As An Antique Shop Owner, It's Only Reasonable That I Know A Bit Of Magic - Chapter 66
Hearing Su Fan’s words, Scarlett began to feel there was some logic to it.
Wasn’t it the same for high-risk stunt doubles in films and TV shows?
There were safety measures, but they could still get injured or even die during a stunt.
Su Fan’s analogy actually worked; Scarlett felt a bit more settled inside, less panicky than before.
Su Fan himself stretched slightly.
An enemy with no health bar, only a progress bar, could only be worn down slowly.
However, he didn’t plan to just do nothing while being hunted.
He intended to investigate some clues.
Thinking this, he took out his phone and dialed a number from memory.
“Hello, who is this?”
“It’s me, Detective.”
“You, Su? Is this your number? When did you get a phone?”
The detective’s curious voice came through the receiver.
“Never mind that for now. I’m calling on official business.”
Su Fan curbed the detective’s budding curiosity.
“Can you check for me if there’s a Black mortician working for the LAPD’s coroner’s office? Probably not too old, around six feet tall.”
“A Black mortician? No problem. I’ll check right now. Hold on, don’t hang up.”
After agreeing, the detective immediately had the records officer check on the computer.
Soon, news came back.
“There are very few Black morticians. Only one fits your description.”
“Where is he now?”
“At this hour, he should be handling a case from an accidental death this morning at the Beverly Center shopping mall.”
“Can you find out how the victim died?”
Su Fan pressed further.
“Can do.”
At this point, the detective’s tone took on a strange note.
“Wait a second…”
“Crushed by a suddenly falling ceiling? That’s unbelievable…”
Hearing this answer, Su Fan was certain the person the detective mentioned was the one he was looking for.
“Thanks for your help, Detective. I’ve got things to do here, I’ll hang up now.”
After ending the call, Su Fan spoke directly to Scarlett beside him.
“To the Beverly Center.”
Scarlett didn’t say much, simply started the engine.
As the sports car moved, they soon entered the city streets. The streetlights flickered across Su Fan’s face with the motion of the car.
If anyone knew Death and its characteristics best, it had to be that mysterious Black mortician.
He had appeared when the female lead in the first movie went to view her friend’s body, revealing crucial information.
He appeared multiple times in subsequent sequels as well.
Su Fan was convinced he must know even more.
————
About two kilometers away from Su Fan and Scarlett, a young Black man leaned against a lamppost, his eyes constantly roving over the attractive women passing on the sidewalk.
He had lifted a wallet from a sucker today, and it had a decent amount of cash.
After satisfying his hunger, it was natural to think about satisfying another major desire.
His undisguised stares drew disgust from many, but there was also a certain group of women who didn’t mind at all, even subtly meeting his gaze.
His standards seemed quite picky; he looked for a long time.
Just as the cigarette in his hand was about to burn out, his eyes finally lit up.
The two understood each other’s intentions through looks alone. The Black man smirked lewdly, took a deep drag from his cigarette, stubbed it out on the lamppost, and flicked it away.
————
At that moment, a cold gust of wind blew against the back of Su Fan’s head.
Not only that, a patch of black mist suddenly materialized in front of Su Fan before dissipating.
The streetlights they drove past also began to flicker.
The car stereo turned on by itself again, emitting a series of zzt zzt sounds before the eerie song from before started playing once more.
“Su!”
With her previous experience, Scarlett knew exactly what this meant and immediately alerted Su Fan.
“I know. Just focus on driving. With the talisman, don’t be afraid.”
Alarm bells were ringing loudly in Su Fan’s mind.
His earlier suspicion was indeed correct.
Death was truly monitoring his actions.
He had merely made one phone call to the detective, and now he was being attacked again on the road.
But then, a faint smile touched Su Fan’s lips.
He was right. That Black mortician definitely knew some key clues.
The more Death tried to stop him, the more it proved his investigation was on the right track!
Trying to intercept me midway? Not so easy!
Su Fan took a deep breath, heightening his perception to the maximum.
Flickering images appeared before his eyes.
Flames, fire, a slouching Black youth, the road surface, a manhole cover, construction workers on a scaffold…
This was the foresight granted by his Premonition ability!
When the images of flames, the road surface, the manhole cover, and the scaffold appeared, Su Fan felt a distinct sense of foreboding!
It’s coming!
————
In the air, the cigarette butt, which should have been extinguished, found enough oxygen and actually glowed with faint embers again.
The butt rolled away, falling into a foul-smelling sewer drain nearby, sparking slightly.
The accumulated flammable gases inside contacted the embers, causing a flash fire!
BOOM!!
With a muffled thunderous sound, the rapidly increasing pressure inside the manhole blew the heavy cover sky-high. The explosive force was so powerful it even cracked the asphalt of the road surface!
The manhole cover was thrown high into the air, then plummeted down.
Not far below its trajectory, Scarlett was startled by the noise, but still followed Su Fan’s instruction, focusing solely on driving, seemingly unaware that a heavy iron disc was about to crash down!
In the passenger seat, Su Fan timed it perfectly, raising his hand towards an empty metal barrel nearby.
Summon!
The barrel, with no one touching it, flew directly towards Su Fan, colliding perfectly with the manhole cover in mid-air!
CLANG!
The sound of metal hitting metal echoed through the air, completely altering the cover’s falling trajectory!
In that brief moment, Scarlett drove through, leaving only the two metal objects clattering and rolling on the ground behind them.
With the manhole cover gone, the gaping hole was still ahead. Scarlett, distracted by the noise of the collision, blinked and missed the hazard in the road. Fortunately, Su Fan reached over and tugged the steering wheel, averting a potential crash.
But it wasn’t over yet!
A worker on a scaffold slightly ahead and to the side had his vision blurred by dust blown into his eyes by a sudden gust of wind. Shifting his position, he accidentally kicked over a bucket of paint beside his foot.
