shen Xiang ambushed him, Little Uncle took the blow—and nearly died.
Second Uncle crippled Shen Xiang in retaliation, but as a minor, Shen Xiang walked free. Second Uncle lost his job, and their family struggled in poverty.
Mom blamed herself endlessly. The witch and the old bastard blamed her.
And since Shen Xiang was the witch’s golden child, she tormented Mom for years.
Grandpa’s household drowned in gloom. The witch seized the moment, declaring Mom an ill-omen star—first killing Grandma, now cursing Second Uncle, Grandpa, and Auntie.
And Yaya, born of an ill-omen, was cursed too. A scourge destined to bring misery to all near her.
