After the Fall of the Demon Race, Reincarnated as a Demon Girl - Chapter 14
At the beginning of this operation, Schubert had actually been opposed to the plan.
He believed that relying solely on Renith to confront dozens of well-trained guards and six otherworlders of unknown strength was an incredibly daunting—if not outright impossible—task. The arrangement seemed utterly unrealistic.
But Roean supported Renith’s plan.
He had glimpsed an indescribable confidence in her eyes, a conviction so piercing it felt as though it could shatter any obstacle. He trusted that Renith’s strategy was sound.
Even Lance, typically cautious and level-headed, had surprisingly sided with Renith this time, endorsing a plan that most would deem unreasonable.
With his vast knowledge, Lance explained the reasoning to Schubert in detail.
A century ago, the Mage Tower would have undoubtedly stepped forward to uphold justice and righteousness. But times had changed. The number of otherworlders had grown, technology had advanced at an unprecedented pace, and the ancient arts of magic could no longer keep up with the era.
Mages despised technology—there seemed to be an inherent barrier between them. Now, most mages chose seclusion, content with their small domains, either immersing themselves in arcane research or enjoying a peaceful existence far from worldly conflicts. Injustice and strife outside their walls were often met with deliberate ignorance.
Renith’s appearance was indeed an opportunity—but only that. Schubert couldn’t expect her to rally the Mage Tower and drive out the nobility under the otherworlders’ control. If the mages were to involve themselves in this “struggle,” the tensions between them and the otherworlders would only escalate, becoming irreconcilable.
In the end, Schubert agreed to the operation.
Brutally thrown outside the door, Schubert slowly pulled up his pant leg. The magical particles concealing his bloodied, fractured bone dissipated, revealing the rough, sturdy skin of his calf.
The effect of 「Light Refraction」 had worn off.
Using the transcribed scroll of 「Pseudo-Divine Art: Light Refraction」 gifted by Renith, Schubert had cleverly disguised himself as an innocent victim of the explosion.
Every detail had been meticulously planned by Schubert and the other three.
Renith’s strategy was simple: send the three of them to divert the attention of Elberd and his otherworlder subordinates inside the mansion while she picked off the otherworlders one by one outside.
Lance made slight adjustments to Renith’s plan, suggesting they take full advantage of Schubert’s status as a servant.
Roean was dispatched to the eastern livestock farm to create chaos using the replicated 「Inferno Blast」 scroll, luring Elberd into sending guards and otherworlders there. Meanwhile, Schubert would remain inside the mansion, using another Inferno Blast scroll to draw Elberd’s attention.
With no otherworlders or guards left to protect him, Schubert would seize the moment and plunge a dagger into Elberd’s heart.
Though Schubert and Roean had executed their tasks flawlessly and coordinated well, they hadn’t anticipated Elberd’s sluggish reaction.
His response was painfully slow. By the time Roean’s chaos had sent the livestock stampeding and nearly emptied the eastern farm, Elberd had only just woken from his slumber and begun mobilizing the guards.
As a result, Schubert adjusted the plan on the fly, tearing up one of the 「Inferno Blast」 scrolls to draw everyone together—now was the perfect chance to eliminate them all at once.
Now, he just needed to reach the last scroll and tear it open to finish them off.
Silently slipping into the mansion through the back door, Schubert hurried down the dimly lit corridor, soon arriving near the room where the explosion had occurred earlier.
Hiding behind a half-open door, he cautiously peeked out to survey the situation.
Elberd was berating the incompetence of his guards, while one of the otherworlders crouched nearby, searching for clues. The remaining guards were either scouting or standing watch.
A few guards were missing, but if he could take out everyone in this room, it would all be over!
Just as Schubert was about to tear open the 「Inferno Blast」 scroll in his arms, a powerful hand suddenly clamped around his wrist with bone-crushing force.
A cold voice whispered in his ear:
“What are you doing, little rat?”
Nosax’s figure emerged like a ghost from within Schubert’s body, his eyes gleaming with cunning, a mocking smile playing on his lips.
He had long sensed something amiss with Schubert and had secretly hidden inside him. What Schubert had seen earlier was merely a 「shell」 Nosax had left behind deliberately.
Fear instantly flooded Schubert’s eyes. His gaze involuntarily flickered back, meeting Nosax’s cold, amused face pressed close to his own—like a demon crawling out of hell, mocking his weakness and helplessness.
“A magic scroll? How would a mere servant get his hands on this? Someone’s helping you… a proud mage? Hah, as if.”
Pain exploded in Schubert’s wrist as if a thousand needles were stabbing into it. He could hear the bones creaking under Nosax’s grip, on the verge of shattering.
His wrist was about to break…
Schubert could feel his wrist being mercilessly crushed and twisted, as though it would snap at any moment.
He had known the 「Chosen Ones」 were powerful—but not this powerful.
Just as despair began to set in, a thought flashed through Schubert’s mind—if his hands were bound, perhaps he could tear the scroll another way.
Gritting his teeth against the pain, he tried to bend down.
But Nosax had already anticipated his move.
Before Schubert could complete the motion, Nosax drove his knee hard into Schubert’s waist. The impact sent Schubert lurching forward, but with his hands still locked in Nosax’s grip, his body was forced into an unnatural backward arch, suspended in a grotesque balance.
“Oh, my dear Nosax, what’s going on here?”
Hearing the commotion, Elberd rubbed his beer belly and strode out of the room with his guards in tow. The moment he stepped out, his eyes landed on Schubert pinned to the floor and Nosax restraining him.
“This one’s responsible—though he couldn’t have done it alone.”
Nosax pried open Schubert’s fingers and snatched the 「Inferno Blast」 scroll from his grasp. After examining it briefly, he spoke:
“I’ll go find that mage. Hope they’ve got more surprises for me.”
As technology advanced, mages had declined. Those arrogant spellcasters holed up in their towers all day. Because of this, the value of existing magic scrolls had only risen—especially the ancient, intricate ones, now priceless rarities.
This scroll was exquisitely crafted, though the spell inscribed on it was relatively low-level. From this, Nosax deduced that the mage who made it might not be particularly powerful but was undoubtedly a master of scroll engraving.
And that meant the mage wasn’t just a mage—they were a walking treasury.
A treasury that would be easy to control.
Once Elberd and the guards had Schubert secured, Nosax merged back with his own body, stretched, and strode out of the mansion toward the village.
Elberd’s eyes burned with malice as he ordered the guards to surround Schubert, ensuring he couldn’t escape or resist.
Then, Elberd stepped closer, his broad foot stomping repeatedly on Schubert’s back.
Gritting his teeth, Schubert glared up at Elberd with pure hatred.
“You dare betray me… Truly, everyone in this village deserves to die. Schubert… I treated you well, didn’t I? What did I do to make you bold enough to turn against me?”
Seeing that Schubert was completely subdued, Elberd waved for a guard to hand him a gun to finish the job. But the guards stood frozen, as if deaf to his command.
Elberd had already had enough of their incompetence today. Furious, he whipped his head toward the dazed guard—his eyes vacant, ignoring Elberd completely.
Another guard nudged the man’s shoulder, jolting him awake.
“What’s wrong with you?”
The guard pointed at Elberd. The dazed man turned and met the baron’s furious gaze.
“M-My lord…”
Elberd had no more patience for these useless fools. With a roar, he slapped the guard hard across the face.
“I said, give me a gun! Now!”
Once he dealt with Schubert, he’d fire every last one of them!
The sharp slap snapped the guard back to reality. Fear flashed across his face as he hastily bowed, stammering apologies, and unstrapped a musket from his side, presenting it to Elberd with both hands.
Elberd snatched the gun, coldly scanning the surrounding guards before pressing the barrel against Schubert’s head, finger resting on the trigger.
“It’s over, Schubert.”
Just as Elberd’s finger began to squeeze, the sound of tearing paper came from a shadowed corner.
A servant—head bowed—burst out from the darkness.
The guards raised their muskets, but it was too late.
A clear liquid seeped from the scroll, snaking into their gun barrels before solidifying into watery shackles, locking Elberd and his guards in place.
“Schubert!”
Hearing his friend’s voice, Schubert forced a grin. Summoning his last strength, he pushed himself up, drew the dagger hidden in his belt, and drove it toward Elberd’s heart.
“Elberd… today, you will die. “
