As An Antique Shop Owner, It's Only Reasonable That I Know A Bit Of Magic - Chapter 71
By now, even if Scarlett was slow, she could guess what was happening.
A chain-reaction car crash!
After directly destroying an entire bridge, the Death God had once again interfered with reality on a large scale!
Thanks to the effect of the talismans, Scarlett, having survived three deadly calamities, now had only minor scratches!
But the talismans were limited!
In this ongoing chain collision, the Death God had countless opportunities to kill them both!
They had to escape immediately!
Scarlett looked up and saw a car already pressed on top of theirs.
If they had been in a sports car instead of this van, they would probably already be…
No time to think about that!
Scarlett decisively abandoned the van that could no longer start, reaching out repeatedly to pull the interior door handle.
However, the side door had already been severely deformed by the powerful impact and wouldn’t open.
Left with no other choice, Scarlett could only try to climb out through the shattered window.
But just as she stuck her head out the window, drops of engine oil fell onto the back of her hand.
Her hand slipped, her upper body lost support leaning out the window, and the jagged broken window suddenly began to rise on its own!
Scarlett struggled in panic, but it was useless. She could only feel sharp objects pressing into and piercing her abdomen.
Just as she was about to be cut in half by the broken glass, the talisman on her chest heated up again!
The damaged connection of the door seemed unable to bear Scarlett’s weight and broke. She fell forward onto the ground, finally avoiding death.
But Scarlett felt no relief.
The fourth one!
In less than five minutes, four talismans had been consumed!
The only thought in her mind now was to get away from here as fast as possible.
But for some reason, her eyes were drawn uncontrollably to the passenger seat.
Su Fan was still asleep, but his previously peaceful expression was gone.
Perhaps the impact from the crash had injured him badly.
Blood was faintly seen flowing out of the latter’s mouth and nose.
Scarlett immediately got up, pulling Su Fan out from the passenger seat.
She then took several talismans from her bosom and placed them on Su Fan’s chest.
Finally, with great effort, she hoisted his body over her shoulder.
“Su… We won’t die.”
Scarlett muttered to herself, trudging forward with difficulty.
She exercised regularly, but the height difference between them was significant.
Simply carrying Su Fan and walking normally was already a challenge for her.
Through the flames and thick smoke, Scarlett carried Su Fan towards the empty sides of the road.
The more open the area, the fewer things the Death God could manipulate, and the safer they would be.
“Boom!”
The van behind them burst into raging flames. The fire spread rapidly along the gasoline spilled on the ground, somehow blocking their path forward!
Scarlett turned, wanting to escape in another direction, but the flames seemed to mock her futile efforts, quickly sealing off the other way too.
Looking around, everything was starting to blaze fiercely.
But the ring of fire wasn’t completely closed; a path, just wide enough for a person to pass through, remained in the middle.
Was the ‘Death God’ doing this on purpose…?
Scarlett understood its meaning.
That ‘Death God,’ which had never appeared from start to finish, wanted to see them struggle pathetically for survival.
Scarlett, carrying Su Fan, walked step by step through the ring of fire…
A vehicle behind them suddenly exploded, the scorching blast wave nearly knocking over her already unsteady body.
Shards of car parts, flung up by the blast, shot towards them but missed.
The fifth and sixth talismans shattered.
In the distance, the blare of a large truck’s horn sounded, growing from far away to piercingly close.
After the screech of tires braking urgently and skidding across the road, came the sound of a collision and rolling.
But Scarlett acted as if she hadn’t heard, continuing to move outward.
The large truck slammed into and scattered the piled-up wreckage. A rolling car flew past overhead, and to their left and right.
The seventh, eighth, ninth… twelfth talismans… shattered…
The crash ultimately affected the street lamps on both sides of the road. A lamp post fell towards where they stood, yet once again brushed past them.
Thirteen, fourteen…
Exposed broken wires danced on the ground like slender black snakes.
Scarlett endured the numbing sensation, stepping forward out of the electric field.
Fifteen, sixteen…
At this point, all the talismans Su Fan had given her were shattered!
The night street was oddly deserted.
A strange sound came from above.
Scarlett’s mind was already somewhat hazy. She looked up and saw a burning passenger plane falling.
There was no running away now…
Scarlett stopped walking and didn’t go any further.
She set Su Fan down, sat beside him, and closed her eyes.
The firelight grew brighter and brighter, until finally, it swallowed their figures…
After their deaths, a song drifted from a wrecked car not far away in the crash.
“He was born in the summer of his twenty-seventh year
Coming home to a place he’d never been before
He left yesterday behind him, you might say he was born again…”
The John Denver song was soon drowned out by subsequent explosions, like the fleeting, cold laugh of the Death God.
At the same time, in an airport not far from there, a group of men and women were feeling grateful that their friend had dragged them off that plane…
…
Within the dazzling glare from the burning plane wreckage, a hazy, gaseous black existence slowly rose.
It swayed in the air, as if searching for its next prey.
But in the very next second, the hazy existence suddenly began to shake violently.
It tried to leave the area but found it couldn’t.
The abnormal situation made it restless. It thrashed about incessantly, like a beast trapped in a cage.
“Took a lot of effort to catch you.”
A voice came from within the flames.
At that moment, the swaying black mist seemed to freeze for an instant.
“I thought for a long time about what method to use against a non-corporeal, conceptual being like you.”
“But I never found a clear answer.”
“Because I didn’t know where you were or how you were tracking my movements.”
“If there was any evil aura, I should have detected it long ago.”
“But then I figured it out. You’re worshipped as a deity. Even if there is evil aura, it can be masked by the faith of your believers, just like gilding a clay idol.”
A figure walked out of the flames. Who else could it be but Su Fan?
The surrounding fires seemed completely incapable of harming him; not even the hem of his clothes showed any signs of burning.
His face was somewhat pale, not looking entirely healthy, but it bore a brilliant smile.
